Rear Wiper won't shut off

vendredi 31 octobre 2014

I just picked up my new to me wk. I cant for the life of me figure out how to turn off the rear wiper. I have tried every position on that switch arm and it just keeps going randomly. It's only the rear wiper that's moving, it's like it's possessed.

I tried searching the web and this forum, but I cant find anything.

Anyone know what this is? Relay?

Thanks

Where can I find transmission lines?

I am looking for both lines coming from the transmission to the radiator and the other two that connect to them with the stock quick disconnects.

I found two of the them at advance auto, but cannot find the other ones.

If I cannot find them I am thinking of just cutting them near the tranny and adapting with flares or hose clamps to straight tubing up to around the pulley then switch to hose and hose clamps.

Just installed ride height sensor adjusters on my Overland

After going with some 275/55/20 Nitto Terra Grapplers, my front left tire would graze the front trim piece every once in a while. My wheels have a +18 offset

I got some adjustable sensor links from http://ift.tt/1u3akbD to raise the front just a little. Kinda like having a leveling kit. Now, both the front and rear have the same wheel gap at about 4.25".

So far I've only adjusted the front 1" up from stock and the ride seems to be about the same. If this stops my tire rub, I'll probably just keep the extra height at 1".

front end noise

So i HATE working with gears. its a pain. so i had a limited slip in the front axle of my wj grand cherokee. i had an aussie locker and when i was ready to put it in instead of switching carriers and reshimming and backlash and all that crap i just got an axle with an open diff. took the carrier out, took the ring gear off (some people said you can just grind a tooth to get the cross shaft out, no thanks) so got it off, put the locker in, ring gear back where it came from and i put it back in. new bolts, everything is torqued. now when i drive its making noise. i cant figure out why or how, i didnt mess with anything, bearing caps and shims went back in the same sides. its not a constant whining or hum youd expect from gears not meshing, it goes up and down in volume. im pretty much stumped. any ideas?

CJ memorabilia

Hey Everyone,

I was searching the Turkish version of Ebay here in Turkey. I came across the following item. It says it's a cutout from an American magazine from the 60's (false information because the ad talks about a '74 Renegade).

If anyone is interested in this, I can purchase and ship it to you.

It's listed at 10 Turkish Lira which is about $5.

Considering Lift

I just purchased a 2000 WJ 4X4 which I plan to use as an everyday driver. I like the lifted look though I don't want to jeopardize the safety and/or the integrity of the ride. I would be using it on some light trails but no rock climbing. I was thinking 2” to 3” lift. I read some of the posts on the forum and called several of the local 4X4 shops to get there recommendation on manufacturers. It sounds like Iron Rock and Rusty’s have some of the better kits. Any other kits recommended? How about installers in the Phoenix area? Thanks

Upgrade speakers or add a sub

So I have an aftermarket head unit with rca outs. The previous owner had a sub because the wires are already ran and the previous owner ran wires new wires to the door speakers to the head unit because I had the infenity system. The whole thing is kinda butcherd. So my question is would it be better to add a 4 channel amp and upgrade the door speakers or just add a sub, I was thinking 8" to save on space but could possibly do 10"

HHO on ZJ?

mercredi 29 octobre 2014

Anyone hookup a HHO system on their ZJ?

1986 CJ7 Laredo back from the dead...

So my project vehicle is finally going to end up as my Daily Driver since my girl friends ****ty Chrysler sebring took a crap on her, and I'm nice enough to let her drive my WJ till she can get a new car.

The CJ runs pretty well so far but I do have a few questions on it.

When starting after sitting for a day, it cranks alot before she finally starts up. This is with pumping the pedal, is this normal for most CJ's? Or am I losing fuel pressure somewhere along the way?

After it starts the exhaust smell is so bad it gives my girl friend a headache in minutes, where I go to get my inspection, they have never given a rat's *** about emissions as far as I can tell so I'm not too worried about that but are there any common spots on the CJ's where the exhaust begins to leak? There's no bad rust anywhere on the whole Jeep surprisingly as its been sitting in the backyard for 7 years now.

The smell gets into the cab while driving whether the doors/top is on or off and I've only been able to find some small holes in a metal (exhaust?) pipe.

And the brakes still seem to lack muscle, I can stop...but I probably couldnt stop if something unexpected happened on the road, I've replaced the front calipers and brake lines and bled the brakes, besides bleeding them more, is there anything else I can do?

And well, Ya'll will probably be seeing me post more in the CJ forum, so thanks for the help fellas and if there's anything else you think I should look at let me know!

2006 Wrangler Radio

I have two questions about my radio, the radio will not pick-up but 3 local radio stations and won't turn off when I shut the doors. Is that a common problem with Jeeps? This is a factory radio I installed after I removed the after market one.

No AC/Heat and Engine Overheating

Hey guys, I have a couple of questions. First, I have no AC or heat. They both went out at the same time with no gradual decrease. I have previously replaced my blower motor resistor in a separate Jeep and that fixed it. However, this time my ac/heat is totally out, not just a few settings (last time it was the 3 and 4 settings that were out). Should I replace the resistor, the blower motor, both or neither?

My engine keeps overheating. When it happens, it goes from 210 to around 250 in a second. I replaced my radiator, thermostat, and inlet and outlet hoses on the radiator. I was planning on doing a tuneup this week and giving the engine a good detailing to see if anything is amiss. I was also going to replace the temp sensor, too. I'm kind of at a loss as to what else it could be. I guess the water pump is never totally out of the picture.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

4lo makes whining sound

Its my first post on this forum. I've been looking for a Grand for a little while now and have really benefited from the massive amounts of knowledge on this forum. It's an amazing resource and i just wanted to thank all you who have contributed.

I've a particular question of my own to ask and i'm hoping i can again call on your assistance to help me out of a bit of a jam.

As i said, i've been looking for a WJ, my first Jeep. Actually it'll be my first 4wd. Looking for something stock that i can build into a reasonable off-roader over the years. I've got a very strict criteria and am really only considering the very best examples i can find. I've got a checksheet that's 5 pages long so not many cars i've seen have made the grade.

