I have a 1989 YJ with a 4.2L I6. It has a brand new carter carb without the stepper motor.
My problem: If I fire the jeep up it runs like a top, idles right where I want it and can lug low and won't die. My problem is when you need more power. In first gear I can hit 3000 rpm's without any hesitation, no sputtering, no missing, just does what it is supposed to do. However, in 2nd gear right when I get to 2000 rpm's the jeep flat out loses power until I slow down and allow the rpm's to lower. It is not a sputter like it is running rich or lean, and it doesn't backfire. The whole front end just nosedives, rpm's drop down to 400 and oil pressure to about 10 (it wants to shut off), it also does this when the rpm's get to about 1800 in third gear. Its annoying when climbing hills, and because my locker likes to kick in when the front end drops its a bit violent.
So here is what I have done: Spark plugs have been replaced within the last 8,000 miles, oil was changed 1500 miles ago, the rotor, and cap were all replaced two months ago. A month ago my mechanical fuel pump went out so I set up an electric one, replaced the fuel filter and she ran like a top once again. (hitting 4000 rpm's without breaking a sweat) I do not have any kinked fuel lines, and as far as I know there isn't any blockage in my exhaust. If I don't get the rpm's up to 2000 the jeep runs perfectly fine, you would never know anything was wrong with it. I have also readjusted my timing within the last three months after the last misfire issue I had.
My thought process: the fuel pump that I have on there isn't stout enough and isn't pushing enough fuel when its needed at a higher rpm (but wouldn't I have noticed that right after I put it on?) My fuel filter is clogged. (but its brand new) My catalytic converter is shot and is blocking the flow of exhaust? Or maybe I have a vacuum leak somewhere, (even though it was smoke tested two months ago by my local shop.)Tomorrow I am going to check the spark plugs to see if there is anything out of the ordinary there. I will recheck the cap and rotor and see if they need replaced. I will check the timing, and see if my vacuum advance is functioning properly. If needed I will put a higher volume fuel pump on tomorrow, but I really hate throwing parts at it hoping something will eventually fix it.
Im a 19 year old college student with a jeep and love the learning opportunity of working on my jeep. BUT I am not near as experienced as many of the members on here, and I would appreciate some insight on the gremlin within my jeep.
