onboard air for a LJ Rubicon

dimanche 30 novembre 2014

Looking for advice. Part of my christmas could be an onboard air system for my Jeep. Being a rubicon, I don't need to run lockers, just air up my tires at the end of a trail run. Looking for something that can handle a 35" tire and mount on the empty tray in the engine bay. Trying to keep it to around 200 bucks. Any advice? Any reviews? ViAir? ARB? Klienn? Tank? No tank? Are they hard to wire up/install?

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Sway Bar Ring

For those using a pin to disconnect the upper and lower sway bar links, the pin with a wire loop is subject to damage and trail fail is there is twisting. i added a loop that will allow gloved hand use and eliminate leverage on the wire loop. Simple, cheap and 5 minutes.

NOVEMBER TJ of the MONTH CONTEST!!! Unlimited04 IS THE WINNER!!!

Ladies and gentleman, I present to you the November 2014 TJ of the Month.

This individual has been participating in the TJoTM contest for as long as I can remember and has by far been the most active participant month in and month out.

Several times he has come close but the title has always barely escaped his grasp. Until now.

A BIG congratulations to Unlimited04 on the win. It is well deserved my friend.

The only pain I have in seeing this is the fact that we won't see you in the contest again until December 2015. Enjoy your time off and please come back!

D44a axle shaft end play

Jacked up the rear passenger wheel to work on rocker panel rust and saw the rear wheel drop when the weight got off of it. Sure enough it moved up and down.

So today I pulled axle to prep for replacing the bearing but noticed the axle had about 1/16 in and out movement. With a tapered bearing that would allow up and down movement inside the bearing race.

What controls the end play?

How hard is it to rebuild the np247 transfer case?

How hard is it to rebuild the np247 transfer case?

You can get a rebuilt clutch pack on ebay for $295. My full time 4wd is not working. 4lo works fine. No funny noises so I believe it's the clutch pack that has been worn out. The fluid was black when I changed it last week. 114k miles on the Jeep.

Can I just put in a new clutch pack or do I need to redo all bearing/seals as well?

I also see rebuilt cases for around $775. Does anyone know of a better price for a rebuilt?

Thanks.

T176 stripped trans fill plug? ... PO ....

So I spent yesterday servicing the trans, tcase, and diffs while I wait for the replacement brake hose to the rear axle so I can test out all the new hard lines on my new to me 83 cj7 ... I didn't notice how easy it was to remove the trans fill plug (m20) but when I went to reinstall it was obvious when it basically just slipped into the hole that the PO had stripped out the threads.

so is there an "easy" way to remedy this problem? I've considered using a helicoil, building a homemade rubber plug compression (plug w/ bolt through it and washer on both sides - insert, tighten), or even drilling/tapping the m20 for a smaller bolt to use to fill the case then using jb weld to secure the m20 in place

but the helicoil would involve dropping the trans ... not sure the rubber plug would survive rather than disintegrate into my transmission over time ... and not sure jb weld would work in a gear oil environment. any other ideas that people use for this type of problem?

thanks!

exhaust resonator

Hello all, ive installed a 2.5 super 40 cat back system with a 3 inch tip on my 4.0 about a month ago. While it sounds real nice at idle and low rpms, it has a pretty raspy sound 2k and above. Will an exhaust resonator be a good idea to smooth out the tone?

No Hot Air

Hey there all! Here are the specs: Daughter's 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4dr 4x4 with the 4.0 and AC. Problem: on the cold days that we have been having she has no hot air coming from her vents. The blower motor is working, it is blowing air, just never gets warm. Also, the vent controls works, I can go from all panel, to all floor, to both, to defrost, etc, and the air will be directed from the proper location, but again, it's not hot air. Is this the infamous heater core issue I hear everyone talking about, or is it something else entirely? Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated. For most everything I have needed to fix on her truck I've been able to find using the search function, but this one has me baffled since I'm not really sure what is even wrong.:tea:

Moving day

samedi 29 novembre 2014

I was helping a friend move today. Everything was going fine until the second time we filled the truck and got ready to leave. The truck didn't move and started digging in to the front lawn. It wasn't going anywhere. Luckily, we had a towstrap. My little Cherokee saved the day, pulled that truck out of the mud. I couldn't believe it.

Thomas's Orange TJ

Well it's been a little over a year since I got my TJ and I am finally getting to the point where I am ready to start my build. This is on a high school budget, but when there's a will there's a way. A little history of the jeep, I got it last let's say August(ish) and got it just about bone stock. 153k on the 2.5L. No suspension or drivetrain upgrades, no armor, very few cosmetics. Overall they had just slapped on some chrome bullet wholes wrapped in 31x10.5 BFG A/T.

First thing I did was give her a proper name, NANCY! Now through the duration of the past year I had been overall more concerned with cosmetic upgrades, however the more I wheel it the more I spend getting parts ready for 35s.

Just to recap some of the main things I've done so far.

The first was the new soft top. Bestop Replace-a-Top in black diamond with tinted rears. Great addition and holds up great.

Soon there after it was on to bed-lining the tub. By far the bet mod to this day. Raptor Liner was my choice of ammo and I shot the whole thing myself. Came out extremely well. Couldn't have been more pleased.

