Okay guys, so last week I had a run in with law enforcement about trespassing while four wheeling. I was on private property where many locals go four wheeling, horseback riding, mountain biking, and hiking. At first, they tried to lie and tell me I was on California State Park property. Knowing better, I told them the fence line for state park property was down the way about 100 yards and that I was on private property. They then told me I was wrong (which according to legal county property lines I am not), but that I was trespassing either way and told me I had to leave the premises after picking up all the trash in the area, and that I was to never come back "in my vehicle" or be faced with a ticket. Then they said I was allowed to ride my bike or walk on the property, just not allowed in a vehicle. After review of CA Penal Code 602, my entry into the property is not legally considered trespassing based on multiple reasons and they cannot ask me to leave, especially if it is open for public use.
SO.... I plan on carrying a printout of the written law with me, therefore they cannot ruin a perfectly innocent time of slow non-damaging trail riding and crawling in the WJ. My only fear, is that they will not be fans of being proven wrong, and try and ticket me for vehicle infractions on my way out. Therefore, I am trying to make sure they have NO reason to hand me a ticket. And thats where I need some help:
1. My tires do stickout past the fender lines and I dont have flares or mud flaps. CA vehicle code 27600 states:
My question is can I just put on mudflaps that protrude the same amount of the tire? I ask this because of:
it does say "or" and not "and", which makes it seem like mud flaps are adequate enough. But it fairly vague, so what our your opinions?
2. Vehicle code 27150 states you must have a muffler, so what do you guys recommend for a low cost? I am a student and income is tight, so keeping up with maintenance and affording accessories on the WJ can be tricky.
3. VC 24411 states off road lighting must be covered with an opaque hood or cover when on road. Does anyone make covers for LED light bars yet?
4. I keep having problems with my taillights blowing bulbs and shorting out. One brake light is dimmer than the other, and as of last week, the running lights stopped working. This means no taillights at night unless braking. Very unsafe for myself and other drivers, so does anyone have any experience with taillight problems that can lead me in the right direction?
Any help is appreciated
