Hydrolic Lifter Collapsed?

dimanche 22 mars 2015

I have finally managed to get around and replace my timing chain. Only taken me about 6mths! Replaced it due to knocking noise coming from the cover.

Anyhow, so I was rotating the crank to ensure I had the chain on correctly and all marks were aligning and noticed that the #5 exhaust rocker was not moving to open the valve, not even the pushrod was moving when engine was rotated.

Is this a sure sign that the lifter is no longer a lifter? Possibly a buggered cam lobe?

The history leading to this is:

6 months ago (ish)Engine missing with a ticking noise from Valve cover, and a knocking from the timing cover. ( please see my other threads)

Drained oil to remove timing cover, as it was due for replacement also.

6 months later replace timing chain and rotate engine by hand.

Noticed the rocker

Removed rocker and checked pushrod, pushrod okay

Looked down pushrod cavity and lifter looks in one piece.

Checked all other rockers for free play, all of them has some play, even the ones with valves currently open.

Do hydrolic lifters leak down over time (6 months) to the point where in this case the majority of the rockers are loose and #5 Exhaust does not open?

Engine was running reasonably fine prior to taking off timing cover.

Is there a solution to fix this other than replacing the Cam and lifters?

Should I try to turn over the engine less spark and fuel to see if the oil pressure can prime the lifters? That is once I put some new oil in.

Any Ideas? Suggestions/ fixes?

Aprreciated