The next big project I had was a touch screen Pioneer AVH-4600BT. I worked at my local car audio shop this summer and got some good deals on some custom work. New head unit as well as Kicker speakers all around and Alpine Type R tweeters in the custom door strap hook tweeter mount ordered from someone off the forum that I now cant remember.

After that much I got a Smittybiltt SRC Stinger Front Bumper and did some custom Plastidip work to black out the grill and add orange accents

along with new projector headlights and HID's

The most recent thing after that was the tire and wheel swap. Wish I would have just waited a while to do this and gone straight to 35s or atleast 33s but it's still killing it out on the trails so no complaints now. 31x10.5r15 Mickey Thompson MTZ wrapped around Procomp 7031. Nice little combo and it holds it down on the trails so they'll do until I can get 35s set up.

That's about where she sits today. I haven't been great about pictures up to this point but now that I have the thread started I'll be sure to get everything. Don't let the lack of pics in the first couple posts scare you away because I promise this will be a great build! I'll put some more pictures up of today's wheeling extravaganza and a couple others. Also gonna put a new post up tomorrow of the deal I got on craigslist for the d44 rear. :2thumbsup:

247 to 242 swap

In the process of doing this swap and I've ran into a snag, my shifter cable has the female end on it and the bracket on the transfer case also has a female bushing, what do I need to make this work ?

front dif wont unlock.

hey guys... i seem to have a problem and need some help trying to figure out how to troubleshoot it... My front dif doesnt seem to disengage (Ive read conflicting threads about wether or not the DS should always spin (mine does) but the consensus is that spinning one wheel shouldnt turn the other (again, mine does)...

I have upgraded the trans and tx case to a 98 and have tried to bypass the vac system by splicing the normal vacuum plug that would plug into the tx case (i connected red line to yellow and blie line to green... which SHOULD disengage the dif lock on the front... but it doesnt seem to do anything (i also dont know where the 4x4 indicator pickup SHOULD be (i dont seem to have the plug on my front dif anywhere i can find... and my light doesnt turn on no matter the vac configuration)... any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tj half door questions

Hey everyone, I just bought tj half doors with the uppers for 325 on Craigslist. I do not know what year they are. All they need are the mirrors and rust repair on the bottom of the doors where the drains are. Otherwise good shape. I have a few questions.

Will any year tj half door mirrors fit on any year half door? What year mirrors are the best? Best place and brand to buy mirrors? And what's the best solution to fix and stop the rust? Thank you.

lower splash shield retainers

I had to remove the lower splash shield (under radiator) which was eld on by like 4 christmas tree push-in retainers. I think they go in the bolt hols for adding the metal shield. I tired several different sizes from NAPA and the box stores, but cannot locate the right size. Eiter too small or too big. Anybody know the correct size?

2015 Grand Cherokee Overland - Don't like 20" tires?

Thinking about purchasing a 15 Overland and it comes with 265/50/20 tires. While I like the look of these tires, I don't like he cost to replace them when they wear out. Also, I am concerned about their performance in the snow verses 18" all season tires. Is it even possible to replace these with 18" tires? Any thoughts on how 20" handle snòw vs 18"? Thanks!

No heat, what could it be?

Only blows cold air. All vents work. My temp gauge does not reach mid way (210 degrees). Just replaced the thermostat a few days ago. There is a smell of antifreeze any time i turn the vents on. No visible leaks of any coolant.

What should I check/replace?

'97 wrangler No crank,No start

Greetings all. I hav been fihting with a "No crank" situation with my jeep.

When you turn the key the power comes on, but it will not crank. I have already replaced a broken ignition switch and actuator pin, had the starter checked and replaced the Neutral Saftey Switch. I also cleaned the battery terminals.

It started and ran just fine after replacng the NSS.But I drove it to wor and needed to move it, and it is doing it again.

I put the voltmeter to it. The battery is showing 12.5 at the terminals and clamps. On the power side of the starter its at 12.4. I currently have it on the charger to try and rule out a battery issue.

I'm just looking for anyhelp i can get. I would realy appriciate any suggestions you all have.

Thanks

Spartan locker in the front and open diff in rear?

vendredi 28 novembre 2014

I asked about this briefly in another thread I had on some axles I'm working on, and did get some replies, but I'm asking for some more input so I can make my final decision.

I've got the Dana 30 regeared, and all parts ready to go back on, so now's the time to decide if I want to install the Spartan locker in the front. I found a brand new in the box Spartan recently, but after looking thru the net, I'm finding alot of different answers on this. I've read people saying definitely not to do it, and others saying once you get used to it, it works great. I guess I was thinking I used 4wd alot more last winter than I really did, but the only time I'd really have it in 4HI is if the snow gets high, or when I take my kids for some runs through the mud. So if I do have it in 4HI, I'll be driving pretty slow as street conditions warrant. The majority of the time, I'll be in 2HI, and only go to 4HI if I get stuck or do a little off road like I mentioned. I see the locker as an "insurance policy" if I do run off the road and can't get out while in 2WD.

I get the point that I shouldn't have it in 4HI just driving a normal drive in the light snow/ ice.

I know at times I'll hear the clatter from the front, and that if I get on the gas in a turn, and a wheel slips, it will kick in causing the Jeep to continue forward in the direction of the slide or it could become a little squirrely.

It'll never be driven on a major highway, and will not be at high speeds while in 4HI.

