Need a Speed Sensor?

mardi 16 décembre 2014

I'm wrapping up swapping the 4.0 from my 92 Cherokee with manual trans to my 89 jeep wrangler which had a 2.5 with a manual trans. All is going well and I fired her up for the first time last night. At which point I discovered a bad fuel leak and found out the water pump is leaking like sieve.....Oh well, at least I wired it right. but I digress.

On the 92 Cherokee, the speed sensor only had an electronic output so I had to change to a speed sensor that had both mechanical and signal outputs to allow the stock 89 wrangler speedo to be used. What does the ECM use the speed input for besides the speedometer signal (which I wont need need sense I've got a cable)? All timing should be handled by the PC using the crank trigger, the manual trans needs no PC input and there is no ABS so why does the ECM need the input? Also, what happens when it doesn't get the speed input?
