97 2.5 blew a piston. Can I use any 2.5 block?

jeudi 27 mars 2014

My TJ gave up the ghost with a big bang the other week. Just pulled the head and found some pieces of the #2 piston. The rest is down in the oil pan. It left some scratches in the cylinder wall but my buddy thinks it's possible it wasn't too deep and I can bore it .020 or .030 over and rebuild. Locally, I've gotten a hold of an 87 of unknown mileage and around me there are a few more from 93 to 95. Can I use any of these blocks as a basis for a rebuild? I looked at the specs give by a few "remanufactures" and it looks like they all use the same castings to 2001 but they are listed as being compatible with 83-87, 87-90, 91-01. It looks like the differences are the actual manufacture (AMC for 83-87, Chrysler for the rest) and fuel delivery system used. (Carb, TBI or MFI). If I am using the accessories from my 97, would it matter whether I started with an 83 or 93?

Some of the older 2.5's that have been sitting around are cheap and the local pull a part has a few 80's cherokees with 2.5's in them. That is assuming my block is too damaged to bore out. Just looking for options. I was thinking of going with fivestarengineexchange in Phoenix. $1099 + tax for an exchange as long as I bring him a rebuildable core.

Unless someone knows a good shop in Tucson.

Thanks,

Toonces