Basically I'll only use 4wd if I'm in the ditch or off in the mud somewhere having some fun.

I read another site where the guy tried to explain how its better to have an open diff when one front wheel starts spinning, because if the locker kicks in, and the wheels both lock, they'll both lose traction, and it takes something away from the power to the rear wheels? I got pretty lost on that explanation...

My plan is to keep the rear an open diff at this time since I can't afford a LSD, or any other upgrades. I did read some info that mentioned an auto locker in the front and any kind of LSD in the rear is a bad idea? So if I finally do go with something in the back, I'd have to remove the Spartan.

This will be my daily driver all year around, and I don't do any rock climbing, heavy off roading, etc. The only other variable in this is my Dana 300 is twin stick, so I don't know if that

would change any advice or not.

So basically I'm asking with the parameters I've listed above, is this worth throwing in or not?

testing viscus coupling

Have a 94 ZJ 5.2 with 225K miles on it, just rebuilt the front differential and the transmission and am looking at what to do with the transfer case. I don't want VC problems to mess up my new drive train so I was thinking about changing it but wondering if there is a way to bench test it. There was just a little binding feeling when backing out of parking spots in the morning, but allways did well in the parking lot test but I have no way to tell if this has ever been changed and with 225K on it it has to be getting to the end of it's life. The inside of the case looks good from what I can see with the coupling out. The chain is pretty tight and the rear bearing seems pretty good also. There wasen't much fluid in the TC which leads me to think that it's probably original and the seals need changed. My first though was just to change the coupling and seals and run it but would like to get a few more opinions. I had thought about changing the chain and bearings too but they seem to be in pretty good shape. I do like the 249 case, this is a highway driver and it does work well in snow. I had thought about swapping the TC case but don't think the rear end would survive too much spirited driving anyway in 2 WD. Highway MPG has allways been around 19-22 at 55-60 which I think is pretty good for AWD and I don't think a swap would gain much MPG although smokey burn- outs would be a lot of fun.

tank green willys

Bought a new jeep today colors crazy not sure how I feel about it yet. Seems badass drives great too

Where are you guys getting your raw steel (to make bumpers etc.)

Hey everyone, Chicagoan here. I'm having a hard time finding raw steel for making bumpers or whatever else I'm up to. Seems most places either won't sell to me without a corporate or company account, or only sell in bulk. I don't want to order online because sure the prices are super cheap but they HAMMER you with shipping costs (understandably). I've been able to find some small random stuff via craigslist, but now I need a pair of ~6' 2x4 steel square tube sticks as a starting point for front and rear bumpers, and some random size/length round tube for the stinger etc.

So where are you all finding your steel in Chicago? I have buddies with trucks so if I have to go to one of the suburbs for something that can be arranged as well. Thanks!

Rocky Road Outfitters

Hey all, I have been doing some research on high steering conversions kits, I found a company Rocky Road Outfitters. All I saw were mainly bad reviews...but most of the posts were dated a couple years back. The company thinks its best thing ever??? Looking to see if anyone has bought any products from them recently and what ya'll think of the high steering conversion kits from them.

Jeep CJ5D original hood vent material?

When I bought my Jeep, it had a hood vent made of some sort of plastic

Is that the original hood vent or something the PO added?

Radio/connector/antenna??!

jeudi 27 novembre 2014

Hey y'all, My 96 grand cherokee has original radio, antenna, and connection. Original by way of cassette deck haha

I found out my antenna was already loose but then it got hit by a tree branch and I lost all radio stations. I tightened everything and the mounting in the well has always been a little loose but I can't find how to tighten it to the wheel well. I'm thinking it's the radio cuz I've had some issues with it before but I've always been able to pull it and fix it. Any suggestions???

Interior question

Hey

First post, sorry for basic type question, but looking at a jeep for getting to and from beach. Have dogs, lots of sand will end up in jeep. is there an interior option where i can just hose the truck out, and also safe for when it rains and top is off?

thanks a lot

"Breaking Bolts" - which WK lift kit is easiest to install?

Which WK lift kit is easiest to install?

I don't want to be breaking bolts or disassembling half the truck to install a lift. This goal applies even I have a shop do it.

I won't be driving to Tierra Del Fuego, either. I just want my rig to look better, have a little more ground clearance, and be ready for slightly bigger tires. Cost is important.

Are the kits with the extended fork struts significantly easier to install than the kits with the upper strut spacer?

For example this Heavy Metal Lifts kit:

Seized U joint Cause of Vibration?

I've spent the last month working on the XJ but the only thing I've changed on the driveline are the leaf shims(2°-4°). Driveshaft is 12.5° and pinion is 9.5°.

I've been searching for a cause of vibration that started at 15mph. Found a bad front hub assembly and replaced that. Now I get vibrations at 40+. They are speed related and happen regardless of gear and throttle position.

Looked further and found 2 of the caps on the front driveshaft were seized up. Pins are still intact but there is no grease and rusty dust. What are the odds that the u joint is the cause? Where else can I look? I'd post pics but the app doesn't like quality photos.

Ax15 swap to aw4 trans

Hey everyone , I am wanting to go to automatic trans . I have a 94 wrangler with a 4.6 stroker and ax15 trans thinking about going to a aw4 automatic trans with a manual shift. Also going to install a 4" lift and run 33/1250/15 tires . With a 3.73 gear. Just need your all opinion on this. Do you think that the aw4 is a good automatic trans for this set up ? Thanks !

