Crankshaft Position Sensor Question

lundi 31 mars 2014

So I recently, like four months ago, changed my crank pos sensor. It was nice for like two days, but then the Check Engine light came on and sometimes flashes when the engine goes into higher revs.

When I replaced this, I did not put a small metal bracket back in. I decided to run without because I thought it was useless and too hard to put back in.

I checked the codes and I've got a misfire on all cylinders except #5 and something else was wrong but I forgot what it was. New plugs, wires, cap and rotor didn't help, besides giving it a little more power I think.

Now I am thinking that the metal bracket that was on the sensor originally was actually some kind of spacer to allow for more of a gap between it and the transmission housing...

Will putting this little metal piece back in solve all of my problems, or is it something else? Call me lazy, but that little sensor is a PITA to mess with and would like to avoid ever touching it again...

jeep driveshaft or chevy

Hello all, new to forum, sorry if this question been posted already but I couldn't find it. Anyway doing a swap on my 93 yj putting in 350 motor and 700r4 tranny. Question is, do I use jeep driveshaft and adapt the rear side or do I use chevy driveshaft and adapt the front. Not going to be doing offroading just daily driver but want 4wd available when I need it. Thanks for any tips you can give me or links!

i need help!!!!

i need help on a situation i have. I have a 97 jeep grand cherokee laredo that i have swap another engine to it and i've been running it for couple years now. however, the water pump fail on me recently and had another one put on. then the idle pulley shot on me and replace it too. However, i notice that the belt is riding half way on the fan pulley and not aligned with the whole pulley. So, basically i been riding with the belt riding on half of the pulley. i checked the alignment of all the other components( a/c compressor, idle pulley, belt tension, and alternator) and it all aligned together except the water pump pulley was sticking out farther then the rest about maybe half inch out. after, researching other jeep water pumps and what pump fits, i think the engine was from a cherokee instead of a grand cherokee. but the water pump from the cherokee don't have a fan clutch put on like the pump for the grand cherokee. which, i think it will fix my problem because it doesn't stick out as much. however, because there is no fan clutch with the water pump for the cherokee, im stuck on what to fix my problem.

I was wondering if anyone have this problem before or suggestion to this. Also , if anyone knows if other fan pulleys from other vehicle that can be use that is little bit wider so the belt can ride on instead of half of the pulley.

pls, let me know any suggestions that will make it work.

thanks,

pokiemua

72 CJ5 power steering conversion

I have a 72 CJ5 I am doing the conversion on, I am looking at the Cardone 27-7521 gearbox and Cardone 20-6179 pump but what pulley should I use since the pump does not come with one? And are the Cardone products good?

WTB: Yj shocks 3 inch lift.

Looking for some shocks in good shape for a Yj with a 3 inch lift.

Is it ok for the front axle to be off center at full bump?

I just purchased my first Jeep. An 04 LJ that came with a poorly installed, cheap 4" suspension lift.

The lift required a new front track bar hole drilled 3/4" inboard of the factory at the axle. With the 2" bump spacers installed on the axles pad, the axle is off center by 7/8" to the right at full bump.

I assume that is correct by the design of the lift?? It seems goofy

Would an adjustable track bar correct this?

Thanks for the help

New or used JK?

My XJ is getting pretty rough for daily driving. I need to upgrade to something that can handle DD.

Would it be better in the long run to get a new one if I am going to be driving 15k+ miles a year? The saves between new and used isn't that big, and the interest rates on a used jeep are a lot more than a new one.

what should be plugged here??

So i got the jeep running good and got a lil cocky hitting some mud for the first time..now it's throwing codes for an o2 sensor bank one electrical connection or whatever and a trans range sensor...well i changed the nss before all the drama and there is a lil play in the shifter...linkage im sure...but the o2 threw me for a loop then i read about the relays and fuse...fuse is fine...well going to the pdb i noticed an unplugged wire but nothing close

5-33x12.5r15 mud terrains

I have for sale 5 33" mud terrains for a 15 inch rim. 4 are BFG km1's and are at around 12/32's for the tread and the spare is a interco trxus in the same size with lower tread. Tires all held air excellently with no problems for the 3 yrs now that I've had them. One has a bit of a gash in the sidewall that I didn't notice til I was dismounting them from the rims. They've been off roaded and show it just a little but are in overall average shape. I can send pics if you'd like but can't figure out posting them....maybe it's my iPad, idk.

Best way to reach me is text/call @ 732-535-0401.

I can meet up to deliver. I'd really prefer not to ship if I don't have to but have access to commercial loading dock with a forklift.

Asking 500 obo...feel free to try me with offers, I'm building up my jeep to one tons and just looking to move these, already have my 40's mounted on race lines, my d300 and my axles. Trades considered for ORI's, duraflex joints, one ton steering stuff, metal cloak fronts, blank aluminum corners, RCI fuel cell, or cable shifters for a flipped d300. I have cash if needed to work out a trade deal for something more valuable. ALL OFFERS CONSIDERED...worst I can say is no thanks.

What soft top should I get???

I am looking to replace my soft top on my 04 Ruby, and I was looking to get the Bestop Trek NX in Black Diamond. If there is something better out there and or the pros and cons on this top fill me in!!

WK CRD Transmission leak at sensor(?)

I have a leak at a sensor (I think it is a sensor - just two wires) at the front passenger side of the transmission. It is just in front of the dip stick/fill tube entry to the transmission case just above the pan. Can anyone tell me what the sensor is and how to replace it? The Jeep is a 2007 WK CRD.

Dumb Question?

I'm new to the jeep world this is my 1st jeep a 2000 Grnd Cherokee

with a 4.0 my fan is going bad as it wobbles (bad bearings) striking the fan shroud

but here is my question is there supposed to be 2 fans an electric and mechanical? because I have both?

