My jeep is the quintessential daily driver/weekend wheeler. It brings me to work 5 days a week and allows me to wheel as often as I can get out on the trails. Things break on me more often than I would like but its always a challenge to get to work come Monday morning. As much as I enjoyed building this and wheeling it, I really like that it is comfortable enough to drive long distance on the freeway or even to go cruise the mall.

I purchased it stock minus an aftermarket stereo that I have replaced. Twice. I have done every modification myself with the exception of some axle work done with a warranty and a couple preassembled Craigslist jewels. All in all, I don't think I paid full price for anything I purchased and will only spend money if I'm getting a good deal. On the other hand, every custom modification has a purpose whether it be a misting system to keep me cool on the freeway or the conglomerate OBA system out together with things around the shop. I started by bolting things on but now an pulling some of these off and fabbing my own because I feel it will suit my needs if I built it to my own specifications.

And this is my build thread. Kind of

Steering tips or rocks forward and back and side to side on tilt column

I just took apart and reassembled and installed a tilt wheel column from another cj in my cj7. The steering wheel rocks or tips forward and back and in and out side to side as well. Anybody know what is causing this ? I just put both new upper bearings in there and new lower bearings. The support screws are tight. The cover screws are tight. I got the bearings from four wheel drive hardware. This is the kit I ordered

so it's for a tilt column

1985 Spring Edition

I found an 85 spring edition with low miles but it has sat in the Texas sun for the last twenty plus years. With that being said it needs a new paint job but the seats are in great shape.

I can't find a whole lot of info on these such as engines sizes, transmission type, or if it was just a dealer installed thing to sell CJ7's. Any info or sales brochures would be helpful. Thanks

Can't stop leak on new radiator hose.

I recently put new radiator hoses on my my Jeep. The top one keeps leaking at the thermostat housing neck. The antifreeze runs out of the hose almost as if the neck was not there. It seems to only leak in the mornings when it's cold. In the afternoon it does not leak. I thought my compression clamp was bad so I replaced it with type you tighten up with a nut driver or screw driver. Could my new hose be bad? I can't crank my clamp any tighter. My old one never leaked, I wanted to replace my hoses since I had to replace my radiator. Has this ever happened to anyone else? What would you recommend to fix this issue?

Jegs 2 chamber 4.0 video

Finally got a short video done of my 97 grand cherokee 4.0. The muffler is a jegs ($35) 2 chamber muffler and it exiting out the side by the rear tire. I will have another drive by and longer video as soon as i get a new memory card that will allow me to record longer.

What Kind Of Lift?

Alright I am at a hold up about what type of lift I should get. If i should just get the spacers, and then replace the shocks and struts. Or if i should go with the larger shocks. So what are your guys takes on which one would ride better, or if there is even a difference. I am only looking for a 2-3 inch lift as well.

Thanks

Can anyone identify this star case?

Hello, I recently took my jeep in for a problem with the center console shutting down. It's a 2014 Jeep grand Cherokee's. They performed an update to the software that I thought was already up-to-date. They said there were no TSB's but found star case #s1408000091 if anyone knows what that is that would be great. Can I expect the problem to be resolved?

Vari Lok

Well I'm back in the Jeep world. Had a TJ for over 10 years, sold it last year and now I just bought a 2000 WJ Limited. It has the 4.7L and looks like a Dana 30 up front and 35 in the rear. It has the quadra drive system (which I know nothing about) and I'm trying to figure out if it has limited slip or vari lok. How do I know if it has vari lok and if it does, is it still working at 124K? I know the trac loks were known to wear out after some time. Thanks for help, the Jeep Forum is awesome!

cabin light quirk

vendredi 30 janvier 2015

Greetings everyone,

2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited

The cabin lights have developed an odd quirk. When the jeep is running you can reach up and turn them on no problem. When you turn the ignition off they do not turn on like they should automatically and can not be pushed on either. The lights in the doors and floor do come on when the ignition is turned off as they are supposed to.

What are yalls thoughts on this? Anyone else have this problem? What did you do to fix it?

Thank you in advance

Dan

Anybody getting together tomorrow, jan 31

I'm in the Pasadena area, looking to do a bit of crawling tomorrow. Anyone have anything organized? Im up- but no lockers!

PSC bought out ?

What is your input on this? I know the owner announced he had cancer a little while back maybe that influenced the sale. Wonder if they will stick to their word about not moving production overseas.

ZJ 4.0L Engine

Selling my ZJ 4.0L. I pulled the motor at 140k running strong. It is out of a 1996 ZJ. I just replaced all the gaskets and seals including the head gasket and head bolts. I installed a complete Comp Cam kit; cam w/ bearings, springs, timing set, lifters. It has new Accel cap and rotor, coil, and wires. It also has a new alternator and waterpump. This was for a project that never came to be. Reasonable offers accepted.

Message me with further questions.

AMC 20 rear axle inner seal install

I finally got my axle back and had planned on getting it in and all done tomorrow. I happened to look at the new inner axle seals I had installed along time ago, and noticed they didn't look right. I thought they looked backwards. The rubber seal that I can see has the spring that keeps the seal tight to the shaft on the outside. I'm thinking its backwards, and the spring needs to be on the inside like all other seals I've put in. I didn't seal around the outer edges like Ludels book recommends, so I went ahead and pulled them anyway.

Its hard to see but the first pic is of it installed. You can see the rubber seal, and just barely see that round spring.

The second pic is of how it was in before I pulled it. The third pic is the back side that I had facing in.

dom tubing?