Help on diff oil

Gents:

A little help here on diff oil:

The manual says SAE80W90 API GL5 and I would like to stick to this specs on a stock diff. However, my reliable source here is Mobil and they only have the Mobilube HD-A 85W-90 also GL5. Any restriction to a slight difference in their viscosity?

I am in a temperate climate with temperatures ranging from 50F to 95F (all year long) and fairly rugged landscape.

Thanks in advance!

How to disable power antenna but still use tape deck?

I did a search and didn't see a thread about this. I'd like to find a way to disable the power antenna from extending when I'm just using the tape deck. Some of the trails I want to take my ZJ on are not very difficult so I'd like to listen to some music while driving but the brush lining some of the trail will rip the antenna mast off if its up.

Driver's seat

The driver's seat on my 2012 Wrangler sport keeps lowering by itself. I crank it up every time I drive it and it is always the same scenario, it has lowered itself down. Is this normal or there is a factory defect on the seat? Any information on this subject from other owners will help me determine if it needs an exorcist or a trip to the dealer.

Help - I need a measurement on a CJ

mercredi 26 novembre 2014

I'm looking for a measurement on a stock shackle (front and rear) on a CJ5/7. I have a 1978 and the measurement needs to be the distance between eyeholes on the shackles (upper and lower holes). I'm trying to figure out how much shackle the PO put in my CJ5. Its a V8 if that makes a difference. Thanks.

xj electrical issue

So this is probably beating a dead horse with electricsl issues.

However heres mine. 2000 xj sport power all keyless entry. This morning everything fine pull into work locked the doors everything normal. Come out of work go to unlocm the doors and nothing. After unlocking woth key noticed straight away interior lights didnt turn on. Start the truck and turn on headlights, find the gauges are all inop no mileage display but backlighting is functioning.

Radio is also not working anymore. Now seems to me this is all possibly related, however havent been able to find much information on what else besides keyless entry if anything it does. It was pooring rain today so i just drove home. Will check regular fuses and wiring in the drivers door. Have also read that the drivers switch block fails alot any relation there?

If anyone has seen this symptom lemme know. Will post up what i check and find when it stops raining thanks all

hardtop cleaner and protectant

any suggestions for a good hardtop cleaner and protector

black color

I have tried a few products, some work better than others,

the old top is off a late 70's model, so it has a few years on it and has not had the easiest life.

just like the old jeep,

I just want it to look good from about 30 ft,

I realize it's like me, it will never pass close inspection.

Sticky throttle

The throttle on my 4.0L 2003 TJ was sticking and not closing completely, resulting in an intermittent fast idle condition. There were no issues with the pedal or any of the external linkage but when I took the plastic inlet off the throttle body it became clear what was causing the problem.

There was a black varnish-like crud all over the interior of the throttle body, including the throttle plate, that was keeping the throttle from closing completely. A few minutes with some carb cleaner and a rag fixed it nicely. It now works 100%, just like new!

My question is - What caused that?

It's way upstream of the fuel injectors, so not likely to be gasoline varnish. It could be crud from the oil vapors fed into the incoming air from the PVC system but the engine doesn't burn oil so it seems I shouldn't be getting a lot of blow-by from the rings & valve seals?

Never seen that much crud upstream of the throttle plate (butterfly).

Anyone have similar experience?

Wheel/tire question

So i have had the new wheel/tire combo on for about 2 weeks (100 miles over all). I have .25" spacers. Here is my question. Every other day i check the torque and not a single one has come loose, so should i be good going on a 800 mile round trip?

Need some info 2000 TJ

Looking at Barnes 4wd 3 inch drop trans skid plate . I do not wanna do a sye and am wondering if this will work with a 1 inch body lift. I can get motor mount lift if it will help . I have a 2 inch lift on jeep now but can go 3 if I can get the rite angle maybe from the motor lift . Again trying to stay close to stock and not sye but beef up some stuff whil while in process .

Looking to buy 2014/15 GC Overland

Hi, newbie here to forum and (maybe) Jeep family. Great site! :cheers2:

Need to hear and learn from owners such as yourself. My current ride is starting to expire (2007 Pontiac GP 3.8L) and looking to get something to own for the next 5 plus years. I live in central Alberta Canada. Winters are long, cold, and dark. The look and safety features of the GC Overland really appeal to me. I don't really need a V8 but would prefer it. Fuel here is about 18% cheaper than the rest of the nation and that helps.

Im just curious to know how your ownership has been like for 14/15 models, in particular:

1. How is real life gas mileage? Right now i'm averaging 24.5 mpg combined and expect the 5.7 to be 19 mpg combined (about 60% highway). Is that a reasonable assumption?

2. Im also interested in the lift suspension and how it works in the snow (this will be mostly on road use and NO plans to tow a trailer)?

3. Hows the accident avoidance camera feature and swivel headlamps? I also do a bit of country road driving and its dark and roads are not perfectly paved/bumpy.

4. Other suggestions/comments/regrets you'd like to share would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely.

starting prob

Just finished a thread and starting problem with the starter and now jeep will crank but not start. It did initially start after putting starter in. What should I test first

Look what followed me home!

