Greetings and Questions

Hey folks!

I'm Dave. I drove a 2000 TJ/Wranger for 12 years. I sold it last year and regretted it instantly. The silver lining is that I'm adopting my fathers 2001 4.7 WJ in the spring. I've always loved the vehicle - steel blue with taupe interior. I got in trouble in high school for taking it for a joy ride.

The Jeep has 314,000 KM (195,000 miles). It has the usual issues and I've been lurking here reading up on the solutions.

1. No power steering at idle or not moving, but kicks in at higher rpm/moving - so it looks like I'll be changing the pump. I've located the parts and "how to" videos.

2. all the lift struts are toast - easy enough!

3. A/C is toast - my guess is the compressor has a leak. My father was quoted $700 for the repair, but I'll have to investigate.

4. All the nice plastic "chrome" emblems have lost their plating. I read up on replacements and someone recommended this kit. Pretty cheap - how do they hold up long term?

5. The seat heaters are toast. I remember they didnt last long right from the stealership, less than a year. They were replaced under the "bumper to bumper" warranty at that point, but I hear there is a recall - I'll call the stealership with the VIN and see if I'm eligible. The stealership it was originally bought from is long gone though AND it's changing provinces (my dad is in Ontario, I'm in BC).

6. The headlights fogged over, but when i was home last i buffed the fog out successfully with sand paper and paint polish. They look new again.

7. Brake shutter - I've read this is a calliper issue? I'll have to address this immediately as BC requires safety inspections for vehicles brought into the province.

8. Seat leather - the drivers side bottom has developed a tear. I'd like to replace it with a factory leather seat bottom. Are these available? I hate seat covers.

9. Steering wheel - it looks like a burned hot dog. The leather is toast - are OEM wheels available or am i looking at a recover?

10. Should I be concerned with the timing chain? We had a 1994 Jeep Laredo 4.0 with equal mileage that blew the chain (or belt).

Other than these issues it runs beautifully. Looking forward to being part of the community.