I've found an Overland that came up sparlkingly well on my inspection and i was very happy with it. It's an '05, MY04, it has 137,000kms on the clock. I had a mechanic look it over for me, but the vehicle is located in a country area and as Jeeps are pretty uncommon in Aus and seen as a soccer mum's luxury bus, i don't think he's seen too many of them.

He picked up a high pitch whine when the car is in 4Lo and diagnosed it as probably needing a transfer case rebuild. There's no such noise in 4Hi. He said he thought the bearings were shot and if he had to guess, he'd say it would've been caused by a very large boat being towed up and down landing ramps.

Now, when i drove the car myself, i noticed the whine. It wasn't loud, but it was there, and i haven't noticed it on any other Overland i've driven, though i've only tested 2 others.

So i told the seller and he took it to his mechanic to check out. His guy looked at it and said it was fine, there's no problem. The guy working on it used to work for a Jeep dealer in the city so he should know. They said that noise i'm hearing is normal. I'll call them tomorrow to hear it from the horses mouth.

The car has been owned by the just the seller and his dad before him who bought it new so it has a known history. They say it's never been off-road and the undercarriage tells the same story. They've both towed boats with it, but nothing near the size suggested by my mechanic.

The car is immaculate! From the interior and exterior, you'd pass it easily for a 2 year old car. There's no other mechanical issue, all the gadgets work perfectly, this car really has been looked after.

My question.... Am i being paranoid?? If the owner's story of the car's history is true, then i can't see how the transfer case would need a rebuild if the thing has only seen 4Lo for no more than a few minutes in it's entire life. Can you guys confirm that 4Lo does have a bit of a whine to it?

On the other side, i'm paying over 10 grand for a car that i intend to keep running for another 10 years if possible. I really want the best i can find and don't want to find myself with something that will just give me headaches.

I know it's a hard one, but any thoughts would be very welcome. Cheers.

What is the proper TJ wheel offset?

Hope someone can help me with a question that has been bothering me for a while. As I see from the specs on my TJ Sahara standard wheels have +38 offset, according to most repair manuals and recomendations new wheels should have the same to avoid issues with suspension. However looking for new jeep wheels I see a spread of recomendations with offset +25 to -38, some sites and manufacturers do not even list their offset numbers just stating Low, medium high and so on. For me a change from +38 to -38 seems like a big one. Does anybody know what are manufacturesrs requerments on the wheel offset for the Jeep? What would be the best offset to take?

Radiator Mounting Question?

mardi 28 octobre 2014

The PO installed a new radiator. The top of the radiator is not mounted to anything, its just flopping around, So I disassembled most of the front end. There are studs on the top of the radiator that are supposed to stick up through the metal crossmember above the radiator but, the radiator is sitting so low that the studs cannot make it through the holes in the aforementioned crossmember.

Is there something missing at the bottom of the radiator that is supposed to support it and get it higher up to let the studs go through the mouting holes?

Thanks.

USA Bikini Top

I got my USA Top today. (see other threads)

Immediately on taking it out of the box, it was obvious that it weighed more than my old Bestop bikini. The thickness and quality of materials is obvious. The webbing is thick and sturdy, yet supple and soft. Where the webbing attaches to the top, itself is heavily stitched and reinforced. The seam, across the top centers perfectly on my roll bar.

I got the black denim, which is a perfect match with my Smittybilt wind jammer.

It took a few minutes to get it installed. It fit perfectly into the windshield track (better than my Bestop) What took time, was fishing the webbing through the buckles. The thick webbing was a little tight. To me, this is a good thing. It shouldn't slip, at all.

II did get a little pleating, just behind the windshield frame but I suspect that's just from being folded up, in the box. I expect it will relax and smooth out in a day or two. I also have a little bit of a wrinkle on the rear portion that I believe is caused by my footmans loops being right on the corners of my Jeep. If they were more in line with where the webbing comes off the top, I believe that wrinkle would disappear.

Overall, I'm very pleased with my first impression. My Jeep is a daily driver and I may be making a 1300 mile road trip with it in the near future, so updates will be coming.

Greetings of the Season to all..............

Hi to all........... :2thumbsup:

I have been browsing this forum and I am proud to be a new member of this esteemed forum,

Hoping to get some good inputs from the forum on the topic on a used Grand Cherokee ZJ 4.06l 1996. I've been researching these cars a couple years, so I know the usual and while it has all records and all the typical things that go wrong have already happened. I'm just curious to assume that now if one could expect something to continue to pop-up every few thousands miles?

I've read many mixed reviews on these cars. Many owners have said these vehicles have been relatively trouble-free, besides the usual's (ABC pumps, coils, etc.)

A friend of mine suggested a website: " the autopartsshop.com " offering discounts & 2 yrs warranty on auto parts .:dunno:

I was wondering if the above given website is a genuine one.

Any valuable inputs from owners of these cars would be most helpful …....... :newbie:

1995 YJ Hardtop

shaking fillings out of my teeth

:mad:Can anybody give me a suggestion on what springs I can use to replace the factory pieces in my '98 Cherokee Classic? I don't intend to off-road as mine is a tow behind for my motorhome. I love my Jeep but the ride is too rough even after replacing the shocks. Would 2WD springs fit and have a softer spring rate than the 4WD parts? I have a substantial tow bar baseplate and factory skidplate in front and added a factory skid plate and a heavy duty receiver hitch in the rear but no noticeable change was observed. HELP!

93 zj ABS light on rear brakes lock up

Recently had my front drive shafts replaced at local 4x4 shop and not to far in the future my ABS light came on. Rear brakes lock up if barely touching pedal.

Drivers side AC only cold air

Hi guys it seems like the last couple of days I've become cursed or something because I keep getting stupid problems.

Anyway today just as it's getting cold I noticed that the AC on the drivers side was blowing only cold air regardless of what the temperature is set on.

So I did a diagnostic test and it said Error 54 (Left temperature door travel too large) witch I'm guessing means that the blend door isn't functioning witch is apparent since only cold air is coming out.

I also tried the Ignition IN and set to Auto remove the fuse procedure to try and reinitialize the AC but it seems to have had no effect.

