Looking for advice on which model of CJ to choose (or if they will even work) to tight trail riding...
A friend of ours is thinking of getting a CJ to replace his CanAm Commander 1000X. Mainly because the Jeep is street legal, he's tired of replacing drive belts on the Commander (apparently the CanAms have an issue with overheating their drive belts), and of course the fact the CanAm Rotax engine probably only has a life expectancy of 10k miles and his already has 6.5k on it.
He had the idea of using a CJ that would fit on the trails around here but most of the trails are sized for Side-by-Sides such as the Commander (one of the larger models), Maverick, Wildcat, and of course the most popular are the Polaris RZR, Polaris Ranger, etc.
So we know some of the older CJ's do have narrower tracks and not much more length than some of these machines, but which would be the best for what he wants. Clearly not a CJ7 or Scrambler, both are a bit too long and he'd have to do too many 3-point turns.
I don't know the size of his Commander but I have a RZR XP900 myself which is one of the more popular and powerful SxS at 88.5HP with a top speed around 80 mph, and my book says that mine weighs 1190lbs dry without any accessories, is 108.4 inches overall length, has a wheel base of 81.4 inches, 64.1 inches wide (outside of rear tire to outside of opposite which is the widest point on the machine), and is 73 inches high (top of the roll cage), and has 14 inches of travel on the suspension with 13.5 inches of ground clearance. I know his Commander is just a little longer (maybe 8 inches) with about 4 inches of extra wheel base, but is actually 2 inches narrower.
So he's looking for a CJ that would fit on the same kind of trail that a machine like that fits on.
Would a CJ5 be an option or does he need to go even further back like a CJ3b? Also, out of curiosity, did the CJ5 also go with a wider track axle in the early 1980s the same as the CJ7's and if so how much wider is that going to make one of the latter CJ5's compared to an earlier model, or more to the point can you tell the difference on tight trails?
If you want to get an idea of the kinds of trails we ride to help answer the question some of the videos from our Ranch might help;
