Hi everyone,
I just registered here and I have to say that I'm amazed by the volume of information on this site! That being said, I thought I would share my recent experience with my '95 Yj 2.5l. I picked up this Wrangler this spring and while getting it "up to snuff" I was annoyed by what many consider the usual 4 cyl engine ticking noise.
I have had a wrench in my hand since childhood, and I was SURE the noise was a bad lifter/lifters. Luckily, I happened to be under the Jeep while it was running to check for an exhaust leak. While I was under there I noticed the ticking sound was actually coming from the low/front area of the engine, not the valve train. Since I figured it could now be the timing chain, I went ahead and bought the parts I needed. The engine has almost 122,000 miles so I knew the chain was likely in need of changing anyway. When I pulled the cover I found the chain had almost 3/4 inch slack even with the automatic adjuster. After changing out the chain, gears, seal, and adjuster, this little guy is quiet as a mouse! For once, I didn't jump to a quick conclusion based on past exerience and it paid off.
Looking forward to sharing info with all of you....be safe.