Now what I've noticed is that if I move the passenger temp control I can hear a buzzing coming form the console but if I move the drivers temp knob I can't hear anything.

So I guessing if it was the blend door broken hinge I would still be able to hear the actuator running right?

If it in fact is the actuator this means it has to come out right?

Meaning I'd have to take out the complete dash to access the AC unit behind it and access the drivers side actuator. Right?

I took a look under the dash and saw there's a rod behind and above the mode actuator witch I can see moving and I'm guessing this is the one that controls the blend doors right?

I read somewhere that the actuator could have just seized up if taken apart I could reassemble it and maybe get it to work?

Is there any other thing I can try to at least get the hot air working since I'm not going to need it until the summer.

Thanks for the help guys it's really important that I at least diagnose the problem correctly since I can't afford to take it to the dealer right now so I need to know what I'm getting myself into if I'm to try and fix it myself.

Best regards.

Ignition problems

So recently my jeep won't start. When I turn the key the starter doesn't spin. I tested my starter and it works so I went through all my connections and redid them and still won't spin. Could this be my ignition switch? Any input would be appreciated

new steering box

this weekend i replaced the steering box on my Xj. In the process of removal i broke the resevoir so I replaced my pump as well. i got it all put back together with a JCR steering spacer. My steering is very stiff to the left. I purged the air out of the pump and made the whining stop but still very stiff. Is it me not being used to a new steering box or is it possibly adjusted to tight out of the box. Or did i mess something up.

Radio controls in steering wheel

Hello all

I'm having a little trouble with the radio controls in the steering wheel, that is the buttons on the left hand front. The button that's supposed to jump between the preset stations is somewhat off and instead starts scanning in either direction. Not a serious problem but kind of annoying...

Have you had this problem? What have you done about it? Is it simple to fix or do I need to replace something (couldn't find this in the parts manual)?

Best wishes

Replacing an air con condenser

Anyone changed one? The one on my 2.7 CRD is leaking and I want to change it. Can it be done without disturbing the radiator?

TH400 Converter and Reprograming Kit???

I was told that if I get a 2600-2800 stall converter that i should put a programming kit in it. Is this true? I just had the Trans built so all is fresh and the guy who built it said he would adjust it so it shifts consistent when in the throttle (5500 rpm) I am just wondering if anyone has used one of these reprogramming kits or if anyone has had issues with new converter and no reprogramming kit. The converter guy says I need it.

'01 4.7L Which Spark Plugs

i have always used champion RC12MCC4 in my 4.7 but recently went into the parts store but had forgotten which plugs i had used and they looked it up and tried to sell me platinum plugs. When i first bought this jeep It had been recommended to me to use the Champion plugs mentioned above which is why i have been using them. Seems i remember reading somewhere a while back that i shouldn't use anything other than the above plugs because pre-ignition would occur with anything other than copper core.. Anyone care to chime in with there thoughts?

Death wobble

Me and my girlfriend were driving down the road doing about 30mph. I hit a little bump in the road and it made my jeep shake and wobble back and forth uncontrollably almost. What can i do to prevent this?

Aloha....I'm new here!

In 2013, I bought my beloved Island Jeep, Brumby: an '87 Yj with 35" tires. I've spent the last year getting it ready for Kauai beach fun. While some of the mods done in the past are great, others are not so much. In any case, I love my old gray mule!

Am looking forward to learning a lot here!

:cheers2:

High mileage oil change 10w30 or 10w40?

I just bought a 95 ZJ 4.0 with 255K on it. The PO always used Pennzoil High mileage oil in 5w30. In all my cars I use 5or10w40. Would switching to a w40 oil at 255K help or hurt the engine with such high mileage?

Another Headlights don't work thread

samedi 25 octobre 2014

Already did a search, and didn't find anything to help, so here it goes -

98 Cherokee Classic, 4.0l, 4wd, auto trans, bone stock, 221k miles - original owner, no Daytime running light, no security system.

My headlight switch mechanically failed - the plunger stopped engaging the detents for parking position and headlight position (I could hear a piece rattling around in the switch when I removed it. Prior to this, I had no issues with the headlights. Bought a new switch at the local auto parts place, installed it, and now I've got all (parking, blinkers, brake, hazards and fog) except for headlights working in high or low position. Thought it could be a bad switch, so got another; same result. Tried a third from another auto parts store, same result (luckily everyone has a really good return policy!).

Checked all headlight related fuses in passenger compartment (3,4,5 and 16 if I recall correctly); nothing blown.

Checked fuses in engine compartment (I think 19 is headlights); nothing blown, and I can't find reference to a headlight relay there.

I've got 12.xx v on the brown/black wire at the switch, 0v at the red/white wire at the switch, and jumping those two doesn't cause the headlights to come on. This doesn't make any sense to me-I thought red/white was power into the switch from the battery, and brown/black was power out to multifunction switch, but I haven't been able to find a good wiring diagram.

]

Any ideas? I'm starting to lean toward a burned out multifunction switch, but it's too dark and late to start that process tonight.

Orange County Tools?

Anyone know of any place in Orange county, California that will rent a Dial Bore Gauge? I really don't want to have to buy one to use it once and prob not have to use it again for 10 years.

Already check the usual suspects, all the part store chains. any other ideas?

New person... Sorry everyone

New Person with Questions! (Sorry)

Hey y'all! I recently just got a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Altitude Edition. (If you have to know, I went with granite crystal I am I college, and my parents are pi bringing it down this weekend so I can FINALLY HAVE IT! (I live in Virginia, and I got to THE University of Alabama, and 12 hours is a long trip) I was curious to know if anyone knew if the uconnect system will work with iOS 8. I have an iPhone 5S currently, and it has iOS 8 now, and I will soon be getting the iPhone 6 for Christmas. In my car, I have the uconnect 8.4A, which in sure most of y'all knew anyway. If anyone knows, please let me know!

ALSO, if anyone knows how much it costs to download the Navigation for the 8.4A, please let me know as well, as well as how long it will take to download. I do a lot of driving, and trying to drive while looking at a tiny iPhone screen and controlling everything else around me is very distracting.

PS. If anyone was wondering, I got a back up camera added aftermarket for only $600, if anyone was curious.