KK extended brake lines how-to?

Hi KK owners,

Who has installed extended rear brake lines or replaced stock brake hoses on their KK? I'm looking for any advice you can share from your experience. If you have a how-to, this would be ideal.

I have a pair of braided JBA extended rear brake lines to swap in for the shorter oem rubber brake hoses. Not sure what kind of work this is going to entail. Is it simple swap job or did you have to fab anything? (like flaring the ends of the metal lines, or building your own mounts, etc.)

I'm aware I would need to bleed the brakes afterwards, and also I need to make sure the new lines don't rub against the tires (re: JeepNCrowd's unfortunate experience with his brake shop).

Thanks,

Lauren

Headlight Armor

Just installed Headlight Armor on my headlights, signal lights and fog lights.

I went with smoked because I didn't like how the lights contrasted with the Granite paint.

Install was pretty straight forward. I did have to trim one of the films a bit. Heating the films while installing definitely helps them conform to the contours of the lenses.

Rear Brake Line Size ?

Does anyone know what size and flare type the line is where the Rear T-hose connects to on the frame side? Not the "T" side on the axle, but where the flexible T-hose connects to the hard line on frame. My local parts stores don't stock them for me to look at, and the computer doesn't say what the size is.

Edit: it's a 2005 TJ with Dana 35 rear axle with drum brakes.

Recall??

Why is there no recall on the front coil spring perches on the WJ's?

c-clip gears into a non c-clip axle

I'm looking at a set of axles. D30 and D35 that have 3:73's gears in them. I'm not sure of the year on the D35. IF it's the newer c-clip style, can the carrier, ring and pinion be moved into my non c-clip axle? I'm currently running 3:07 and would like to move up just a bit. 3:73's would be a nice upgrade.

Before anyone goes down the D44 or 8.8 road, yes - I know the benefits, but it's not something I'm looking to do at the moment. I can grab these axles for a very fair price and they would suit my needs for at least the next year or two.

my buddies new project.

he bought this project jeep for next to nothing.. I know it looks a little rough but it does run and the frame is solid. we will be beating on this thing for beeks to make it street legal.

broken block

According to the P.O. this is a low mile Jasper rebuild. its a 4.2 out of an 89 YJ I'm doing a build on. I pulled the engine trans and tc as one piece months ago and just got to taking them apart and found this. as you can see from the picture there is blue paint on the crack and in the threads so its been like this for a while. Anyway I would like to save this engine it runs and sounds great. I did a similar repair years ago on an old tractor using a high nickel electrode designed for cast iron. I put a proper length stud in the threads that remained and warmed up the block area SLOWLY to about 250 degrees and layed in very small beads and peening each weld immediately trying to never get the block hot. So I had a stud sticking out of the block instead of a threaded hole. It worked and 15 years later it is still holding. Is this a good process for my YJ engine or did I just get lucky the first time. Any input will be appreciated

Head gasket or complete rebuild?

Hey so here is my dilemma 2000 TJ 4.0 (0331)head casting, no oil pressure at hot idle, it's drinking about a quart of coolant every 50-75 miles ( my drive to and from work) I can see some leakage at the head gasket on the oil filter side around 3,4 cylinder, and the oil is contaminated with coolant.

So should I just do the head gasket, or should I do the entire motor ( 136k miles) but the motor has tons of power and the oil pressure is good when it's cold ( I have a mechanical oil pressure gauge that reads 50 psi @ cold temp idle/ 4 psi @ hot temp idle) there is no loss of power after it gets hot.

One of my big questions is, does any of the motor people think the main bearings are gana go bad after I do the head or are already bad?

Thanks everyone for the future input.

Not looking to swap in a V8 or anything just keep the motor that's in it maybe swap to a stick in the future haha

WTB Front and rear axles Dana 44, 9 or 8.8 w/4:10's

I am looking to buy front and rear axles for a TJ. Need dana 44, 9 inch, or 8.8 with 4.10 or 4.88 gears.

Have cash and looking for someone in California/Nevada wanting to sell. If you do the delivery.... I can throw in 2-3 nights stay at a very nice resort up in Mammoth Lakes, CA.

Thanks

A pound or two of wisdom - Axle swap

Need some direction.

I have a 2000 Tj. Want to do an axle swap. It looks like I should be looking for an HP 30 off of an XJ 84 to 96 for the front? And perhaps a Dana 44 rear or 8.8, perhaps a 9inch for the rear?

Can someone suggest what vehicles axles I should be looking at that would actually be close to bolt right in?

Also.... as much as I am afraid to ask.... by the time you install the proper gears bearings, brackets, etc.... are we just better off buying a completed axle to bolt right in? I know that can depend on if we are lucky enough to run across some killer deal. But I am not that lucky.

Anyway..... not sure what direction to go.

Will be installing a 6 inch lift. 35" tires. Current TJ is stock 4.0 5 speed.

I drive short distances to work.... and offroad just about every weekend. I live where snow can range 300 inches to as much as 700 inches in a season. I think I could live with 4.11 gears. But open to suggestions. If I have someone else do the regear..... what am I looking at generally speaking $$.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I can weld and have the room to do my own work.... to some degree.

Oh.... and I don't really want to spend $2500 plus per axle if I can avoid that. No offense to anyone..... but that just is nuts. How the heck did that happen!?

Oil pump choice

I have a bit of an unusual task in front of me for my current 4.0 rebuild. I'm boring and stroking the block out to 4.7L and plan on dropping it in the 83 American. Like the previous engine, it's only going to hold 5qts oil. Is the physical structure and oiling points in the 4.0L the same as the 258 or is there something I missed? I'm looking at a few available oil pumps care of Melling and Sealed Power and I see a mix of standard volume pumps and a high volume pump. The Sealed Power high volume pump 224-43505 looks like it would have been perfect for my old engine but that time has passed.

