Dana 300 rebuild wrong/ missing parts in kit and questions

vendredi 10 octobre 2014

I feel like I'm jumping all over the place on different projects, but I'm running into problems with each job I start. Today I had planned on rebuilding my Dana 300 with the Crown Master Rebuild Kit.

My first issue I ran into was the shims that go on the input shaft before you install the input shaft bearing. I looked through all of my old parts and pics of the teardown, and didn't find any shims that were big enough to fit the input shaft. So I won't know if I need to find some until I fix the next issue which is the input shaft snap ring. Mine broke when I was taking the sub-unit apart, and two trips to Ace and I still didn't have the right one. They had a supply of snap rings that fit the shaft, and locked in, but it was pretty flimsy and alot thinner than the original so there would have been movement there. I tried a thicker "C" clip, but it too wasn't as thick as the original snap ring. So I ordered one, which I found on Amazon.

The second issue I ran into was an incorrect bearing in the new kit. The new "rear output shaft bearing- front" had an inner diameter bigger than the original. Its inner diameter is 1.43, with the original bearing being 1.37. I also noticed the part numbers are different, with the original being a Timken 25877, and the new one being 25880. The odd thing is they both fit nicely into the new bearing cup, so I'm guessing the difference is only in the inner diameter. The first pic is the new bearing, second is old bearing/ race, and third is the new bearing on the shaft. You can see how much slop there is between the bearing and shaft.