Thank y'all so much! So glad to be in the Jeep family!

I need help ASAP transmission slipping

3 upgrades, any experience w/ them?

So, I"ve had my unlimited sahara, jeep a year, with some off road, living in snow country(lake tahoe, ca). Drive a lot, 500 miles a week +. heading to moab for week soon, want to do some of the easier trails per ratings.

3 upgrades I'm thinking of doing, shocks, slightly bigger tires, true trac diff.

1. shocks;

I put the rancho 900s on, but don't think they are too great. a little better then stock maybe, but I want the best suspension for road and off road.

I am thinking of fox 2.0 performance reservoir w/ compression adj of 8 clicks.

seems more quaity, still adjustable, and hopefully better ride. experience? yes, htey are 320each instead of 70ish, but this is long term, and if it's better, worth it.

2. true trac, lots of good reviews, but some questions. daily driving, snow country, any negatives? i think traction improvement would be great for off road and when roads are really snowy, just want to make sure pos outweigh and negs.

3. tires,

I have run a few, have revo at 2 now in 265/70/17 on 9 inh wide rime.

they are just under 32. I am thinking either toyo open country at2 or nitto terra grappler G2 both in 285/70r17. I like that both come in P rated, 45 or 48lbs, so not terrible on milage. now, I average 20 on my revo 2 or hankook ipike studded in winter, a bit bigger, but not too heavy, maybe 1 -1.5 in milage, but better off road.

Any experience w/ these products?

thoughts?

thx!

Hello from Texas!

Long time Mopar guy ( I even run my own Mopar Forum), I've owned a 3 Jeeps previous to the WJ I just got from my sister. It's my daily beater, and needs a bit of TLC. Never really got into trail driving, more of a 1320 guy. That being said, I do love these things, love working on them, and while I may not have a ton of Jeep specific knowledge, I have a good bit of Mopar knowledge...engines, transmissions, and for whatever reason, radios.

Hope to learn and have fun here!

2003 Jeep Overlander Diesel

Out of the blue I have a "grinding" noise coming from the nearside front? You can feel the vibration under foot on the passenger side. It doesn't last for a long period of time just intermittently and not every day. Sometimes it can stop for weeks. It doesn't seem to be speed related, it happens once the engine has warmed a little but never from cold. Anyone have any ideas please?

Wiring in 12v cig. outlet. Where should I access power from?

I'm looking to add in 2 12v cig. Lighter ports into my jeep. 1 passenger side center console & the other back passenger quarter panel. Used for whatever may be needed.

Would like the front to. Work like factory. Power with the ignition.

The rear I'd like to run to a switch, so I can access power there anytime without needing ignition power. It would be used for a small compressor or something along those lines. Maybe charge a portable DVD player from time to time.

Where would be the best place to grab power from? I am assuming a inline fuse & 10g should be more than sufficient? No need for relays?

Just saying hello *newbie*

Hello everyone. I'm new to jeeps just bought my first one yesterday. 2012 wrangler sport 4x4. I have a idea list a mile long. Where's a good place to start with these?? Anything I need to know?

Belt Problems

HAve a 1993 jeep grand cherokee, Recently serpentine belt started squealing pretty bad wasnt a gradually squeal was kind of an all of a sudden started squeal. Looked under the hood and noticed that my belt is pushed all the way back on my fan pulley and the pulley underneath of it the belt is coming off the pulley. Figured something made it slip, Push it backed to where it should be. Started the car back up within about 4 revolutions of the belt, pushed back on the fan pulley again and again started coming off the pulley underneath of it. Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Just replaced the belt about 2 months ago so im pretty sure its not a belt problem

Cylinder 1 occasional misfire - plug and coil OK - where to look next?

For about 3 years now, my 2005 KJ has had an intermittent misfire on cylinder 1. The plug and coil have been replaced twice, but still the problem recurs.

There's no specific trigger that I can discern. One day the CEL will come on, I'll pull the codes and it'll be P0300 and P0301. I'll reset them and the CEL will stay off for a while - at one point last year, it stayed off for over 1500 miles of driving - but usually it'll be back within about a week, which equates to about 200 miles.

I never actually notice the misfire, and the engine seems to be running as smoothly as it ever did, apart from a slightly lumpy idle (which may just be down to a dirty IAC motor - it's never been cleaned since the Jeep was new). If I don't bother to reset the code the CEL will eventually go off by itself, which I guess means the problem hasn't recurred within the last 50 key cycles.

So... any suggestions of where to look? I'd like to nail this one permanently if possible, but obviously such an intermittent fault could well be extremely difficult to run to ground.

New offroad lights installed

So at $11 a piece from Amazon so i couldn't resist getting a few. I still need to hook up the ones on the roof but the ones on the bumper are working.

heavy trailer with brakes or lighter trailer without?

In a couple weeks I will be towing my wifes car (Toyota Celica) 1100 miles across the country and I need some advice on which trailer setup is best. My 04 Grand Cherokee has the 4.7L V8 but it did not come from the factory with the tow package. I've installed a hitch and wiring harness and used it to tow lighter trailers the same distance and its worked great. I have experience towing utility trailers but I've never towed a car and I have some concerns.

First is which type of trailer to use. I'll be renting from Uhaul so I have the option of a tow dolly or an auto hauler. I'm aware of the limitations of backing up a tow dolly. What I'm most concerned with is the additional weight of the auto hauler vs the lack of brakes on the tow dolly. With the auto hauler I'm looking at a combined trailer/load weight of about 5000lbs with the added assistance of surge brakes on the trailer. With the dolly the combined weight is about 3600lbs without any trailer brakes. Is a 5000lb trailer with brakes safer than a 3600lb trailer without? Does anyone have some experience towing either of these trailers with their WJ?

Second, I do not have an additional transmission cooler but could install one myself for around $60. Based on my experience I don't think I'll need it if I use the tow dolly. Would I need this to tow the auto hauler or will the stock cooler be sufficient? Thanks in advance!