After spending waaaaay too much time looking at Jeeps, I finally found one to take home with me.

2002 Grand Cherokee Limited with 4.7HO and Quadradrive.

Has bald tires and a touch of rust on the passenger rocker panel.

90,000 miles and CarFax with detailed maintenance.

I'm happy, happy, happy!

Question about which lifetime warranty to buy

I just purchased a almost bone stock 2014 JK 2 door. The only options it has are 3:73 gears (manual trans), and air conditioning. I was wondering if it is worth the extra $$ to get a higher warranty package on it since I plan on keeping the jeep for quite some time.

Here are the options I am trying to decide on:

Lifetime Maximum Care: $2,465.00

Lifetime Added Care Plus: $1,915.00

Lifetime Powertrain Care: $1,030.00

Now as I stated this is a bone stock jeep, I have upgraded the radio myself, and plan to add a small (less than 3"" lift and put no larger than 33' tires on it. At some point I may upgrade the axles, or at least add a locker to them (if I can get a OEM approved one??)

I would just like to get a warranty that will prevent me from paying most of the expensive repair bills.

P.S. I do also know that my clutch is NOT covered my any warranty.

New dana 44a...Upgrades?

I just picked up a used Dana 44a out of an 01 WJ for 25 bucks off Craigslist. WOOHOO:highfive: It has 3.73 gears which will do well for my 31" treadwrite guard dog tires.

It will be replacing my current Dana 35 in the 00 WJ. It is missing shafts and brakes, but I heard the brakes from my 35 will bolt right on to my new 44a. Is this true? Next, I am looking for advice on axle shafts? Then a locker? Anything else? Any advise is greatly appreciated.

Cleaned my EGR valve today (2.7 CRD)

I was not having any problems, I just do this as preventative maintenance on every oil burner I have ran.

Before:

[IMG] [/IMG]

To be fair it was really clean with only a dusting of carbon.

After:

Because of how clean my EGR, was I'm not expecting to see any difference in performance or MPG. Like I say I just generally do this as maintenance. It a good indication that things are running as they should be.:2thumbsup:

Part Number "Cheat Sheet"?

lundi 24 novembre 2014

I am about to purchase a TJ Rubi. Couple of questions on common part numbers - first off, where can I purchase a parts book? Second - while I am waiting on a parts book, is there a cheat sheet that lists the common part numbers? For example, I want to replace all of the fluids in the vehicle. I need the p/n's for all of the drain and fill plug gaskets, spark plug wire set, spark plugs, etc, etc.

While I am asking - where can I find a shop manual?

I'm just curious, why people bought a WK, and why you like it/don't like it, and what else you considered, and did you buy new or used?

Why I bought mine:

--The deal on my trade-in (370Z) was GOOD! As in, I got $4K more than blue-book trade-in and on bald $1600 tires, and with $12K in repaired damage from some girl hitting me, at that!

--I really like the look of the WK. It's edgy/boxy, and looks like an SUV and not a "car that rides higher".

--The HEMI motivates it well. 'Murica! I wanted back in a V8.

--The QDII AWD system looked great to me on paper.

What I like:

--HEMI

--QDII works great in the real-world

--It handles great now that I put Bilstein 4600HD's on it

--I think Jeep said it best "It fits between trees", and doesn't look like I'm hauling around a litter of whelps to the mall and soccer games.

--It looks good to me

--The amenities it has are STILL cutting edge in 2014/5.

What I dislike:

--Low retained value

--Durability is low (suspension, water pump, transmission leaks, etc.)

Did I buy new/used?

--I bought used. My note is $400/mo. I've had notes from $1K/mo, to "paid off". I also have 35 acres of beautiful property in NWA, and it runs me $240/mo. I wanted to keep my total monthly financed burden at <12% for the sake of building a house in the next year or two, and I felt that $400/mo was a very good budget to accomplish that. Buying used allowed me to get "more feature for my money", even if repair costs are included---they don't show up on a credit report.

I bought something like this so I could get home in the winter once I build a house here:

So far I have gotten everything I wanted in my Jeep. The downside being catching up on repairs that the previous owner glossed over, as well as parts having short life-spans (control arm bushings wearing out in 70K miles, water pumps only lasting 20K miles, sunroof guides already need to be replaced, etc.) So, it's a love/hate, but over-all, I still smile when I see it parked out front, when it's working.

New vehicle - 6 repairs in 7 weeks.

Here's my story.

I went to the local dealer to by a new 2014 GC in Oct 2014. My only criteria was to have a V8 motor, 20" wheels, and black on black color. They found one for me and we settled on a price. It was a dealer trade so they had to get it from a neighboring city. They called me on my way home to tell me that the vehicle actually had 5,000 miles on it because the dealer general manager had been driving it. We agreed on a different price based on this discovery. I was not upset since we had a new deal. The vehicle was delivered in an assumed "clean" condition. Let me tell you that it was not clean. It had been treated like a rental car. I have no idea why dealers allow this to happen. They call them "demo vehicles" after they trash them (or their family does...).

Anyway, that's no my beef. Since I took delivery of my GC, I've been into the dealer service shop every week to have it repaired. I have 6 repairs in 7 weeks and that's not counting each time that I have to go in for diagnostics prior to part ordering. Don't get me wrong, the dealership is great and I do like the vehicle but it is now a "love / hate" relationship that I have.

