88 pioneer 4.0 5-manual 4x4 missing t-case

lundi 2 mars 2015

Bought an 88 pioneer 4.0 4x4 with a 5 speed manual for a case of beer the other day. Got this for my dad (65 year old special ed teacher) so i'm on a budget to get this driving him to work. Previous owner removed all but 3 leaves in leaf spring , heated the coils to make it a curb scrapper, and cut corners on all wiring. I removed the bed and built a bastard pack from my old cj7 leaves, and raised the front to inspect the steering and coils. The guy removed the transfer case and made it a 2x4. It still has the 4wd front axle, shifter, and harness. Making her 4wd is not a priority at this time.

What the previous owner told me:

  • Jeep went into limp mode for a while, corrected itself and worked fine

  • Transmission rebuilt and 40,000 miles later ruined the motor somehow

  • New motor put in and ran fine for a while till went back into limp mode

  • Tossed money into buying all new sensors, distributor, fuel rail, injectors, and fuel pump and was sick of it when i bought him the case of beer.

From what i have noticed and done:

  • cleaned most electric connections, grounds, and dielectric greased them

  • drained dirty fuel from tank

  • missing electric fan, exhaust pipe after cat, and most a/c parts

  • cleaned throttle body and fired the jeep up with a little gas in the throttle body

  • hooked up egr system that was all capped off

What i need to know is:

  • Can i get it out of limp mode without putting money into 4wd for my dad to drive to work safely

  • how hard would it be to convert back to 4x4

  • Is missing the t-case, its position sensors, and having its vacuum lines dangling why it's stuck in Limp Home Mode

  • 21 or 23 spine short/long shaft np231 t-case

  • where does the output speed sensor hook up without a t-case