I am trying to find some info on the differences in dom tubing. I was able to pick up a tubing bender off of a guy today which included a 180 deg 1 5/8" die. I have found several different kinds of tubing, but the numbers don't mean a lot to me. I understand what dom is, but when would you use 1020 vs 1026 vs ....? I have searched and found some things through google, but need some practical advice. I am planning on eventually doing a cage and some other projects. Thank you in advance.

Oil pressure pegged after replacing valve cover gasket

GRRR... Did the valve cover on my 99 with 4.0L... No real issues until the test drive. The oil pressure is maxed to the right no matter what. Putting in neutral or revving engine does not change anything. I would suspect the sending unit except I just replaced it last month. At that time I was getting the usual low oil pressure at idle but revving the engine made the pressure jump. Any ideas on

what could have happened with the valve cover gasket replacement? I did a lot of visual to and there wasn't any leftover pieces of the CCV valves (which broke off) in the rocker arm area. I also did a 5-10 miles test drive and everything seemed normal

stock 2002 tj 2.5l: Average AX5 clutch replacement cost?

I posted a few days ago about the strange new sounds my tj was making and got zero response. I'm not home so i have no garage to work in and no substantial tools.

So i figured I'd go ahead and replace the flouds in the xfer and transmission to see if that would stop the the swish swish noise. Nope. After the fluid swap, the shifts are buttery smooth ( thank you all for the mt90 recommendation) but, swish swish continues.

I get back to "home" and i hear a cyclical tappy like sound. Figuring that all this fresh fluid would have eliminated all chatter elsewhere, it much be clutch/ bearing related. I press the clutch petal while in neutral, the noise goes away. Let it go, it comes back. Still in nuetral.

Something is up and I'd rather just get $#!7 done than play games. If i was home, i'd do it myself but...,

Do any of you have an estimate of how much a shop is gona try to run me for a clutch and pilot bearing replacement?

Weird brakes after water pump relacement

Hey guys so I replaced my water pump, and thermostat about a week ago, got rid of the squeals and leaks and the engine is definitely running cooler.

Upon the first test drive I noticed that my brakes stop. Smoothly until the last maybe 10% and then it is like I slammed on to them. This was not an issue before, and I am not driving differently.

At first I thought it was a fluke but it is persisting. I was thinking maybe I over/under tightened the belt, but it feels normal.

Any ideas?

Tube Fender Flares

jeudi 29 janvier 2015

I have searched with no luck....im in the process of building front and rear bumpers for my WJ...since i have the Rock sliders already on i have been thinking of making tube fender flares that tie into the bumpers to the sliders...seeing as how the body seems to be a magnet when out on the trail....has anyone on here done this already? im basically trying to run a 285/75/17 with only a 3inch lift...i intend on cutting the wheel wells and adding in the flares...but no one that i have found makes anything structural...im not trying to have it strong enough to lay it on its side and take no damage...but maybe rub a tree or an embankment with it not crinkeling the fender or quarter...ideas? pics if already been done?....thanks

Double Cardan driveshaft

I read in another thread here that there was no such thing as a double cardan driveshaft. They said that there can be a double cardan joint on a driveshaft but there is no such thing as a double cardan driveshaft.

About eight years ago I bought what I was told was a double cardan driveshaft for the rear. Did I get ripped off? Did I not by a double cardan driveshaft? Maybe I should contact who I bought it from and have them explain?

Lock cylinder will not turn. several methods attemped

So I am an apprentice technician and I recently helped my friend pick up a Grand Cherokee ZJ 1993 for 700$ it has 250,000 KM on it and was in relatively good shape except for the front driver side axle which had failed at the cv joint. I knew this would be an easy repair. changed that out and ended up with a good jeep. that is until the Canadian winter turned spring early on us. and the viscous coupler started to bind up at low speed turns.

Sooo our goal of fixing everything got squashed by needing one part that is 60% of the initial investment. But it is still a good get around, and once the weather warms up I thinks a tcase swap to something with 2wd would be the ultimate fix for that.

but now the ignition key will not turn, the steering wheel was locked so I thought we just needed to unlock the wheels. jacked the front of the vehicle up and attempted too free the wheel and jiggle the key. no dice.

Sprayed seafoam deep creep penetrating lubricant. no dice

Found online to tap the key in while turning the key. no dice. key got bent a little :(

now we have removed the key assembly. with a screwdriver I was able to unlock the steering wheel by turning where the tumbler got stuck. Since this is an inexpensive vehicle and my friend has no shame in a screwdriver start this is what we want to attempt. I am praying some other users of this forum have rigged up a setup and have any knowledge they could share with me in order to help my friend out. since I helped him purchase the vehicle i feel responsible for its bugs. It was CHEAP so its not a big deal about the drivetrain binding but he does need it to get to and from work.

I think you need to use two screwdrivers to turn the lower section and the upper section to crank the engine.. but there is also an electrical aspect and this is what I am stuck on. I will check diagrams through prodemand at work but still not exactly what is sure to start the jeep, keep it running and satisfy the security system

Mystery Axle Part ... 2005 Rubi D44

I'm working on a bunch of front axle mods and upon removing the front axle seals, this part came out along with the passenger side seal.

There was no equivalent part on the driver's side.

It just plopped down into the pumpkin along with the seal, so I'm not sure if it was originally on the inside or outside of the seal.

HELP Back Seat door will not open!

First I got the both front actuators in without a problem. And the rear ones went slick and smooth until the last one...

It will not open! HELP!