I'm wondering what kind of behavior I can expect if I put a high volume pump in a new engine. I won't be using the 4.0 pickup. Rather, I remember the 258 pickup being necessary but I don't remember if the only difference was the clocking of the tube.

JEEPs with Stinger Bumper, and Fog lights

I am kinda new to the forum, (I just became a member). I had a YJ a few years ago, I just bought an 08 4 door Unlimited X, Rescue Green Jeep. It is stock as of now, but I am looking into getting an aftermarket front bumper for it. I like the Stinger style front bumpers, but I haven't seen many of them with fog lights mounted on them, or with a Jeep that is not insanely modified.

lift questions

So I have a 93 yj 4.0 with the ax15 tranny im running a 3.5 inch bds suspension lift kit with 33x12.5 every one says I need at at least a 4.0 inch lift kit to run 35 inch tires on the 15 inch rims. It looks like I got plenty of room but do any of you guys have my size lift and run 35s? Another thing I was rold was a 4cyl has a hard time running 33s so my 4.0 would apparently have a prob turning 35s? Any input is appreciated

Should I siphon my gas tank?

My ZJ has stood for nearly a year without running. It has an almost-full tank of gas. Am I going to be causing myself problems if I try to run it with that gas?

My main concern would be how I actually siphon the old stuff out - isn't there some kind of anti-siphon device in the filler neck? I really don't want to have to drop the tank...

Front Bumper Options?

I am wondering what insight can be provided, other than just opinions about their "cosmetic value", in regards to the aftermarket front bumper options that are available for the KK? What the pros versus cons would be, etc.?

To my knowledge there is two decent aftermarket options available, AtTheHelm's and Rock Lizard's. Of course for the same amount, I think you could buy a factory model?

Which leads me to my other question/rant....

Perhaps somebody can shed some light on why it is so difficult to contact anybody at Rock Lizard?

The "contact us" links on the website seem to always bounce back as undeliverable. I'm not even sure which is the right website? There is two, rocklizardfab.com and there is rocklizardfabrications.com (both with very different pricing!?). I have also tried calling, and left a message.

Anyhow, "Jeep 1 - Bambi 0". So, I need to replace my front bumper. For the price, it doesn't make sense to replace it again with stock, when I can get a much better option for the same price from RL, or AtTheHelm.

Cash (in full) in hand, and I will be making my decision in the next 48 hours.

AtTheHelm was very quick to respond to my first email, and provided a quote in less than 24 hours.

With the difficulties I have had getting a response, or contacting anybody for that matter, ...I am heavily reconsidering whether I should just give up on the RockLizard option.

If any body can fill me in on either of these dilemmas, that would be grande!

Until then, I will continue to stare at my "mock-ups" of each bumper - wondering how long until I have one. Actually, you all can stare at the attached pics and wonder as well.lol

Transmision Slipping (09 JK)

I have a 09 JK.

I had a transmission fluid line to the first cooler changed the other day at the Chrysler dealership (Line was leaking).

Since then, after the JK has sat for a few hours, when I begin to drive, stop, then start again, the transmission slips, the engine revs, then it slams into 1st gear.

I then noticed when I put it in reverse, I had no reverse.

I cycled the gears a few times, then it went into reverse.

I just tried it again after it sat over night, same thing, started to drive, I stopped, then started again, it slipped, slamming into 1st gear after I revved the engine.

I drove a couple hundred feet, stopped, put it in reverse, again, no reverse until I revved the engine a couple times, which it then slammed into gear.

After it warms up, it runs fine, no slippage. So far, I have only noticed it when it is cold.

(Yes, transmission fluid level s good)

I am thinking there is air in the system.

Also, when transmission fluid is added, at the same time, aren't you supposed to cycle the gears as you fill it? The dealership said they did not do that.

Thanks as always for your expertise / help.

tire size

Transfer case swap NP249 to NP231

I bought a used transfer case out of an XJ 23 spline short input shaft. What troubles me is that the 231 output rear shaft seam slightly longer with external slip yoke, while my stock 249 has internal slip yoke. I believe the 231 is 96 and newer and the stock 249 is 95 so I can swap input shafts with no issue but the rear output?

Do I go and find a 96 and newer rear drive shaft out of a ZJ/XJ or can I swap rear output shafts and housings??

95 zj relay center question

I have a 95 zj 5.2 that developed a ticking noise from behind the glove box after my last wheeling trip. The interior lights started flashing randomly, the radio started coming on and off and both eventually stayed off, then the ticking came but only when a door is open. found when I pull the illuminated entry relay ( one on the bottom right) the ticking quit, tried multiple relays to replace it with but none worked, what else can I check? Any suggestions?

545rfe…toast?

Basically, after dumping several hundred dollars and countless hours into my '02 Overland to make it run good again. I cleared up the smoking, stalling, rough idle and various other issues. Driving it again for the first day it starts clunking around and hunting for gears getting onto the freeway. Luckily I had only a short way to go so driving in 3rd(?) @ 55 got me where I needed to go. Being familiar with Jeeps, I immediately thought TPS, but I got a P0700 in the odo so I called my buddy with a fancy scanner to read the tranny codes which came back P0734 and P0735, incorrect ratio for 4th and 5th gear, respectively. Fluid level is good and doesnt look or smell burnt. I went ahead and changed both the input and output sensors on the trans with no luck. If I turn the O/D off when I first start driving, so it never tries to shift into o/d, it drives great. Shifts smooth, no hesitation/slippage, has tons of power, etc. If I drive it with the o/d on it behaves as described above and then seems to go into some sort of limp mode.

