Last time I went camping with my trailer I ended up stuck on a steep incline of loose rocks & gravel terrain. Normally this hill is no problem for my LJ, but with the trailer acting as an boat anchor I just spun all 4 tires.
I tried to winch out, but at high elevation with no trees to winch off my options were limited. I hooked on to the nearest stump using a 30 ft strap as an extension + fully unrolled winch line, but just ended up ripping the stump out of the ground.
I've been looking at a land anchor for the winch, but the ground is often so rocky and hard I'm afraid it won't be very effective. For example, it's often hard to drive steel tent stakes in the ground...we've got a few inches of soil, then it's a granite rock face.
As an alternative, I've been considering getting a set of traction aid ramp/devices. I think I could have used 4 of these ramps to just crawl my way up the loose mountain, "Egyptian" style, if you will.
Looking at Maxtrax and TRED4x4 1100 models. Not considering Smittybilt due to finding many reports of broken units. Leaning toward the TRED4x4 since they interlock without extra parts and have a lifetime warranty.
Anyone using TRED4x4 or Maxtrax ??
