1988 YJ Electrical Problem

dimanche 12 octobre 2014

I have been trying to figure out an electrical problem my '88 YJ is having, and I am not that great at debugging electrical issues.

It has 4.2l . Carb. Manual Transmission. It is pretty much original except for a newer stereo and a set of KC 6" lights.

It starts and runs fine. Owned it for about 2 years and the problem has just now occurred.

Here is my problem. When I start turning on my electrical systems (lights, windshield wipers, blower motor, ect.), they may work fine or they may act very strange. The lights may dim to almost nothing. The wipers come on by themselves. The fan blower slow to almost nothing. It does not do it all the time, but if you keep turning on electrical systems it will eventually act up. It may straighten up for a short time, then happen again. It does not seem to be caused by a loose connection. Does it parked or driving. No blown fuses, but I did smell an electrical overheat the 1st time it occurred and it was when the KC fog lamps were on.

I have had the alternator & battery both checked. Looked for loose grounds. Checked and cleaned the wire harness connection to the fuse box. I have 13.05 volts when not running. 14.48 at an idle.

Thanks for any help and suggestions.