I know very little about cars, even less about automatic transmissions. I am thinking that something is wrong with the o/d unit? I am completely ignorant though. Could the TPS be causing the problem even though I don't have a code for it? I have had them go bad in other Jeeps and it caused all kinds of funky stuff to start happening. I am really wanting to get rid of the Jeep so I sick of throwing money at it. Sorry so long. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Rgfab

93 NP249 shift linkage issues

I've posted this question before but its been several years ago. I'm hoping for some new insight, maybe someone here these days can help because there wasn't much help available last time. I can't believe I'm the only early ZJ owner on the forum to experience this issue....

The shift linkage for the 4wd option is supported by a cross pin which is mounted on one side by a bracket attached to the frame and on the other side it slips into a hole in the trans case. This pin continues to fall out of the trans hole, rendering my 4x4 shift lever useless. It has been suggested that my engine or trans mounts are bad, allowing enough movement of the trans that the pin falls out. I don't think this is the cause of the issue for two reasons. One, when inspecting movement of the engine/trans using various methods, there doesn't appear to be any excessive movement that would indicate faulty mounts. Secondly, if I replace the cross pin back into the trans hole where it belongs, it will stay there indefinately until I attempt to put the trans case into 4 low. I can get it into 4 low but only once or twice until the pin works loose and falls out again.

We all know this was a crappy design but I don't see anyone else doing much complaining about this issue. So, anyone have any ideas? What's causing this and what's the fix? Thanks for any advice!

I keep blowing my IGN LPS fuse when I have my sound system hooked up. Pioneer head unit with amp and sub. Also the head unit will operate with the ground unhooked. Anyone want to tackle this one??

What keeps the Rear window closed on a hardtop?

Hey guys, just wondering about the hardtop glass and what keeps it shut. I was thinking that the tail gate should keep it shut but mine tends to move past the seals and then rattle and makes my rear wiper catch the centre tail light when I go to operate it? I do have the brackets installed for it on either side. Does someone have a picture of the way it should look?

Any advise?

Thanks.

'01 XJ Stock Antenna Removal

Hello, all.

I'm replacing the p-side fender skin on my wife's '01 XJ, and need to transfer the original antenna mount.

Are there any special tools needed for this?

Some pics of the process would be useful.

I'd like to do this without destroying the mount.

Thanks in advance.

Taillights Too Dim

Quick question, my local shop will not pass my TJ for its state inspection due to "dim taillights". So I went ahead and replaced both lamps with 2057 dual filaments just like the OEMs and cleaned the lenses inside and out, they are not cracked or hazed. I also took a small bottle brush and cleaned the sockets with some electrical spray cleaner, then greased the bulbs. I don't see any difference. The guy made the point that he has replaced several TJ tail lamp assemblies because of this. Huh? Fwiw it passed everything else (emissions, brakes, etc) just that the rear lights weren't bright enough.

Never had this problem before, I do my own wrenching but this guy is within walking distance of the house and has passed all my other cars including this TJ for their inspections last year so its convenient to drop the car off to him. Actually last year he failed the TJ because one of the flare mounted side markers wasn't working. Easy fix, had been meaning to take care of it anyway so I didn't think anything of it. Maybe I need to drop it at a quick lube place to get it passed.

Has anyone had to replace their rear lights because they weren't bright enough for a state inspection? Is this a common issue?

Soft top tailgate seal?

I did a search and didn't what I need so.... I have an 03 Rubi. Smittybilt soft top came with Rubi when I got her. The bar that goes across the top of the tailgate is there. Official ZJ fan

I grew up loving lifted Chevys and never thought I would own a jeep. I was given one for "free" last sept. after all the work I've done to it, I figure why not take it out since its been raining a lot lately and it's been warmer weather. That fully stock ZJ with highway tires mind you out performed a lifted avalanche and a lifted 1500!!! She made me proud!! Waiting on my lift parts to come in and most likely some 31's soon so I can really show them how it's done!! She's a keeper for sure! No broken parts from it either!! Bonus!!

Upper arm play opinions please

airbag/seatbelt light

I have a the airbag light and seatbelt light turned "ON" all of the time. I know Jeep is aware of the situation and currently seeking a way to fix the problem but has there been any successful fixes from anyone????

Replacing F axle connections

I'm putting the questions first, then the explanation in the hope of getting answers from those that don't like reading long posts. :p. All questions pertain to my all stock (I think) 2006 Unlimited Rubicon.

1 : Is it correct that the upper control arm bushings are the same on frame and axle end?

2 : For the stock style bushings, are there any manufacturers I should look for or stay away from?

3 : Are there any known points I can measure to double check that I am at stock height? It all looks stock to me except the front coil isolator (I think I have seen it called that) is 2.5 inches think. It just seems big. If it is high enough over stock to run the Currie Correctlink I would go like to go that route.

4 : Any manufacturers of stock style steering that you would recommend to use or not use?

5 : Any manufacturers of stock length track bar that you would recommend to use or not use?

History -

Purchased my 06 Unlimited Rubicon with 93K miles and bald tires. Had to drive it for a few days with the bald Wrangler MTRs before having them replaced. During that time I noticed an occasional slight shimmy in the steering after hitting bumps. When new tires were put on, the shimmy went away.

The whole time I have owned it there has been a slight vibration reverberation when hitting large bumps. It almost feels like hitting large bumps in a truck with a loose load in the back, except the noise and feeling comes from the front. On a couple of occasions I have been underneath and pushed, pulled, and shook with all my might on all the connections to the front axle, ie control arms and steering components and found nothing that seemed anything less than rock solid. When replacing my RMS I poked and prodded at the motor mounts and they seemed fine (honestly don't know how to properly check them) and checked the trans mount since I dropped the skid plate to get the exhaust out of my way. It to seemed fine.