I installed new actuator on right rear door. Now it will not open. I had some "help" and I think the door was closed while I was testing the electrical connection. I don't know if I connected the outside handle rod but given the situation I would guess not. The inner door latch will not open it either, I am guessing that the G@# D#$@ child protection switch was either set on at factory or got switched on during install.

So here is the question. How can I open a rear door? I think I can lower the window. I could remove the back seat guess but I don't want to if some one has a cool trick.

Thanks.

Brakes applied lights act up 00Xj

Before the forum police get all bent out of shape, I did use the search and didn't find anything. So if this thread was already posted my apologies, and please direct me to the correct location.

I am in the market for some rock sliders and just wanted to get some input before driving down to take a look at them. I like to support made in USA products and if they are local(ish) that is a bigger + for me to support them.

Fit, Finish, Quality, Longevity, customer service? any and all feedback would be appreciated.

Help with fluids on my 86 CJ7.

I am replacing all fluids on my jeep. I already did the engine oil and transmission oil. Now I want to do the power steering, and front and rear axle and transfer case. And the brakes.

Rear is a Dana 44.

What fluids do they all need?

Thanks in advance.

Tire recommendation?

To start, I have already spent hours using the search and can't find an exact answer, close but not quite. I am new here and new to Jeeps so forgive me.

I want to go up in tire size on my daughters Jeep. Current setup. 2004 GCL AWD 4.7L, new Rancho RS 5000 all around, 2" Rusty's off road BB spacers, stock 235/65/17. I have a line on a set of BFG Mud Terrain KO 255/75/17 for cheap. Will this work for DD. Just eyeballing it with wheels turned at every degree it looks like these tires may work, just a little tight. Saw a lot of very similar setups in pics on here but I don't know all the lingo for Jeeps so Im just not sure.

Daughter doesn't wheel off road and drives like a grandma. I don't mind a LITTLE plastic trimming to make these fit so that turning and backing is no issue. Our driveway does have some incline(about 10-15 degrees).

If I can't make these work can I go with a 255/70/17 or do I really need to go with a 245/75(or65)? Or maybe get some Up Country springs to make those tires work?

Thanks in advance.

Anyone redone their woodgrain?

I'm trying to look for the best way to redo the woodgrain on the outside of my '84.

Just wondering if anyone has a different or better way of doing this, thanks guys

GM is getting prodded to build Jeep competitor

The target must be getting to be too much for some.

Why GM could revive a Hummer to battle the Jeep Wrangler

Quote:

The calendar may say 2015, but one of the most popular vehicles on the road remains a trucklet born in World War II. As the Jeep Wranger sets sales records in the United States and around the world, General Motors could finally field a true off-road truck under the GMC brand — if it can only make up its mind after more than a decade of eating Jeep dust.

According to The Wall Street Journal, executives from the GMC brand were asking dealers at a recent national conference whether adding a small off-roader to the lineup was a good idea. Last year, Jeep sold 234,579 Wranglers worldwide, with sales up 13 percent in the United States.

For car fans, this is deja vu all over again. Back when it was building Hummer into a sizable business at the turn of the century, GM laid plans for a Wrangler-killer that would have been called the Hummer H4. The car above was a concept version, dubbed the Hummer HX, unveiled at the 2008 Detroit auto show. Sometimes concept cars are little more than mockups; the HX had a full spec sheet, including a 302-hp V-6, removable roof panels and 24 inches of ground clearance. The H4 would have been built off a modified version of GM's mid-size truck chassis, but the economic collapse and GM's bankruptcy sank the H4, the entire Hummer brand and the executives who wanted to kick Jeep in the teeth.

Only now, as gas prices ease and GM has returned to full financial health, does the company have the resources to consider a niche truck like a Wranger fighter. GM showed off a hint of its off-road thinking with the Chevy Colorado ZR2 concept at the Los Angeles auto show last year, yet if it approved a full-bore new GMC product today, GM would need at least three years to build it.

Why such reluctance to give buyers what they want? In carbuilding, momentum means everything, and being popular only makes it harder for a newcomer. The U.S. sales charts would say every company should build a full-size pickup, but if you're not Ford or GM or Chrysler, doing so requires spending at least $1 billion for a vehicle that — no matter how smart you are — will take years to win acceptance, can't be sold elsewhere and will likely never make back the investment. It's not just that Jeep sells a lot of Wranglers; it's that those buyers want a Jeep again and again and again, despite what some magazine might say.

There's another hurdle on the government side: No vehicle has quite the fuel economy challenges that a Jeep Wrangler does. U.S. rules set fuel economy targets based on a vehicle's footprint (technically, its wheelbase multiplied by its track width.) Small footprints get higher targets, and big footprints get lower ones. Cars and trucks do get separate scales, but there's no adjustment for what's setting inside that footprint. All that hurts a vehicle like the Jeep Wrangler most; it's small by truck standards, but hefty due to its off-road chassis and bits like the solid rear axle.

Jeep executives have said that the next-generation Wrangler could use aluminum parts and small turbo engines to meet its targets, but that might not be enough. Fiat Chrysler chief Sergio Marchionne said earlier this month the company had yet to decide where to build the next-generation Wrangler due in 2017; switching to a unibody frame and aluminum body could mean moving the Wrangler line out of the Toledo plant, a prospect that has upset workers there even though Chrysler has vowed no layoffs.

In other words, the next Wrangler will look much more like other SUVs under the skin and less like the WWII throwback its fans demand today. (Building the folding windshield out of a unibody frame is going to be worthy of an SAE paper or two.) When the Wrangler changes that dramatically, it will be the first time in ages that GM or another competitor could steal some momentum — if they can only get in gear.