Here is a list of issues that has turned me sour over the past 7 weeks:

1) Water in tail light (replaced)

2) Exterior door trim piece detached (repaired twice)

3) Auto climate does not activate during remote start (software upgrade)

4) Navigation radio / central control screen resets randomly (different software upgrade)

5) Recall service for a list of electrical issues

6) Navigation radio / central control screen locks up completely without any function left (replacing radio / control system)

If this continues, they will get this vehicle back and I will get something else!!!

can u get 430N radio in base sport

93 xj aw4 swap questions

Wow I haven't posted here in a while! To keep everyone up to date, I have a 93 xj that lost its transmission( AW4 NP231). I've been driving my 98 zj for a while until I get it fixed. And of course, the 98 cracked the head because my luck sucks. Now I know somebody that is going to sell me a motor and tranny and tcase, 98 XJ 4.0 and aw4 and np231. I am going to put that head oon the grand and want to use that tranny for my 93. What do I need to do to make that work? I should probably swap the tranny and tcase as one, am I going to run into problems with it fitting the shafts or motor? And what about any sensors? If anyone could help or has done this swap, any help would be appreciated.

TJ 2 Piece Hardtop and Sliding Glass Uppers

Made by Ironhorse. You don't usually see TJ's running around with 2piece hardtops. I don't have room for this top so it's up for sale. All hardware included. 2 Piece design makes it lighter to pull the hardtop off vs a 1 piece hardtop. Or days you just want some sun, remove the targa top. A;so included is the upper glass sliders, they are nice and screw into your lowers with locking hardware.

Diamond plate custom rocker panel mods

I needed to spruce up my 2006 Wrangler Unltd so decided to add some diamond plate. I bought the plate from http://ift.tt/15ej7gM and it was far less expensive than I feared! One 4x8 sheet cut lengthwise and one more 2'x8' section was ~$100. Stainless sheets screws, and a backing of rubberized roofing tape between plate and body to reduce moisture damage risk... Turned out great and will now do the back corners and rear panel. Used a simple metal cutting blade on my 4" grinder and it was a breeze. What appears to be rippling is really reflections due to its mirror shine; in sunlight, it looks as flat as the metal its mounted to! Let me know what you think...

PS And, no, its not a hybrid... just my sense of humor!

no running lights

dimanche 23 novembre 2014

I have a 97' Cherokee Sport my running lights don't work, but my turn signals and break lights work just fine. Haven't looked to deep into it hoping for some help. Could it be a fuse issue or maybe a grounded out wire?

The Jeep that wouldn't go over 50 MPH

Back in the day, I had a '94 ZJ with about 200,000 or so miles on it. I was talking with a friend about it when I remembered a very strange event that took place once while driving it on the highway,

I merged it onto the highway like normal. When I went to accelerate, the RPMs jumped up to about 3000 (like they normally would) but the Jeep wouldn't accelerate. It would just stay at 50 MPH. I was on flat ground. I let off the gas, let the RPMs drop back down and pressed the pedal down again. The RPMs jumped up to about 3000 like they should and again, it acted as if it i were trying to maintain 50 MPH.

This event never happened again for the rest of the time I owned that ZJ. I'm just curious if anyone knows what caused it?

Sleeving an axle shaft groove

Thought I’d document an ongoing project. Pics are not necessarily taken in order.

I was hearing some grinding noises that ended up being worn ball joints. I replaced those with a set of Alloy USA joints. Went wheeling shortly after and had differential fluid leaking out of my axle tubes. Figured I must have broken the seal reinstalling the shaft.

I ordered a set of axle differential seals #5014852AB, some axle shaft guides #68017185AA, and a set of Alloy USA axle tube seals.

Pull the brakes, pull the shafts, pull the diff cover, and pull the differential. I ended up not needing a case spreader.

To get the old seals out – I used a 35mm socket with a few 12” extensions and a mallet. Put it down the axle tube and tap it out

I opted go with Lube Locker gaskets and an ARB dif cover. Scraped away the old RTV with a plastic scraper, then a razor blade, and finally a wire wheel brush.

Here I noticed that my axle shafts had developed a groove where the rubber seal rides on the axle shaft.

Nothing I could really do then (working at a buddy’s shop), so reassembled. Went wheeling the next week, diff fluid leaks out the tubes again.

At this point I believe the groove worn in the old axle is causing a poor seal with the new axle oil seals I installed. I pull everything apart again, measure, and order a speedie-sleeve SKF 99131. Pick up a piece of PVC pipe to use to seal the sleeve as the included seater has a solid top that will not work on an axle shaft.

Pull diff apart again, as I am removing the carrier & ring gear the seals I had installed fell out. Realize I forgot to wipe a dab of RTV on the seals as I was installing them in the housing.

I managed to break the plastic actuator plug allowing the e-locker wire to pass through the axle housing. Ordered new actuator plug #68003570AA. Pulled the shafts off the unit bearings, in so doing I damaged the passenger side unit bearing so that the ABS sensor wont fit back in the. Ordered Timken replacement #HA590242.

That’s where it stands now. Unsure if I should continue sleeving the shafts, or run it with the seals RTV’ed in place and see what happens. Pulling the shafts is a pain.