Now to my problem.

The shimmy when hitting some bumps has returned. When I noticed a slight shimmy a couple times in a month, I rotated the tires, but it has continued and is getting worse. I've once again climbed under the rig and done the push pull shake shimmy to no avail. Did the dry steering test and it seems like both ends of the drag link have slight up and down movement when changing direction. Two other people looking at it said they didn't see it, but I could swear I saw some slight movement, that is why I say "seems like".

To sum everything up and ask a few questions, I am thinking of changing out all the stock front control arm bushings, the track bar, and replacing the drag link and tie rod. Yes, its kind of a bazooka approach but I'm hoping that will put an end to the bump reverberations and the steering shimmy in one fell swoop which with my limited free time is what I need. I'm thinking of getting the HD Crown steering setup but wouldn't be adverse to just buying a stock type drag arm and a ZJ tie rod from another manufacturer if I know which ones had decent quality. The Jeep is stock, so most upgrade components either won't work at stock height (currie correct link, aftermarket track bars) or simply are too much coin (arms with JJs). So...

Thanks for your time.

transfer case noise

Quick question all... so I engaged my 4wd on my CJ5 today and when I went into 3rd gear I could hear and feel metal banging together. I have a T15 transmission. The 4wd works but I can hear metal rubbing when in 3rd gear and 4 hi. Have no idea why it started all of sudden, any ideas??

any issues driving with rear glass open?

samedi 29 mars 2014

I don't have any crossbars on my roof rails and I need to bring a 10ft ladder to my dad tomorrow. Any reason for concern with sticking it out the back with the glass open? I'm only going about 25 miles, at 55-60mph max. generally.

Just installed sway bar disconnects....quick question

I just installed Rubicon Express front sway bar disconnects today. They are basically a copy of the JKS. I adjusted both links to the exact same length. However when I go to connect them I notice the sway bar is a bit different on each side due the fact my passenger side seems to sit just slightly lower than the driver side. I assume its either a weaker spring or there is just more weight on that side. I had to use my high lift on the passenger side to connect that side of the disconnect (or I could have a buddy pull up on the bumper).

Is this normal for this type of disconnect? Will it cause any harm?

Thanks,

Jay

Quick question

Have a 98 zj with the 5.2 lifted 3 inches with 32 inch tires. So basically I lifted the zj with 2.25 bb spacers and my 1inch up country springs. Now if I was to remove the rear spring and use a stock zj v8 front spring in the rear could I eliminate the rear spacer? Just not very fond of the rear spacer .

lift springs

Ok now.......whose the expert on spring rates and such in the aftermarket world. I sure could use some help.

I've installed the aev 2.5 inch lift on my rubicon unlimited and it rides really well at times and then at times it's too stiff. Especially side to side. And the rear rake kinda of ticks me off. I also installed the correction brackets. I got 2.5 inches of lift in the front with the winch and almost 3.5 in the rear. I dont have a heavy bumper system and I'm worried once the top comes off in the summer the rake will be even more.

are the progressive springs only good when the jeep is loaded up? I'm wondering if I need to remove the springs and maybe install a different brand that are constant rate with different spring rates based upon the front to rear weight.

What I'm thinking now is there is not a one lift fits all. I had this same problem with my old YJ. I finally bought a good set of Rubicon express springs and then I modified them to fit the jeep. It just seems so easy to me why a company can't sell different spring rates based upon the weight of the vehicle and desired lift.

Any one else dealt with this.....I don't think i'm alone.

Paracord Oh sh** handles tutorial

'Twas a dark, dreary day and I was forced once again by my subconscious to mess with the Jeep out of sheer boredom.... So I made some paracord crab handles and figured I would make a tutorial while I was at it! Enjoy!

First, take off the little plastic covers. They should pop right off.

You should be able to take a screw out with a 1/8 Allen key. Very complicated, I know...

There will be a small patch of headliner fabric showing under the molding. I fixed that by cutting a 1.5 in section of black tubing in half and drilling a hole in the middle for the screw to pass through.

Just stick the piece of tubing behind the molding, use a washer to hold the paracord in place, and screw it all in.

And WHAMO! a brand new, slick lookin' paracord handle that will feel a lot cooler for your passengers to use when you're whipping around turns at lightning speed.

Front Driveshaft missing

So... where can I get one.

I'd really like 4WD, lol.

Apparently, the person who had it before "removed it for better gas milage"

Not something I particularly care about, so I would like to add it back in.

Where can I get one for a good price, and is it worth adding back in?

Best product to attach bike and kayak???

I have a 2013 Unlimited Sahara Wrangler. 3 questions:

1) is there a product that will hold a bike and kayak??? (not at same time, but separately) if so, what do you recommend? if there is not a product for both, what bike rack do you recommend?

2) what floor mats do you recommend? what is best price for durable mat with raised sides to keep in liquids?

3) if I have a premium soft top and purchased a bikini top covering front and back seats, do i have to take off the soft top or can I keep it attached and just lay it down on the back when I am using the bikini top?

TJ Auto Quick Shifting

I have a 97 TJ with what I believe is the torque flight 999. I was out wheeling today at Little Moab in Utah and got in a couple situations when I would of loved to be able to to simply slam the tranny into reverse from drive. Is there some kind of mode to the stock shifter that would allow me to go from Drive to reverse without hitting the button? But requireing the button to get to park? That way if I ever needed it I could simply push it forward quickly and the gate would stop me from hitting park? Any Info would be great!! Thanks in advance.