Fuel Guage

Would the sending unit be the likely culprit and of so, how difficult is it to install?

Thanks!

how much for amc 360?

Hello haven't been on here for a while and trying to keep going on my cj. I have a good running 304 but am not impressed with the lack of power. I have found a 360 that has been bored .30 thousands over, cleaned, and had the heads done and valves ground by a local engine machine shop. This all sounds good BUT, the owner and his buddy started assembly themselves. I have no idea of their level of expertise and have the following questions.

#1 the engine comes with a aluminum intake and a holley truck avenger, How much could it be worth like this?

#2 I would assume that if purchased I should have it torn down, re-checked and the rebuild done by a mechanic?

Any feedback would be appreciated especially by those members who do this stuff in their sleep. Thanks

8th Gear: When, or Why Not? Parameters?

I notice that in automatic shift mode on interstates, my 2015 JGC Overland likes to cruise in 7th gear instead of getting into 8th gear. IIRC, on flat ground it would get into 8th, but on non-level (but not very steep) interstates (I-81 and I-380 in PA) it liked to stay in 7th while cruising (not passing, not accelerating, not using cruise control. No cargo, no passengers). Paddle shifting to 8th didn't seem to be too much for the engine (and improved the instant mpg by about 1 mph).

Does anyone know what the shift parameters are for automatic shifting into 8th gear? Is this normal behavior?

Another T176/Dana 300 rebuild.

So I've got an 85 CJ-7 with a chevy 350, Iron Duke BH and the said T176/Dana 300 combo.

I pulled the trans/trans case due to it leaking out the front input/bearing retainer. I've got the rebuild kit for the t176 and reseal kit for the D300. Both components shifted fine, neither one popped out of any gear, however, 1st-3rd gear are kinda noisy. Does anybody have the tech data for the T176/d300 rebuild? or where I can get it?

Things I'm going to address other then the t176/d300.

*new iron duke slave cylinder assembly with corresponding hose/line.

* new pilot and throw out bearing

* new clutch fork assembly and boot

Possibly a HD clutch assembly (I need a 10.5" clutch with pressure plate... damn Iron duke conversion).

Possibly a twin stick conversion

Please advise of any tips or tricks! I need all the help I can get.

Looking to lease a 2015 GC Overland

mardi 27 janvier 2015

So I'm extremely interested in leasing a new grand Cherokee Overland. I went to the dealer and drove it and really like the way it looks and drives. I am extremely hesitant on making a move on it do to the amount of issues I have read about on various websites about transmission and electrical problems. If anyone here has a 2015 and could give me some insight as to whether or not they're having these issues as well I would really appreciate it!

Steering suggestion- 77cj7 with scout axle

I have a 77 cj7 with scout international front axle. Previous owner put a chevy truck rack and pinion steering setup in, but the steering radius, especially to the left, is poor. I've heard the rack and pinion from older mustangs can work, but definitely open to suggestions and advice. Apologies if this info is out there on the forum, but the search tool kept giving me an error. Btw, runnin 36" mud tires, so beefy is better.

Blinkers and Hazards not working... advise?

I am posting this for my fathers '00 TJ... Out of nowhere none of his blinkers or hazards are working. I checked the fuse under the glove box and it was good... figured the flasher relay was shot so ordered a new one from AutoZone, but that didnt fix it (unless they sold me a bad flasher - it was prev opened box)

Is there anyway to check the flasher relays with a multi-meter?

Only other thing I can think is changing the actual blinker switch/rod...

Am I missing anything??

Thanks in advance!

I was rear ended in Corpus Christi on Mustang Island last week and the jeep may be toast. Damage to sheet metal, rear springs, and maybe frame. The trailer I was hauling took the brunt of the blow, but the outriggers holding the tub on the left side are bent and the tub is crushed in and floor buckled. Can anyone suggest some good places to get things looked over/fixed in Corpus Christi?

Forman, the XJ years

Just documenting the journey from stock craigslist XJ, to everything I could want it to be, on my broke college kid budget.

Background: picked this XJ off of craigslist for $3600 (little pricier around winter in my area.) It was clean, inside and out, with a couple rust bubbles under the paint on the lower driver side door, and rocker. My goal with this project is to turn it into a clean DD, with some off-roading capabilities.

Sorry for crappy CL screenshots, dont have many pick of bone stock jeep.

Frame had recently been cleaned up, and coated. Seller had invoice from the shop.

Messin' around

What's been accomplished so far:

  • Rebuilt rear wiper motor, so it functions now.

  • replaced front speakers with walmart pioneers

  • mounted a Surco 60"x45" roof rack with homemade roofrack mounts

  • 2 6" 36W LED light bars, mounted to roof rack

Pics:

The lights are wired into a relay, and switched with a stock fog light switch

I've wired in a quick disconnect into the lights since this pic was taken

I'll post a couple more pics from the building of the mounts in a follow up post

Plans:

Suspension is completely shot soooooo....

Jeep refuses to recognize key, will not start. Intermittent. TIPM recall related?

Jeep refuses to recognize key, will not start. Intermittent. TIPM recall related?

Tonight, car wouldnt remote start or unlock.

Had to unlock manually, the alarm went off.

Wouldnt start with button.

Removed button, tried to start manually, told me key was defective.

Tried it 4-5 times in 2-3 minutes of the alarm not stopping, and then it started. Now it's fine.

The battery is a brand new energizer just a few months old.

Can this be related to the TIPM recall? Also having some issues with the suspension refusing to raise or lower on command intermittently.