Stainless Steel Door Hinge Pins

Magnitude Engineering's premium line of stainless steel replacement pins for Jeep Wrangler door hinges will allow you to replace your corroded, deteriorated, broken, or worn out pins with ease. Whether you are trying eliminate unsightly rust, compensate for years of wear, fix that door that won't latch properly, or prevent potentially damaging leaks due to door misalignment; replacing your pins is a simple and cost effective way to improve the appearance and operation of your door.

Simply remove the old pins and insert new ones in their place without the extra time, expense, and risk of replacing your hinges. As opposed to replacing your hinges, replacing only your pins minimizes the risk stripping a screw, exposing unpainted steel, or damaging paint on your door that could cause it to rust.

Magnitude Engineering's premium replacement pins are precision machined from solid stainless steel bar. Unlike OEM or other replacement pins that are cold formed from rust susceptible mild steel and coated with a thin layer of plating that can be scratched or wear away over time, these solid stainless steel pins will not flake or rust.

Do they ever fix the recalls?

I have a 2003. I,m sure some of you got the recall for the seat heater part and I have got two on the air bags. I have called several times but they keep saying they have not got the parts yet. The seat heaters was 4 years ago. Anyone know?

Transfer case locked

I have a 74 CJ5 w/ 252. the drive train is stock. 3 speed trans. Not sure what model trans or dif. anyway, I put it in four wheel and it went fine for about 25 yards then all four wheels locked and stalled the motor. After some cursing and muscle I was able to disengage the four wheel drive and put the transfer case back into neutral. It drives just fine in 2 wheel.

any ideas? I've never worked on a transfer case and this thing has never been services in the last 20+ years and driven only 500 miles in that time.

Thanks.

93 YJ about to drive cross country, need to fix rough acceleration

Hi, I bought my first wrangler in Miami, FL and hope to fix this persisting vibration problem before driving it home to Oregon next month. A few months ago I noticed a change in the amount of vibration I felt when accelerating over 1500rpm in any gear—it was an immediate change one day and felt like something either "busted" or came lose as I was driving.

Since then I've searched forums and tried to fix little things that could be the culprit, such as old hoses or possibly burnt out spark plugs: I changed the heater/radiator hoses and replaced sparkplugs, wires, & rotary cap. I also ran some fuel-injector/carb-cleaner through the gas tank, and I put brand new tires on a few months ago. The jeep shifts fine and the gas mileage doesn't seem to have gotten any worse, so my novice guess is that there's something wrong with the tightness of connection around the trans-mount/driveshaft...but this is just a guess and it could still be due to a seal/hose I haven't found (despite no leaks under the car) or a persisting engine problem (despite no check engine light warning).

Does anyone have any common trouble areas to check for this sort of problem with a 93 stock YJ?

Thanks for any advice/help. Feel free to dump as many clarification questions on me as needed, as I'm hoping to learn as much as I can from solving this mystery.

93 ZJ - No Brake Lights (Searched and Checks Done)

I have a ’93 ZJ Laredo V8 with the factory tow package (7-pin) which I’ve owned for the last 20 years. It’s a fairly base model and does not have LOM or VIC. We recently did Monstaliner on the exterior and pulled the exterior lighting and lenses as well as the rear hatch and front hood to facilitate easier painting. We also pulled the rear factory hitch to apply Chassis Saver and topcoat with a flat black bedliner. When everything was disassembled… we did occasionally start it to drive in and out of the garage.

Most everything is back together now… including the rear hatch. All of the lighting works… with the exception of the brakes lights (all three). I’ve searched extensively… and performed all of the relevant tests and analysis based on the threads I’ve found. Unfortunately many of the threads end without the original questioner saying what ultimately fixed the problem… I will not do that with this thread.

Here is what I’ve tried so far…

• All parking lights work (front and back)

• Four-way lights work (front and back)

• Reverse lights work

• Fuse #2 has been checked and is OK

• I’ve checked for power on the harness to the brake switch (on the pedal) and it is getting power

• I’ve checked for continuity at the brake switch per the test outlined here ( http://ift.tt/1wgjIcF )… and no issues were found

• I’ve checked and double checked that all harnesses are connected… although I have not reattached the 7-pin trailer receptacle to the hitch yet (it’s hanging there)… but there does not appear to be a ground related to that.

Needless to say… I’m baffled. I’ve even looked under the hood at the relay box but could not find anything relating to the brakes. I have not checked for power to the 7-pin towing harness yet to see if it is working properly… but can do that tonight. I’ve tried to follow the wiring diagram (in Haynes) to see what is after the brake switch… but I was unable to see where the power goes.

Somehow the power is getting lost between the brake switch and the lights in the back. Any ideas or guesses on this? What else should I try? Everything worked a couple weeks ago before we took it apart for painting. All help is much appreciated!!

Many thanks,

1974 CJ5 Newbie

Good Morning Jeep Fanatics -

The name is JP, and my dad just gifted me with a 1974 CJ5 that he bought off of ebay last year.

Here are some disclaimers about me:

Totally new to tinkering and modifications. I have 2 little boys who want to start turning wrenches and learning. I too have ambitions of doing the same. I grew up watching my father work on vehicles, but, sadly, I never took much interest, until now that is...

So, like any person who has interest and true grit, I pulled the beast into the garage tonight, lifted the hood and started looking for common wear and tear issues.

1st Issue spotted

When we drove the jeep today, the temperature gauge went to HOT pretty quickly. But, the fuel gauge was also acting funny/not accurate. We decided to not push it so we let it cool down. However, after letting it cool down for about 2 hours, we started it back up. The radiator and engine were cool to the touch, yet the thermostat was still showing hot??? When I turn the keys over to battery, the gauges aren't working, it seems. When I start it up the gauge goes to H - immediately.

OVERHEATING? or BAD GAUGE?

Hoses are beat to hell and showing their age. Specifically the hose from the radiator to the engine block where the thermostat is housed. I pulled that stubborn SOB off tonight and drained the coolant. I also thought that perhaps the thermostat may have been sticking? I have heard that term before. Not sure what that means other than by "sticking" it can fool the gauge to thinking its Hot? <---- HELP HERE

I have the hoses and thermostat pulled off the radiator and engine. I was planning on taking them to AutoZone tomorrow to see if they could help me source the parts at their store. When I went there last night and gave them my year and model, there were 3 options I believe in engine size, none of which are mine. My engine is, as far as I can tell, not one of the listed engines. The desk assistant said "Oh, well, you are going to need to know what engine you have so that we can get you the right part, or you will need to pull the thermostat"

ISSUE: What if the the thermostat that is in there is wrong to begin with? Shouldn't I know what engine I have to be certain?