2002 Liberty Sport

New Jeep Owner - 2008 Liberty 4x4

Hey gang,

Just wanted to introduce myself as the newest edition to the KK Liberty family! Traded in my Chevy Cobalt for one of these bad-boys on Tuesday, and I've been absolutely smitten with it ever since. It doesn't have any bells and whistles on it, so I'm trying to browse the forums to get a good idea on what I should add on to it. As of now, a trailer hitch is my first investment.

Anyways, good to be here, expect a lot of progress pics, and cheers!

What size lift/wheels for stock 2dr Wrangler JK Sport?

I just got my Jeep a few months ago. I finally got a job to help pay for new parts and what not.

So now that the time is actually here... I'm somewhat clueless on what to do!

I know I want a 2.5" lift. What brands do y'all recommend?

Since I want the 2.5", what EXACT size rims will I need if I want 35s?

Its so confusing!

Suggestions on rim brands?

Please try to be specific as possible! I'm about to drive myself crazy trying to figure this out. :(

Soft to hard top questions

Tailgate brackets , r they needed for hard top? Jeeps with factory hard top do they have this bracket? Can I get rid of the brackets with my soft top?

Outside Mirrors

Outside rearview mirrors, came off a 2002 Wrangler Sport. The actual mirrors (glass) are useable but need replacing, as one is scratched and one is cracked. Price includes shipping. Will sell individually for $15 each, shipping included. Brackets/housings are in good shape. One is original, one a replacement. E-mail me for pix--can't upload as they are "too large", and I don't know how to make them smaller.

What's up with my EVIC and Ambient Temprature Sensor ??

Started the car for the seventh or so time today to see my EVIC slammed at 106 degrees F. It came down to 104 degrees but is jammed.

Any clue WTH is going on with it? How can I try and reset it?

First time buyer, 99 vs 02 Grand Cherokee

Hi everyone, I am about to purchase my first jeep and am attempting to curb my excitement and do my diligent research before settling on a victor. So my price limit is about 5k and so far I've found two that seem to fit the parameters of what I need:

One is a 99 GC Laredo with 115k miles, selec trac, I6, auto trans. Here is the link if it helps: http://ift.tt/1obpNUq

The other is an 02 Limited with 138k miles, quadra trac, 4.7l V8, auto trans, and some aftermarket goodies. Again, a link: http://ift.tt/1iLrPoP

My immediate concern with both jeeps is the wisdom of buying a 15 or twelve year old vehicle, and what the mileage means in terms of eithers longevity. Also, is there any distinct advantage between selec trac or quadra trac? Does the economy of the I6 offset the power of the V8? Do either have any known issues or gremlins I should look out for, and are there any specific things I should be looking for when I go look at them? I'm also curious, especially with the 02, of it having been abused in the past. As with any vehicle, I've heard heroic tales of bulletproof motors and transmissions, faultless electrics, etc; and I've heard horror stories about the same things. At the end of the day, any used vehicle purchase will have its risks, but I REALLY want a jeep!

Thank you for your insight, and forgive my long-winded nature.

Jason

Help with reason for dead battery

I have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee larado. The battery as been as been going dead for past week. I drove to advance to buy new battery but the tech checked battery & alternator & said they where fine. I have battery recharged then it done it again 2 days later. It will start if it sits no longer than 12 hrs. Ive had trouble with door lock switches & had to take bacl panel off of trunk in which I broke a connector off the defroster. Could this be it ? & also the under hood light had been staying on. I took the light off. Do I need to unhook fuse? Pls help !

Gonna run a Weber BBD on the jeep soon.

I always thought that "W" looked familiar on some of those BBD bodies.

Found proof yesterday.

Would this be called a Weber 38.1/38.1 DCVC ? :D

(DC means doppio corpo, or double-throat; V means verticale, C for Carter?)

I Know, I know, 38/38 DCVPDM. (pezzo de merda) No translation necessary. :)

post lift alignment

I am installing a 4" zone lift and am hoping to avoid paying for an alignment. steering wheel alignment seems pretty easy from what ive seen and apparently the only other thing to adjust is toe in/out. Since i got an adjustable trac bar with the lift, however, how would i go about centering the axle? thanks

Is there a decent winch mount?

So aside from going the ARB (or some other full bumper replacement) or front hitch route, does nobody make a brush guard or other type of permanent winch mount? I'd love to go the ARB route, but it's a bit expensive. I like the Warn Trans4mer but apparently they or anyone else who makes winch mounted brush guards doesn't make one for these jeeps. What's up with that?

Won't start

I need help figuring out a way to bypass my security system. First my problem is the damn thing cranks but no start. The key light with a slash going through it blinks. I've check and have no fuel pressure and I'm sure no injector pulse. I've checked all the fuses. Being a woman I've searched google and I come up with cutting a purple/yellow wire and ground it. I can't seem to find this wire. I need a wire diagram or pictures to show me where it is. On a side note I have the grey, spare keys with the keyless clicker and have tried to do the door reset. Nothing has worked for me. Can anyone help me figure this security bypass so I can drive my baby again

90 YJ 4.2 running rough after tune up

Well I got a call from my boss man saying his jeep wont start.... i get there and the filter is pulled off the dist is pushed against the block and the battery dead as a door knob.... so from no crank due to dead battery to a crank with a random spit and sputter I can get her to fire with the pedal to the ground

I have replaced

plugs, wires cap rotor and ign coil.

She will fire up, i think we might have mildly flooded the carb for tonight. plans are waiting for the day time and letting everything settle. i dont have a timing light but i have messed with enough carbs i can get a rough idea for the smooth idle just listening to her.

So i am trying to work the idle out and get her straight but even after everything done shell still run rough almost like it has a miss or two...