Thanks

Squeaks and rattles

Hey fellow Jeepers,

I have a 1978 CJ7 and it seems like there are little squeaks and rattles inside the cab while driving down the road. Anyone else have these anonymous squeaks and rattles?

Spindle nuts torque?

Of the two manuals I have access to, neither list the torque spec for the 6 nuts that hold the front spindle on.

The books tell how to replace the needle bearings. But no reassembly details.

Baffling.

Special order Jeep is in "JS" Status (shipped to storage)

Called Jeep again today to check on the status of my WK2 special order from November 17 (Overland, 4X4, Ecodiesel, Off Road Adventure II, Advanced Technology, Granite Crystal) and it has been built! Yay!

The bad news it's in JS status, which mean it has been sent to storage and will have a QA/QC inspection there. Ship date has slipped from 1-27 to 2-10.

Anyone have any information on exactly what JS status means?

2000 TJ, 3.5" lift driveshaft vibration

Can anyone share a link on a good diagram on adjusting my driveshaft angle to remove vibration?

I have a 3.5" rubicon express lift, 1" drop transfer case, factory driveshaft (no SYE kit now...but will have someday). I have new adjustable upper rear control arms to install, but for now I have installed some cam bolts in the factory upper rear control arms to help with pinion angle.

Honestly I've been driving like this for 12 years and 70K miles. :( Its a minor vibration under acceleration. I have even had the SYE kit and the upper adjustable control arms for the past 10 years... I just haven't installed due to money, or the fact that I want to get rid of the Dana 35, etc... I've been noticing some "noise" that sounds like bearings lately. I suspect its in the transfer case, because it's quiet under load, doesn't change with shifting to different gears, and from every indication it doesn't appear the rear end. I've always had a lot of slack in the transfer case chain.

My vibration is under acceleration and actually with 4 people riding in the jeep it goes away. I've trying to figure out if I install my control arms, which way do I need to pitch the pinion angle to help with vibration. the cam bolts helped when we first did it, but weren't quite enough. I like seeing pictures and I have a angle finder to help.

thanks,

Dave

What is a 42RLE ?

I bought a Transmission that I thought might work for my 04 GC 4x4 but when I got it home I saw all the differences. The bell housing is wayyyyy different.

I looked up the id.# and came up with a 42rle ?????

It came out of a 05 Dodge Dakota AWD. I would like to get some info on it so maybe then I can list it in the right place. Did they ever use in JEEPS at all??

I need a 42re is anybody wants to swap. Not unless ya have a Dodge I would assume !! Ha

I wonder if any of the "Hard Parts" would interchange? My 42re has a front clutch pack and pump that needs replaced. If I would have been thinking I would have just bought those parts on E-Bay and repaired my own ! Now I have a 42re that needs parts and a complete 42rle that does not work in my Jeep ! :(:(:(:(

Connecting High Amp Draw Cables

Fixing to start rewiring my winch and starter cables to the battery. My plan was to crimp both the winch and starter cables into one battery terminal lug. Solder and crimp them and use adhesive shrink wrap like is detailed in Jeep Hammer's post on cables.

My question really was, what size terminal lugs do I need to get to crimp 2 x 1/0 cables? Will the next size up (2/0) work to crimp 2 cables in, or do I need a 3/0 terminal? I'm also planning on putting a 10 or 8 awg cable on both the positive and negative lugs to tie into terminal blocks on my firewall for various power needs, so that may necessitate moving up to 3/0.

I plan to put a relay in for the winch (don't have one right now), so what's a good one to use? Ideally I'd get an identical starter and winch relay for redundancy - if the starter relay fails I can just hook up the winch relay to get out of a jam.

If I'm not able to tie 2 cables into one terminal lug, option B would be to run one cable to the starter relay, then run the winch cable off that same starter lug, essentially using the starter relay as a terminal box. Then run the winch cable to the other relay. Is this feasible, or am I just asking for trouble? In this scenario I'd still need to tie both grounds into one terminal, unless there's another way. Any thoughts?

HP30 or Waggy 44 or...

So in light of recent conversations locally in wondering if the Waggy 44 would be the best option over the HP30.

LJ Transmission and steering upgrade advice needed

Hi all,

Need some advice on 05 LJ rubicon auto transmission. 70k miles running 35" tires. 4.10 gears for now (I know it needs 4.88s but I actually like it with the 4.10s and 4-1 transfer...it's about perfect in 4 low) and in 3rd (od off) it's great on the highway so not motivated to change them as they work for me.

Tranny keeps popping up p700 code..3x now. Mechanic stated it may have been running hot (I agree) and went in limp mode. Cleared it and was fine for a while. Then it happened again under hard acel. From a stop light. When it happens it stays in 2nd only and you have to key off...on to get it to use other gears. Amsoil synthetic fluid only changed reg. Deep pan (mopar) I feel it could be slipping a bit but only when changing gears and could be imagining it as I drive it pretty easy overall. mechanic also stated shift servo could be bad.

So that's the background. My main question is: is there a company that offers a built drop in tranny I can buy. I find many for 4l60e's. Nothing for this despite countless searches. And if so is this a worthwhile option? Or would I be better either rebuilding this tranny or just adding a cooler and a new shift servo. And what is the best cooler.

We wheel throughout new England in the trees rocks and hills and go to moab ut every now and then, so we need reliability. We wheel hard, but carefully and don't skip obstacles but wheel easy if that makes sense...we let the jeep do the work. I baby her but do all the trails and obstacles. I am tempted to go to 37s with the Dana 44s and superior axles, sleeved, gusseted, in the future. But the consensus seems to be that will push it and is a can of worms so may stick with 35s.

