Hi everybody. I'm in the process of rebuilding the manual transmission on my '74 CJ5 with the 304 AMC engine. Based on the VIN the jeep came with the 3-speed transmission, but the PO swapped in a 4 speed. I don't have his phone number any longer as I've had the jeep a while now. Anyway the tranny specs: It's a 4 speed with reverse to the right and up, the case is stamped T98-1R, the first gear on the input shaft has the correct number of splines for the 6.32 1st gear (per Jeremy at Parts Mike), the PTO cover is passenger side (Ford?), the top of the case is a uniform rectangle shape with six bolts (Jeep?).
I also ordered a '74 Jeep CJ5 clutch kit and the input shaft my transmission is too large for the stuff in the kit. I knew that was a shot in the dark but it did not pay off.
I've looked at Novak's transmission ID info and my tranny did not seem to be overtly indicated. I think it is a T18 based on everything, but I cannot find a clutch and the Transtar BK114 T18 '65-'93 rebuild kit did not have the correct roller (needle) bearings in it. It did have the correct main case bearings, one was 20mm and the other 23mm. SO...anyone know exactly what I have?
Thanks! If you need more info let me know and I will get it to you.
I'm driving up to Parts Mike tomorrow morning with my old clutch components, the case, and the input shaft so hopefully I will have an answer in the morning but I thought I would seek your knowledge first.