Herein lies my other issue:

I dont know what type of engine I have. The last guy that worked on it stated that it was a 307. I can tell you it sounds like a dragster when it starts up - LOUD/STRONG/AGGRESSIVE

I imagine that an engine swap occurred when in the hands of the previous owner, to which I have no contact.

ENGINE QUESTION:

How the heck do I identify what engine I have, so that I can start getting the correct parts?

Thanks so much. I look forward to chatting with you all and sharing my progress and I bury myself inside the Jeep lifestyle.

-JP-

heater control unit

I have a 95 XJ and the selector switch is stuck in the heat location. I can select any position and it still out the defroster and floor. The only time it shuts off is when I put it in the off position. I bought a brand new unit to replace the old one and I'm still having the same issue. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do to trouble shoot this and get it fixed. I appreciate any help I can get. Thanks for your time!!

Vic switch panel

mercredi 22 octobre 2014

So I converted my Vic into a switch panel today.

Here are some pics.

I started by taking the guts out of the Vic.

I then laid everything out and cut out the switch holes. I cut my switch holes a little big.

I then cut out the back of the Vic housing to bring the wires through.

And here is a look of it all together with the switches installed.

Diagnosis on engine misfire/sputtering

Hey there,

Been a while, but it seems I need everyone's help again. My 1992 YJ 4.0 is having some engine trouble. Basically it's sputtering and missing a lot in third gear from 2-3000 rpms and in fourth from 2500 on up. Prior to the problem it had been 30,000 miles since the last oil change or air filter. It was leaking everywhere. I remedied all the leaks and gave her a half *** tune up once she started missing. Seafoamed the oil too before I dropped it.

Still having the problem. Pulled one spark plug, had a little bit of corrosion on it but I thought it would be ok. checked for excessive blow-by.. Injectors should be alright although I haven't ruled them out. Reset the ECM, and it went away for about 10 miles then came back.

Planning on checking for spark on all the plugs next, as well as a short.

Any other ideas?

are vanco legit?

I ordered a 15" big brake kit from vanco in march and have herd nothing but excuses as to why I haven't received them yet and now every time I call it rings until voice-mail cuts in. has any one else had this same problem?

AMC 304 with 360 Intake PCV Problem!

On my 304 i am running a two barrel 360 intake, behind the carb it does not have a spot for a pcv valve, it has a tube screwed into the intake where the pcv would normally be. I am not sure how to add in a pcv valve and i know that it needs one because i have oil vapor coming from the oil fill tube and also i seem to be developing leaks from the crankcase pressure. My valve covers do not have a spot for a pcv valve either. Also does the pcv need manifold vacuum to work?

why does a 1500 ram get better mpg then a wk?

why does a 4x4 1500 ram with the hemi get better mpg then a wk with a hemi? my neighbor has a 13 ram1500 5.7 with 3.92 gears and he is getting 16mpg out that truck 50/50 city/highway driving. i don't think i have ever heard of a hemi GC getting that kinda mpg.

Spare carrier LJ?

I can't open my tailgate! I have a cargo carrier with a rise in the shank. Problem is, no the hardtop is on, the tailgate doesn't open far enough to get the glass up. I'd also love to get that weight off the tailgate.

Any product suggestions? I have talked to a good local welder, he wants to do something custom.

Thanks

Climate Control Woes

Hi all,

Having issues with the CC on my 95 ZJ.

Here's the scoop: With the fan on high on heat or cool, and pertaining to the dash vents only, I'm not getting sufficient flow. The floor vents kick out plenty of air, but the on the dash vents, only in the center two vents give flow, and little at that.

I did a bit of reading, and I guess I'm supposed to look for a blend door vac line? I've looked and looked, but can't seem to find where said vac tube is.

Also, anything else I should check while down there?

Greatly appreciated.

Battery Terminal Upgrade?

Just curious if those of you running winches/compressors/lights/etc. have found it necessary to upgrade your battery terminals with something like this from Quadratec. http://ift.tt/1Dy1RyX

At this point I only have the headlight harness (to bypass the CANBUS) but I plan to add an SPOD and lights soon.

So is beefing up the terminals worth it, or should I spend the money on something else? :D

247 to 242 help

I just got a 2002 grand cherokee loredo with the quadratrac II system and I want to swap it over to the selectrac 242 TC. I have read a lot on here about it but I just wanted to be sure I know what I need. My jeep has the 4.0 which seems to be rare with the 247 so most of the swap threads all deal with the 4.7. Can I just swap to the 242 TC without a new rear DS or will I still need the rear DS from . another model? Thanks for the help for this jeep newbie!

Need Advice/Stop Plug/Leaking Coolant

Hey guys-

Dropped the Jeep off at the shop the other day (99 Grand Cherokee Laredo with 4.0 I6, 2wd, 186k miles) - was having problems with it overheating on occasion and a coolant leak (and heat wasn't working).

Mechanic called me and said water pump and thermostat needed to be replaced - ok- did that. Good news is that it seems to be running cooler and not overheating and the heat in the Jeep works again BUT I noticed I'm still leaking coolant.

So I drop it back off this morning- mechanic just calls me and says its a stop plug that its leaking out of. Something about it being between the engine and the transmission and transmission actually has to come out to get to it. Said it would be about $350 to fix.

Any advice? Should I do it? Get a second opinion? Is this legit?

T400 automatic transmission (original owner only had one leg). Runs extremely well. Located in San Diego, CA. This is one of the best off-road vehicles I have ever owned. Asking around $10K. 2002 KJ Security Lugs

My girlfriend comes over earlier today saying that her brakes are feeling a bit spongey. I take a look under her Jeep and notice that brake fluid is pouring out of the passenger rear drum. Doing a bit of research I believe it may be the brake cylinder.