Sorry for all the info, but felt it relevant.

Steering: currently just zj setup. While we've had no issues I'd something better. It is puny compared to jk. I like the way jk goes to the knuckle from the pitman. Is there a bolt on kit for the tj like that....that just has a tie rod going from knuckle to knuckle? Besides the skyjacker aluminum....I want steel.

Seems way stronger knuckle to knuckle. I've seen the currie correct link and I'm not sure it's the best option. I know it's going to sound weird but I also hate how the whole steering isn't level to the axle plane with that type of set up. Just aesthetically.

Thanks all, much appreciated, John Everything is a can of worms! My alter ego is yelling ls3 and 4l60e! If I need a teanny I'm half way there. Need to hit the lotto! then I'll need better axles. Lol. Truthfully she's fine the way she is, I just want to upgrade everything as much as I can when stuff wears out or breaks.

Adding 1 inch spacers to a 2.5 lift ?

Hello everyone: I have a 2010 2 doors Jeep wrangler: I have installed a Teraflex 2.5 Coil Springs lift with JKS front track bar. Also, plan to add & install Teraflex 1" Front and Rear Spacers. My question is, do I have to add additional components to achieve 1 more inch of lift or do you think I could do it ?, thank you.

Forgot to mention, Also plan to add Teraflex Front Lower FlexArms, (Only the Front Lower FlexArms). Again, thank you.http://ift.tt/1CUcmLu

rear track bar relocation

i was cycling the rear suspension yesterday as i wanted to get some baseline numbers and see where my major limitations are. well i noticed the rear track bar is a major issue with full bump and ds stuff. i'm assuming this is due to the track bar relocation bracket.

my thought is to remove the OME bracket that i have been using, mount the axle side in the OEM location, grind off the OEM track bar mount on the frame, then weld it back on with some additional metal to get the angles just right for my lift and TT requirements.

I would relocate my upper spring perches and probably outboard the shocks at the same time

I dont want to mod the axle as I may sell it in the future, and it will be much easier to sell as a bolt in axle. running a genright comp gas tank, so no worry about clearance there. 1" deep trans skid, 2" rear springs, lopro trans mount, and 1.5" MML. Savvy aluminum arms and CV driveshaft. TB is rubbing gas line on the driver side and crossmember in the middle with bumpstops removed

thoughts?

Winch rope

I just picked up a new winch rope and was noticing that the rope has probably a good 8" of rope after the eyelet that mounts to the drum. What is the ideal way to deal with this extra rope....simply cut it and melt the ends or secure it to the drum under the coils on the drum?

Seafoam?

Hey guys. I have a 93 Yj i6HO. Has 123,xxx miles on it and I was wanting to seafoam it. I have done this on other cars but not one that has this many miles and was wondering if it's worth it or if it could have some bad side effects. Let's hear your input! Thanks guys.

Apartment Garage Mechanic - HELP!! - Not Starting

samedi 24 janvier 2015

Thanks for checking post...

It's been awhile since I've been on here, but I do check my updates.

Ok, here's the situation:

(FYI, but I've learned a ton in the last two years about my Jeep, keep that in mind, intermediate mechanic now.)

Two years ago I had to jumpstart my Jeep a few times during the winter.

I found out that my battery was borderline on the CCA required for the temperatures here (Upstate NY).

So, being that I owned it for 6 years prior, I decided to buy a Red Top Ultima Battery, 1000CC and 850CCA, a Mean Green Alternator, and a Mean Green Starter.

No issues whatsoever for two years electrically.

Well, then my #5 Rod broke, so I then had my engine rebuilt at the dealer.

It wasn't the same after the rebuild, but still in very good condition and overall response in all aspects.

Just recently my Jeep is now not starting.

(Less than 1YR Since Engine Rebuild - 3 YR Warranty on Engine Only)

I have 17 years experience with electronics, so this next section I am certain about.

I checked the voltage on my battery: ~12.2

Originally 12.6

I checked the voltage going to my starter: ~12.2

Performed a parasiditic amp draw on my battery: ~0.2 mA or 0.0002 A

I have cut the old factory battery connectors off and installed new terminal post connections, no corrosion and can be securely fastened to the battery.

I removed the starter to inspect the flywheel teeth and all teeth are good.

I disassembled starter solenoid to inspect.

All internal wiring, magnets, internal contacts, bindings, and spline going to starter are good.

Rotated solenoid manually to make sure starter plunger rotates accordingly.

Pulled starter spline in and out to make sure the plunger is not bound or snagging.

Using a Dremel I polished all connections and posts.

I have checked ALL fuses, behind the glove box and in the PDC.

(Minus two AirBag Fuses)

I have rotated all relays into the Horn slot and tested each one using the Horn.

I have turned on all accessories, lights, wipers, fog lights, stereo, flashers, high beams, turned on interior light, turned on A/C and turned key off and on (x10 atleast).

This was to test the ignition circuit in worst case scenario and voltage draw on battery.

~11.9 in this state - remember - engine not on so no alternator

I then unhooked heater, blower, stereo to rule out any possible shorts coming from those circuits.

(Easy at that point and no harm.)

I then checked voltage going to starter from battery just in case:

12.2V at Starter and 12.2V from Neg. post to Pos. post on battery

I tested the resistance to the starter and it is 0.78ohms (0.71 to 0.88 is spec).

So, it leaves me to believe its the solenoid on the starter, but I'm having a real hard time believing that because it's only been about a year since the new install of the Mean Green Starter, which cost me a pretty penny, but I wanted the best. :)

If anyone has ANY ideas I haven't mentioned or weird stuff they have run into, PLEASE post!