Tomorrow i plan to check the gap on the plugs again, check the plug wire placement and make sure i didnt skip a wire or whatever.....

does anyone have anything else?

pickup on the bottom of the dist? I dont like the way the wires plug to the ign coil the prior owner screwed it up a little and theyre a little loose. im thinking that might be affecting the power source. I really dont want to just swap parts because its not my cash flow so im trying to have a little backup before i start telling him to buy parts

Cleveland Forest Map/Info

Hey all. Today I decided to take a quick trip out to the Cleveland Forest to check it out.

I couldn't find much information on it in the forum so i figured I'd share my experience.

We went out this morning to the South side of the mountain range and decided to enter on Trabuco Canyon Road. Nice drive through a canopy of very healthy trees but nothing challenging. Just a cool drive on dirt roads through the forest... (nice to take your friends that arent as excited about rock crawling up in Big Bear).

Now I was under the impression that from that trail we would be able to access the main divide but apparently not!

At the end of that road Is "Holy Jim's" hiking trail that goes up to some sort of falls. We had to turn around a little past that trail head and come home.

At the start of "Holy Jim's" trail there was a map of the forest. I took a picture and decided I'd share it on here for others to use. Its late at night and I had nothing better to do so I "enhanced" it a tad bit to try and make it more usable for us Jeepers.

I highlighted some of the trails and made a quick key.

Anyways... I hope that helps a few people out. Thats the kind of map I was looking for when I wanted to do some exploring. Happy trail riding!

'06 Fluid Leak

vendredi 28 mars 2014

I have an '06 V6 Liberty with around 120,000 miles. This morning smoke/steam started rising from the engine compartment on my way to work. It looked as though I might have a blown radiator hose, no big deal. The serpentine belt was soaked and kept slipping, so I took it off to dry it. The moment I took it off, some sort of fluid began to just pour out onto the ground. I was in a parking garage with minimal supplies, but from what I could tell it was coming from behind the water pump pulley (which is very loose and wobbly feeling when the belt is off). The liquid was a pinkish color.

Anyone have any ideas what my problem(s) may be?

Clicking / humming at 40 mph from front end?

OK,

So I have changed both CV shafts in the front thinking my cv joints were shot well one was but I still have this weird clicking/grinding when I step on it sometimes just typical driving... sounds like a cv but both are new cv shafts are now changed! Also at 40mph I get this hum with a little vibration it goes away soon as I let go of the gas pedal and come back as soon as i give it any gas at all....

checked the U joints on the drive shaft there fine...

could this be the front drive shaft??? It has those goofy cv shafts think its called a rezepa shaft?? its about the only thing I can think of that's bad...

any help or ideas would be very helpful...

wont start, need assistance please

Ok, so my 97 cherokee 4.0 wont start. The other day i started it up, it was reving high. i checked and found ccv line off. Hooked the vacuum line back up and it killed the engine. Went to restart it with no luck. Checked distributor cap, good. checked for spark on all plugs, good. Fuel pressure holds at 46. Replaced tps, map, fuel pump was done 4 months ago, checked fuses.

Now, before it **** on me it ran a lil rough and seemed like something was taking my power away, especially when first taking off. Also it was giving me check engine light codes saying that i was misfiring in cylinders 3 & 6. but no clue whats causing all this. Oh and it only has 60k on it. Someone help

96 zj Occasional stall and hesitation.

Hi all,

I recently picked up a 96 zj 4.0 and it is my first jeep. I love it and had no problems for 2 months, then I took it to my local jeep dealership for the oil change and multi-point inspection.

I did this only for the first oil change on it so I could have the dealer look over everything so I would know of any issues. Anyway, starting after this took place it started to randomly stall or try to stall when coming to a stop and then also when I start to go it will buck, kind of like it cuts out for a second then be fine. The first night after this began I checked the wire harness going into the computer and when I pressed on it the engine would want to stall and if I lifted up on it, the engine would spool up. I thought because of this that my problem was the common issue with the computer and the harness, however the next day and every time I try to do it now nothing happens. It is still having the issue, but pushing and pulling on the harness and tapping the computer do absolutely nothing. Now I am really confused as to what the problem is.

There are no codes and no CEL present. The only other thing I notice (this has done this since I got it) when I am coasting the rpm occasionally drop and surge and it feels like engine assisted braking if that makes sense. Since it's my first jeep I thought it might be normal, but now not so sure.

Thanks guys.

Won't restart after shut off

Got home today and shut the jeep off, got my stuff out and then hit the key fob to lock the doors. Jeep didn't respond after numerous attempts, so I go to the drivers door and hit the door lock switch and still nothing. I put the key in the ignition and turn it forward, no info shows up anywhere, the guages don't move... flat out nothing.

Anyone experienced this? Also not sure if it's related or not, but I had a muffler welded on Wednesday afternoon. I googled around a bit and saw some ZJ guys saying to check the rear o2 sensor, if it got hot and grounded out that could be robbing the 5v signal to the PCM. Not sure if it applies to WJ's as well but I will investigate that. But wouldn't that have at least tripped a check engine light before I shut the vehicle off?

Thoughts?

Frame brace questions

I have a steering box brace and brace between frame rails behind front bumper. So the front end is braced well.

I have a 3/16 gas tank skid plate that I think braces rear end well enough.

I plan to install a heavier duty crossmember.

I have 30 x 9.5 R15 tires and I do mostly mild to moderate wheeling, but occasionally I get into harder stuff that twists up suspension and articulates to the limit.

Do I really need to install a brace under the beam(s) that run length of the XJ?

Driveshaft

I'm looking for a Dana 44 driveshaft out of a TJ. I swapped from a Dana 35 and mine is pretty tight.