Worryingly, when I pulled the cover today there was a fair amount of metal shavings on the drain magnets for only a few week’s running time.

tj rear track bar on zj?

new to the jeep world on whats swap-able an what aint, i talked to a guy tonight that has a skyjacker rear adj track bar he pulled off his 96 tj, has the heim joint's ect i can get it for about 60-80.00 but want to know if it will bolt up

2006 Khaki LJ - aka. LlCoolJ

So I just picked up my first jeep. But not necessarily new to them. Looked for a while for this LJ Rubicon and pretty damn excited to get it. Great condition with 90thousand KM and only a little surface rust that I will take care of soon.

First two shots are from the drive home.

It has a 2.5 OME lift and another OME Body lift--not sure how much. Strangely the rear looks higher than the front. But the springs in the back are super stiff, so that may be why. Or the winch in the front is super heavy? Either way I want to level it out.

The tires are 33" Maxxis Big Horn.

Doing some research now on 35" MTR's or... really tempted to do 37" if I can find the AEV highline fenders. Will keep it on the Moab wheels. Loving the 37's because they somehow look narrower than the 35s. If I could get the MTR's in 10.5 width I think I would jump the gun on that.

Since picking it up last week, I've installed a Smitty bilt tire carrier, removed the bullbar, added new battery and took it for a spin on our first snow storm of the year. Looking for a mopar rock front bumper. but most of all highlines!

Let the buildage begin! :2thumbsup:

'99 Sahara wiring harness, unknown plug by ignition

Hoping for a little help. Stripped my '99 Sahara interior out last spring to weld in passenger floor pan, and install Monstaliner liner. Pulled the dash at that time and then the project stalled over the summer.

Just put dash back in and have a female plug on the same harness as the ignition switch that I cant seem to find the other end. It looks like it was not an orphan (appears to have been previously used). Its just below the ignition switch, gray and looks identical to the OEM connector that plugs into the fog light switch so I'm thinking its for a switch but its lead is very short so its got to plug in on the passenger side of the steering column. I could be wrong and it may have been for a option that did not come with this jeep.

I've spent a few hours on the www trying to find a image that would show the connection but no luck.

Thanks for any help.

Thermostat gasket

Drivers side tail light out, but all other lights work

Need help with possible starter issue on 1991 wrangler

Hello, Yesterday, I was pulling out of my driveway, and everything turned on fine, no weird sounds, fluids up to date, nice battery charge and I went to go do something so I shut the car off for a bit and tried to start it up again and it only makes one loud click sound and stops. The battery is pretty new so I doubt it is that and the fuel pump is working because I can hear it engage. I believe I may have a crapped out starter and would like to receive any input on this problem and how to remove the starter if necessary.

Coolant issue only when running the heater

I had an issue only when running my heater in the winter. My Jeep uses coolant in the winter and at first I thought it was the heater core. Still may be the primary issue but I think these is another issue rearing its ugly head. My heater return line is run through my intake manifold. Whenever I run my heater I also get evidence of coolant in the oil but its not horrible. Almost low enough it seams as though it may just be condensation. I only run into issues when the heater is running.

Should I run the return line on the heater back to the T-stat housing and bypass my intake on the return line. And if so how should I tie it back into the T-stat housing? Should I use a T into the small T stat housing line or do something else?

Or is this issue pointing at a bigger problem?

Please advise.

suspension question

I recently installed Rubicon springs and shocks on my JK Sport.

19 on front/ 60 on rear.

I like the ride height but it is really stiff, and I feel every pebble in the road. it gave me about 1.5-2" lift over my original sport springs.

Is there a better spring/shock combo to put on that will have the same ride height/lift but a smoother more stable ride?

steering and brake fluid change?

vendredi 21 novembre 2014

Im wanting to change out my ps fluid and brake fluid, but with it being cold out i dont feel like dealing with messes and hour jobs. So my question is, will be draining the reservoirs on both, then filling with new fluid be just as good? I figured doing this 2-3 times, once every couple of days would be ideal, but maybe im missing something?

block heater installed now leaks

I had a block heater installed in my 2007 Rubicon today and all my ccoolant is leaking out of the location it goes into the engine. Is this common and easy to fix. It is really bugging me. I never let it overheat but it did start to warm up and spray coolant all over. If i pushed on the piece they put into the engine you could hear the steam going out sputter. Should I be worried I broke anything?

gears

Hello, I am new to JF along with being a new Jeep owner. I have a 2006 Wrangler X and have been reading posts about the biggest wheel/tire I can install with out a lift. Thanks!

Lift Kit Shocks at Stock Ride Height

I've used the search but haven't found anything that really has the answer I need. I have a bone stock 2003 WJ Overland that's in need of shocks. I plan to add a 3" lift after the first of the year but I'm not ready to do that right now. I don't have the new tires yet and I'm sure that it would look really stupid with the stock tire size. My question is, if I buy a 3" lift kit that includes shocks can I use those shocks on the jeep at stock ride height? I don't want to have to buy two sets of shocks and I know I'll need the longer ones when i add the lift.

Thansk in advance for your help.

Grinding noise from rear end

Pink CB RADio... ??