Right off the bat, the biggest obstacle seems to be this 6 spline security lug nut set that is on her Jeep. I'm assuming that they did not come from the factory this way?

I can't seem to find a key anywhere within the vehicle, does anyone happen to know the dimensions that I would need for these lugs? I keep finding varying answers while searching.

Am I crazy or can I fix this halfway decent?

I have some rust in two spots, one is the bottom of both doors (rocker panels are clean, doors only) and the passenger front panel.

I was going to pay a body shop $400.00 to repair but bolstered by my POR-15 floor pan repair I am thinking maybe I can do this myself (and I am worried that the body shop might just cover it without treating it and end up coming back).

Can I just wire brush and POR-15 the affected areas and then cover? For the front panel I would hit it with color matched paint (or something close) and for the door I am thinking just tape off a line below the trim and plasti dip everything below it including the rocker panels. Will the plasti dip protect the unrusted areas?

I dont want it to look totally rigged up but if I can save a few bucks and know that the rust is gone for good I would be happy.

Winter is coming. So are the heater issues.

Hey all.

1998 TJ, 2.5, 4.

I plan on diving into my heater core this weekend or the next, workplace depending.

Just wanted to ask some advice before I get in there.

So basically I've recently discovered my heater isn't pumping out the heat it should be. It's barely lukewarm.

I haven't used the heater since buying the Jeep, so I'm not sure if it's normal, but when I slide the lever on the vent selector there is a brief hissing for a couple seconds with an odd odor, before it goes back to normal.

Trying to get it fixed before the traitorous winter of Minnnesota hits me, and it's coming quick.

Any idea would be appreciated! :cheers2:

Noob question sorry

Hey guys sorry for the noob question but I have a 2010 jeep wrangler unlimited I'm slowly building it up. Right now I'm putting on a 20 inch double row light bar the one that goes across the hood. I got the bracket from rough country. But where I messed up I was going to remove the stock bolts that hold the hinges down to the hood and ROUNDED all 4 of em off so now I'm trying to use an extractor and it's a mess but what I was gonna ask is there's a little piece of metal looks like it's inside the hood that the hinge actually bolts down to well I bent one of mine and I'm guessing I need a new one! First whats that piece called second where could I find it and third how the hell do I get it out!

Sorry if this is some dumb questions but I appreciate any replys

Replacing head gasket, and head 0331

2000 xj 4.0, possible blown head gasket. I have replaced everything in the cooling system aside from the upper hose and radiator. Radiator is 6 months old, has no blockages.

I obviously have the 0331 head(non tupy), I have decided to go ahead and do the head gasket.

I decided replacing the head while I am at it, so I don't have to worry about the infamous crack.

I know everyone is going to say, aftermarket head or tupy 0331. I have a 7120 sitting on my parts jeep in my yard. I have read a reasonable amount into it. I get alot of mixed info on what is required to make it fit. From what i read, there is no hole for the idler pulley. I am fine with that.

I also read on the 0630 head, the 0331 exhaust manifold doesn't just bolt on. Most people replace the manifold with a rugged ridge header, and that the 7120 is identical to the 0630, meaning it will have the same issue. I also have the entire exhaust from my 95 xj country for retrofitting purposes.

I am mostly looking for opinions, and if possible, first hand experience on this subject. I plan on buying a 7120 head gasket kit, and having the head go to the machine shop so I don't want to waste money nor time doing this if it doesn't match up.

All help is appreciated.

Rotating Mass and Unsprung weight

These topics have been argued back and forth over the years, with some saying it matters a lot and others saying it doesn't matter that much.

My own experiences with it tell me it matters a lot.

I was watching the history channel today and the BigFoot guy (his nickname) who invented that Bigfoot truck was interviewed, and this topic came up.

He's of the opinion that saving weight on rotating mass is very important. He gave the old quote that saving 10 lbs of tire/wheel weight is as good as saving 100 lbs on the overall vehicle, especially when racing.

Blower motor cable

Having a bit of trouble with my heater core / evap fix on my 2000xj. Does anyone know where this cable that come from the blower motor plugs into? I'm totally lost and I've been looking for an hour and can't figure it out for the life of me. It comes down from the back of the blower in the hvac box and now I cannot find where it goes. Thanks in advance for any help.

Stalling at low speeds...

Never had this problem before, been wheeling a few times around the property and the jeep runs fine, maybe rarely will stall out of the blue when crawling over some tough terrain.

took it for a ride yesterday and almost every time i would get on the gas and then let off again the jeep would stall... put it in park, starts right up. idles fine, revs up fine, goes back to idle fine. soon as i go back into gear to continue and a few seconds/minutes (depends) later it will stall again on the deceleration (return back to idle) if that makes any sense. confused on why this randomly started. all help appreciated.

Hard top latch?

Just got the hard top on however I ran into a small issue. On the front of the hard top there are two latches that are used to secure the front. However I didn't receive any hardware to mount to the top of the windshield frame so that I could hook them.... Any ideas?

OEM headlight harness

I need to replace headlight harness in wifes 1993 cherokee. Does anybody have a part #. Next, if I can't get a new one what other jeeps used same harness?

Weird Shifting

Alright so, I've been driving it like this for awhile now and its just becoming annoying and killing my gas mileage (not that I expect to have great mileage with a lifted jeep) but 1st and 2nd gear wont shift until I hit a certain speed. For 1st gear, its about 25mph and for 2nd gear its about 47mph. After it hits 3rd gear its fine and goes into 4th no problem.

If I do not hit that certain speed in 1st or 2nd gear it'll sit in that gear until I do or of course down shift if I come to a stop.

Was thinking it might be the pressure solenoid and sensor.

Not to sure but ready to get it fixed.

If anyone else has experienced this or has any input, a bit of help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks guys!:D

crank no start WTF?

samedi 18 octobre 2014

94 ZJ limited 5.2 liter. It's run fine until a week ago. So, it did this thing where you'd start it then shift it in reverse or drive and it'd almost stall, and did stall a few times. But it happens rarely.