I swear you'll have no judgment by me no matter how stupid it might sound to others.

(I also removed the Clutch Relay during testing to make sure the circuit wasn't shorted and inhibiting the starter relay from switching states. I did my first round of troubleshooting with it in, and still same results. It's back in now.)

Short of smacking the solenoid with a sledgehammer, not sure what else to do and if I go and buy another starter and it doesn't work I'm gonna lose my ****!

:cheers2:

P0303 Misfire code

I have a 2001 XJ Cherokee that has a mysterious p0303 code. When this code sets my CEL will flash and I lose power due to this cylinder 3 misfire. I also have a loud tapping on cold start up and one after My oil pressure reaches 40psi... The strange thing about this is that when this happens all I have to do is kill the engine for like 2 mins and it starts back up no problem..No misfire at all. This happens about once month. I know it probably needs lifters. Im just wondering if its collapsing at times on cylinder 3 and causing this issue?

Anyone know if this problem?

Charcoal Canister Refurb

Decided to refurbish the charcoal canister today. I've been having some starting issues and it was suggested that this might be part of the problem. Plus I've had a raw gas odor.

Part of the problem was not all the hoses were hooked up. And you may notice one of the nipples was broken off (goes to dist. vac.)

Filter on the bottom was pretty much clogged with mud.

Used a small hacksaw to cut the bottom off the canister. Would have used a dremel, but I don't have access to all my tools right now.

And here is all the charcoal.

The green foam filter goes between the charcoal and the grill (the grill is the bottom of the canister).

Starting issues

I'm having problems getting my 95 wrangler 4.0 started. Never have any any electrical issues before, but I recently had someone else working on my vehicle, and in there care the battery died. The hooked up the battery charger to get it started and told me that smoke came out of the ecu. This is all their story not mine. Anyways, I'm at a loss at why it wont start. This is what I know, battery, starter, alternator are all in good shape. Jeep cranks perfectly, but will not start, even on ether. I'm not getting any spark, but I know that the coil is good. Im only getting ten volts to one lead to the coil. Has brand new crank position sensor, but I am not getting any voltage to it. Check engine light will not go off, and It wont give me the code when I turn the key three times. Upshift light is also staying on. What should be my next step, should I plan on replacing computer.

1999 jeep cherokee 2006 engine swap?

This is the first Jeep for me. I have a lot of experience with other engines but not with the 4 liter jeep. That said , I am going to replace a 1999 jeep Cherokee Sport's engine with a 4 liter long block out of a 2006 Jeep Wrangler.

I would like to use all of the 1999's external parts (intake, exhaust etc)What problems will I run into if any?

Thank for your help:)

2" suspension lift, stock tires?

I found this lift from roughcountry for my 2006 grand cherokee for only $150. Will this lift look silly with my stock tires? Will i have to grab some new ones? is there anything else I need to get if i purchase this lift?

New tire suggestions

30k mile 258 w/ Holley carb value?

I'm in the middle of a LS V8 swap and my 258 is out. I bought it as a rebuilt long block in 1997. It has a Holley 2 barrel, other than that it's stock with 30k miles and runs perfect. Never driven in the winter so it's clean. It's complete with alternator, power steering pump, distributor, intake/exhaust manifolds, and center force clutch 5k miles ago. It's a good motor and I would call it a waist to leave it in a corner in my shop. Before I pulled the motor I took a video of the engine running and driving, oil pressure, water temp etc. Can anyone give me an idea as to what it might be worth to sell? Thanks.

Aux led wont shut off

I installed a couple of cube leds about 6 mos ago to replace my fogs that I lost when I built my new bumper. I just had it shipped to guam from the uk, and I find that my pos connections were unhooked. When I connected them, one of my leds is constantly on, although not at full power, and flickering occasionally. The new leds are wired to the battery (as is my winch), both pos and neg connections. I inspected the switches, they are perfectly clean and connected. I cant see anything wrong with the fuses, nor the relays. I will add that the relays are somewhat close to the engine, about 5 or 6 inches, if that helps (heat damage?). I am out of ideas, though.

Any suggestions? A search only showed stock fog issues. It doesnt help that I know nothing about wiring. Thanks in advance!

painting flares to match the body

I posted this in the paint and body forum but only got 2 views. Thought I'd try it here.

I've done a search but found nothing conclusive. My situation is that I've got a 99 Sport, desert sand in color. I want to paint the flares to match the body, like a Sahara. Is a body shop gonna be able to match paint that's 16 years old? How bout paint stores fixing you up some spray paint? Won't that look like crap? Just curious before I spend $300 to get this done. I personally don't like the fact that my flares are black and my top is tan. Just doesn't look good to me.

Blower motor problem help!

I have a 08 wrangler blower motor keeps turning off but when I put my hand to the vent its hot. So I replaced the blower motor and that wasn't the problem someone suggested it was maybe a relay but I camt seem to find a relay that's for the heat, where would it be located? I was going to order the resistor see if maybe be the problem any help would be apprciated thankss

front windows dont work

I have a 96 zj. my front driver and passenger windows do not work but both my rear windows do. I was thinking it was the window motors but would like to see what else could be the problem before I start to go buy parts only to find that its not the problem. I don't have the money to be doing trial and error. thank you.

Motorcraft 2100 vs. Holley 350 mounting base

Hey guys,

I'm an ex-TJ'er that has a Toyota Pickup w/ the carb'ed 22R now, and I need a new carb.