Hello Jeep Peeps!! So I am trying to equip the girlfriends JK with the essentials-- For Christmas I am going to set her up with a CB radio (of course I am going to install as well). I have started changing all the accents of the jeep to pink (grill insert, decals seat covers etc..) per her request. So I figured I would do good and get a Pink CB as well. I CANNOT find one anywhere or a mic. The only thing pink I have found is a firestik antenna... any suggestions? I have already thought about just buying one and painting it-this may be the best option but I figured I would see what yall had first. Thank in advance! :cheers2:

05 GC Blend Doors? No Heat - Help!!!

Hi All,

Just like to say thanks for the information posted on this board. I've been dealing with a blower motor resistor issue, and now NO HEAT! I just fixed the resistor again have isolated the heat issue, but I don't know how to really fix it. There's a ton of intel on 2004 and younger blend door replacements, but 2005 seems to be a mystery.

So I fiddled around under the dash/ behind the console, and turned a white "insert" that seems to be made for a flathead and low and be hold, wham! HEAT! The only issue is, it resets when the fan is turned off, or when the car is turned off. How do I fix this? Is this the blend doors, other door? what the hell is this thing? I was wondering if I could drill a hole nearby and rig the doors open, or can I use a dremel and open that area up?

Any incite is appreciated!! Pic enclosed(not originally mine, but this one is cleaner than the ones I took. It's indicated by the orange arrow) to show exactly which white knob I'm talking about.

thanks!

258 cam and crank timing marks not aligning?

I've been away for sometime, but before I had to head away I was in the process of replacing my timing chain on my 78' 258. I'm replacing it as it has been knocking on the cover due to the amount of stretch/slack.

Prior to the chain being replaced the wagon was running, albeit a little rough with a definite miss and ticking coming from #6.

New timing kit is waiting to be installed.

My problem is that when the crank sprocket timing mark is inline with both fixing bolts of the cam and crank sprocket the cam timing mark is at 1 o'clock see attached photo (i'm hoping it was attached). I accidentally rotated the crank with spanner when chain was off prior to going away then forgetting about on return.

What is the procedure to get the marks to align as stated in previous threads when replacing the chain?

Is it as simple as rotate (cw)the crank until the cam mark is in correct location and then remove chain and then rotate the crank (cw) until both marks are looking at each other inline with the fixing bolts? Then replace with new timing kit.

Is it correct that the 258 is a non interference engine, therefore rotating the crank without rotating the cam, there will be no crushed valves/pistons?

Thanks heaps

Unusual immobilizer problem

Hi I need help with this. I break these for a living so have some working knowledge. I have a WJ 4.0 petrol/lpg 2001 (car A)faulty, was running perfect then immobilizer light would not go out, engine turns but no start.I have a donor car was running fine but seized engine (car B)so transfer ecu,key and transponder from A to B, key recognized immobilizer light goes out. Also transfer good ecu,key and transponder to car A, key not recognized. Have transferred the following good components from B to A, alarm module, fuse board and body control, alarm sensor, dash clocks no difference. Earths checked under centre console, near fuse board under hood and from battery and ok. It seems to me that the problem is between the transponder and the ecu but im at my wits end how to progress now, can anyone help. The only other oddity was the dash was acting up a bit prior to this but a self test proves the clocks are ok. Any ideas, thanks shay

Body Damage Repair Help

mercredi 19 novembre 2014

My "new to me" TJ has a smashed rear quarter. It also has a little bow around the gas filler that's difficult to see in the pic. I'm looking for repair ideas. I just can't see spending $1500 to have a body shop do it.

Squeaky Belt, Idler Pulley?

2002 TJ 4.0L 159k Miles

Lately I've been having a loud and persistant squeak coming from under the hood everytime the engine is on, and the squeak noise gets faster as the engine rpms increase. I replaced the belt 3 years ago with a gatorback, and replaced the belt tensioner/idler pulley about 5 months ago, but I'm starting to get a squeak noise again. Could it be the idler pulley or possibly something else?

I have a hood louver and so far the only downfall I have found with it is obviously water can get in under the hood, and it gets on the belt, ect.

Removing the Torque Converter question

I just finished removing the engine of my 2001 Grand Cherokee from the body, after 3 weeks on and off (weather permitting). After removing the engine I notice that the Torque Converter is attached to the engine. Sorry for my ignorance, now I have to remove the TC from the Crankshaft. I'm repairing the engine if possible 100%. This is my question: I'm not sure if I have to rotate it CW or Counter CW, also mark the CrankShaft position or it doesn't matter? I have some pictures if needed. http://ift.tt/1Hn4MNR

Help/Advise On Torn Up Seats

mardi 18 novembre 2014

Hey everyone,

I am new to the forum and Ive got a question that I can not seem to find the answer to anywhere, from searching and from looking around no one seems to have addressed this question before.

The previous owner of my jeep tore the heck up out of the seats, as you can see from the pics, I was wondering what you guys think my best option would be, I wanted to do new seats but finding ones that recline are in the $260 range a piece and I cant really afford that on a college student paycheck.

here are my thoughts

1) Seat covers maybe marathon or the cheaper Bestop ones -not sure if they would feel right with the huge tears in the seat, or if they would wear holes in the cover from the underneath side? also other options on covers?

2) Talk to an upholstery shop- Not sure but i assume this will be pricey?

3) Your thoughts??

Thanks in advance for your help! every though helps!!