Anyways, I was driving for about 40 minutes last Sunday and everything was fine, then I'm driving down a straight road and all of a sudden the rpms dropped a little then it sputtered and died, wouldn't fire back up since then. Had to get towed home. I've been going crazy trying to figure it out. I have little money right now to throw into pointless parts. Turn ignition and the engine light comes on and abs, fuel pump works and all other electronics as well.i

2013 Lift Kit advice.

Just recently purchased my first Jeep. 2013 Unlimited Sahara. I drive about 150 round trip every third day to work. I'm looking for advice for a good 2.5-3.5" lift kit that will maintain a smooth drive that won't break the bank. I don't intend to do a lot on the trails, its mainly more for appearances. I would like to minimize the drop in fuel mileage as well. Looking for opinions as well on tire size ( 33 or 35's).

A/c

Troubleshooting AC, compressors running wondering what type of Freon a 95 takes. And if y'all have any other ideas why ac isn't blowing cold I will listen as long as it is reasonable

Now it wont start....

Ok. I have a 2001 Jeep Wrangler Sport. I rebuilt the motor and had it up and running about 6 months ago. I have changed the oil twice since the rebuild, probably around 4,000 miles on the new motor. Everything was running well until around two or three months ago, and last week she stopped all together.

After the rebuild the check engine light came on immediately, I read the code and it said it was an "Evap emission leak (small.)" I searched for any leak I could and was unable to locate any hoses or leaks, I assumed it was the gas cap. Replaced that and the light went out for a while. Then a few days later it was back on. I haven't been able to keep that light off or find a leak.

The first runability problem was that it would begin to stumble at highway speed. It would do it once or twice and then be fine. This happened a couple of different times.

The next thing that happened was that the engine would completely cut out and the jeep would stop running. I would pull over and the open the hood and it seemed like the engine bay was hotter than what I thought was normal (it was summer in Arkansas) so I simply thought that was the reason. Within a few minutes the Jeep would fire up and would run fine.

This continued to happen and it seemed for a while that it would only happen when it was very hot. (The oil pressure was in the normal range and so was the water temp gauge) The only difference is the more frequently this occurred, the longer it would take before it would restart and stay running.

Most recently, I started it up and drove it to the store (maybe 4 miles from home) and the motor cut off. I ended up towing it back to my house with my truck because I could never get it to restart.

I continued to try to get it to fire up over the subsequent weeks and it would occasionally "fire up" but it would not run, it would stumble so bad that it seemed to be only running on 2 or 3 cylinders then it would cough through the intake and shut down.

I first thought that maybe the coil packs were going out or maybe one or two of them had. I pulled the bar with the coil packs off and pulled all the spark plugs. They had black soot on them which was easy to clean off. I re-gapped them and put them back in the jeep. I also purchased a new set of coil packs (the bar) and replaced it. It will now crank and act link it wants to start, but the best I can get out of it is that it acts like it is running on two cylinders and the coughs/backfires through the throttle body and shuts off.

I can hear the fuel pump come on when I turn the key. I cannot figure out why it will not run. The whole series of events seems weird.

If anyone can give me some ideas where to start I would be extremely grateful!

Thanks.

2011 Blend Door Stuck?

Hi all,

I noticed a couple weeks ago that the passenger side air temperature is not changing when I adjust the temperature. It is dual-zone manual control. When I turn the fan up, it runs and then will suddenly stop.

I've read some other posts about this being a blend door problem, perhaps just a gear? Does someone have a write up on this or photos? Is this a 20 minute check or several hours?

Driver side seems to be fine other than the fan stopping and starting. I think I read somewhere on here that this is the computer detecting a problem and rebooting itself.

Looking at buying my first jeep

I have found a 2007 Jeep Rubicon Unlimited 4dr V6 3.8L with 228567 miles for $11,000. It is mostly highway miles. Is it ok to buy a Jeep with that many miles? I understand that I may have to fix a couple of things but should I be worried about any major problems?

The Jeep will be used as a second car for my wife and will only be driven 3 or 4 days a week carrying her and our newborn and will eventually be converted for primarily off road. Any advise?

2000 Jeep Cherokee XJ will not start at all.

I bought a 2000 XJ yesterday and I had to get it towed home. I bought it knowing that it had issues. The motor will not crank, all of the interior lighting and all of that comes on but as soon as you turn the key the starter will clunks and if you hold on the key long enough smoke starts to come down from where the starter is.

I saw the smoke last night when I tried to crank it and reached down to feel the wires to see if any were lose and they were extremely hot. I even threw a different battery in to see if that would change anything, I checked the relays and fuses in the fuse block and now I am at a dead end. Any input at all would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

ALOHA From Oahu Hawaii

vendredi 17 octobre 2014

Aloha all from Oahu Hawaii. New to the forum, but not new to the jeep brand. Previously owned an 05 TJ sport when I was in el paso TX. Just purchased a 79 CJ7. She currently has the following: AMC 304 V8 w/ edlebrock intake, air filter, and 1407 4 barrel carb and (mild cam from what previous owner states but no proof), Heddman Headers, TH400 3 speed auto trans, shackle over axle lift (about 6 inches) MT 15 in rims, Super Swamper 35x12.5 tires, full roll cage, entire tub herculined and some diamond plate and chrome parts here and there (rocker panel covers and other areas as well). History is unknown, clean title but only shows 4k miles due to not having original gauges. Currently has the NordsKopp electronic gauges if I am correct, non functioning minus the voltage meter and the turn signals on the main gauge. Have put in a little work since getting her about a month ago to include new transmission pan gasket, new valve covers/gaskets, new intake valley pan gaskets, ceramic coating the edelbrock intake manifold, rebuilt the carb, fixed exhaust leak between driver side head and exhaust manifold, new front calipers and pads, new stereo and kickers speakers, re installed front drive shaft and replaced all the vacuum hoses for the 4wd and moved the selector knob out of the glove box and directly onto the dash for easy access, and of course my road bell off my harley that I sold hahaha. About to replace the rear passenger side wheel hub and inner and outer axle seals, entire rear brake overhaul, new brake fluid res and hopefully thats it for now. I love these kinds of forums, have used them for every motorcycle I have owned and always prove to be a great resource for like minded individuals, advice, info, and of course parts. Look forward to seeing yall out there!