All the Toyota folk seem to prefer Webbers, but I'm exploring all options, and the Motorcraft 2100 seems to be more popular in the Jeep crowd, so it's got me intrigued, especially when I saw articles about it in an offroad mag.

I have what may seem like a dumb question: Does the Motorcraft 2100 share the same footprint as a Holley 350 (Holley 2 barrel)?

I'm looking for options as to how to adapt the Motorcraft 2100 to my engine, and there is a Holley 350 adapter available to purchase. I've seen references that make me think they have the same footprint, but I can't find a definitive answer.

I can't ask over on the Toyota forums, they'll crucify me for not going with a Weber. So I defer to you guys, for any help you can give me.

Thanks!

?Chas05TJ?

It is still pretty much stock and how I bought it. I am working on my build plan now.

Quadralift not activating when I press the buttons

Lately my QL has been doing another weird thing.

When I press the lift or lower buttons, sometimes, the leds on the buttons will flash, but the yellow arrow doesnt display on the evic and nothing happens. If I go from 3 leds, to 2, to 1, then it will display "normal ride height" on the evic when I ask for normal, and it's at normal, but it will not raise or lower. It's just telling me it's already there.

And then, If I switch from drive to park, to drive, move a little, try again, then sometimes it works, sometimes I have to move and try again.

Any idea what it might be ? It's very intermittent so far so I'm not really willing to go to the dealer if they cannot diagnose it.

I basically need any info or recommendations as to how to get into the door panel area without being able to open the door. The linkage on the handles have broke and I can't open from inside or out.

OEM Carb, trash?

jeudi 22 janvier 2015

I have my OEM carb that was working perfectly when I removed it to upgrade to the 38/38 Weber.

Came off of 88 4.2L.

Does anyone want this or should I just scrap it?

Compressor sounding noise from under hood - intermittent.

Our 2014 GC Overland makes a periodic noise that sounds like a compressor running. Sometimes for a couple of seconds, sometimes up to 10 seconds. Initially we thought it was part of the Quadralift system but Jeep has checked that out twice and everything checks out perfectly.

We have been paying attention to when it happens and it seems to happen most often when climbing a hill and maybe more often when in cruise control. I'm getting the impression that it seems to occur when engine vacuum is likely lowered.

Does anybody have any idea what this compressor sounding noise might be if it is not related to the Quadralift system?

Dial Indicator with Magnetic Base

Anybody have a recommendation for a good magnetic base dial indicator?

Audio Advertisements

I really don't like that the banner advertisements on the main page have audio. It's something that makes the website much less enjoyable.

Jeep TJ Fender separation

Hey guys,

I'm working on a friends 97 TJ SE. The PO got in an accident and replaced the passenger fender and hood. When he painted them (or had them painted) they used the wrong color red. Now I'm trying to remove just the outer fender to paint it (I don't want to remove all of the inner fender stuff). Is separating the outer from the inner feasible or even a smart thing to do? Or am I causing myself more work and future problems? From my understanding there are 9 bolts and a few spot welds from the factory.

Any help would be appreciated.

2004 WJ electrical/fuel issue

Good Morning. I'd be driving along, minding my own business, normal op temp, when all of a sudden, I'd lose power. Felt like flooded/too much gas i.e. sluggish, unable to correct. The check engine light would flash, and the loss of power would force me to pull over quickly. However, I could restart the engine with no problem, and the sluggishness would disappear. But 20 miles down the road, out of the blue, I'd have the same shutdown problem. I noticed that after restarting the engine, and driving away, I could not accelerate quickly, or it would bog down and force me to stop again. But if I slowly got up to highway speed, the engine would run fine, for 20 or so miles, and then the whole shutdown cycle would startover again with no warning. I did a diagnostic on it, and got PO300, PO301, PO302, ect. error codes. All pointed to a misfire in the cylinders, and advised checking spark plugs for fouling, SP wires (Mine has a coil pack). Also mentioned a faulty o2 sensor, and TB position sensor. The spark plugs have only 10,000 miles on them, and I gapped them myself at .035. They checked out fine. I installed a new TB Position sensor, and the left and right upstream o2 sensors. While down there, I noticed that the wiring from the coolant temp sensor and the air intake sensor was fused together or not insulated. I cleaned them up and and insulated them temporarily, until I replace all the wiring tomorrow. The thing ran great for 50 miles, then bam! Same problem again. Also, the vacuum hoses all appear to be fine although I didn't give them a formal inspection. I just made sure they were all on, with no visable damage. I've got 170k mi on it, so I don't mind changing out a lot of this hardware, as I kind of view it as somewhat of a preventive maintenance task, but I'm starting to feel like this is all just a hunt for bad wires. Should I check the fuel pump and filter also? New fuel injectors/rack/wiring? Your advise on this matter is appreciated.

Check Engine Light - 4th Time

I recently moved to Nashville from Los Angeles, and drove my Cherokee cross country. Drove great the entire way and had 7000 miles when I got here. In the 2 months since I moved here, my check engine light has gone on 4 times.

Each time I've brought it in, it's the same code; Evap Leak. The first few times, they tested everything out and everything checked out ok, so they reset the sensor. The last time, they found an issue with the emissions sensor and replaced the entire thing. They drove it for a few days and gave it back to me saying it was finally fixed. A week later, it came on again. Took it back, and it's the same code.

Anyway, I have a case opened with Chrysler, so hopefully it will be resolved in one way or another. Just curious if anyone here has experience this with their Cherokee. I did a search and found some complaints about this on other Jeep sites, but not here.

Any input would be appreciated.