Just purchased an 09 KK with Sky slider roof

About 80k miles on it, this is for my daughter. It was an impulse sort of thing, since we were looking at cheaper and older XJs, and then a wrangler. This Liberty was on the lot as we walked past. The Sky slider was the selling point. It works but if any one has any input on how to keep it that way it would be much appreciated. Or any thing I need to look at , for that matter. It was well maintained and I hope to keep it that way.

Does anyone else hate those "zombie response" stickers

I see these trucks, jeeps, Xterras at school with those zombie response unit stickers all over the body and it really drives me crazy. I can't be the only one. Like I can understand putting currie, jks, MC stickers on the body after you install some parts but this one just looks soo dumb in my opinion.

I'm trying to be nice about it but

1) This isn't resident evil

2) If zombies were a real thing, the last vehicle I want to be in is one with a soft top hahaha

Alternator problem: did the dealer do it?

I took my 2002 Grand Cherokee to the dealer for a recall to fix a potential air bag problem. I picked up the car and when I started it up to drive home the check gauge light came on. I saw that my amp gauge was very low. I turned off the car and tried to turn it back on and it was dead. The dealer said it was a bad alternator and it was a coincidence that it died seconds after leaving the shop.

What do you think? What are my options?

Thanks,

Passanger side front tire wearing faster

My passanger side front tire is wearing faster than the others, especially on the outside of the tire. I checked the toe in, it's between 1/16 and 1/8. I heard it can't be the camber as it's not adjustable. Could it be ball joints? TRE's? Shocks? They are all original, except for shocks which are still pretty old and showing it. Any help would be great.

Windows

My driver side window is messed up I have the plastic windows and the zipper either gets stuck or will go and then stop help please

Dana 30 owners running 35's

How many of you have actually beefed up your drive train after regearing? I'm talking axle sleeve and C gusset reinforcement, performance axles & drive shafts. Did you install lockers?

Have you any complaints with your setup, any failures?

I'm looking for real world experience, no internet utopia please!

OBA oiler

I installed Speedaire 4ZL70 oiler for my OBA however I do not think it is getting any oil. The arrow is pointed to the compressor, I filled it with compressor oil and the flow adjustor is on the max. I do not see any droplets in the sight glass and the level does not go down after I ran it for 5 minutes. Im lost does anyone have any ideas, what I may be missing?

Gears, Lockers, So many threads....

Now that I have my lift, steering, tires, wheels Id like to delve into the driveline. I want to do a regear and purchase a locker for the rear. Ive read and read on lockers and gears. I'm basing my gear ratio on the chart (tire size vs ratio) and others opinions. I'm going to go with 4.11 as I am running 33" tires. I need to update the profile. A locking differential is next. I am looking at selectables and LSD's. For now I want to just do a rear LSD. Now, I have three simple questions:

1) The gears dont need to be replaced after the locker goes in correct? I am going to regear prior to the locker. I know that the locker is gear dependent, but most are either 3.73 and lower or 3.73 and higher so I figure I should be in the clear to regear prior to the locker.

2) What is the experience you all have on LSD's? Right now it looks like the Detroit Truetrac or Soft Locker are leading the pack.

3) This question is ridiculous, but it is fine to run just a rear locker correct? I cant imagine it wouldnt be.

Thanks, and play nice!

Sunroof Assembly

Anyone have any pictures of their sunroof assembly on a 2006 Laredo? I have a leak in mine and have stuck my head through the sun roof on several occasions to see where the water starts to leak.

Im looking for pictures of the tracks, seals, according seals on the left and right sides, and the front area of the sunroof where the drain tubes are supposed to be.

05 Rubicon security key

My Rubicon has a security key that sometimes fails while driving, anyone else have this problem that has fixed it?

Mystery Coolant Leak?

Hey everyone,

All of sudden I started leaking coolant (a lot of coolant) from what seems to be around the oil pan bolts. Recently I changed my valve cover gasket and had to remove 2 of the coolant hoses. My first thought was that it was leaking from there. I looked around and couldn't see anything leaking from the hoses. It was night time and vision was limited but still seemed dry enough for the amount that was leaking. If I blew a head gasket or cracked a head would the coolant that is mixing with the oil be discolored or completely green. There is zero discoloration of the coolant dripping and on the ground. It is pure green.

Oil Filters

I use Mopar . But too funny

How to convince parents to get a TJ?

jeudi 27 mars 2014

Hi everyone, so I've had my wj for about a year now, and I have decided I want to sell it, and buy a tj. I know I'll be giving up lots of comforts but I've already made the decision. But I'm 16, and my parents don't think its such a great idea, just because I would need a lot of money to find one with low miles/in good shape. Around here the first couple year models 97 98 99 go for around 5-6k with over 150,000 miles on them. I would be getting the 4.0 and I know that its a very reliable engine, and I've read they easily outlast the vehicle if well cared for. But my parents never really like to buy used vehicles, and my dad is a car guy so he knows what to look for. So give me some reasons that 150,000 miles isn't too high miles, compared to my wj with 180k. I know as long as its in good shape and has been well cared for, it should last much longer and be a good vehicle, I just need to get my parents to believe this.

Thanks!

Rear Ring and Pinion '98 TSi

I BELIEVE I've got the Dana 35 with 3.55 gear ratio (will have to call the dealer and verify this with the VIN). The pinion has pretty bad play in it (I can wiggle it by grabbing the drive shaft) and it howls on decel. I've opened the cover and confirmed this by the wear pattern on the ring gear. Had a good amount of metal shavings in the fluid. I put the cover back on and filled it with fresh gear oil. Now just trying to decide what route I need to take to rectify the situation.

Should I change the ring and pinion gears (along with all required bearings and seals)? Or can I get away with changing the bearing kit on the pinion?

AND does the pinion have a crush sleeve or will it need shimmed? I cannot find clear answers on this.

Thanks in advance for any input you guys have!!!

max tire size vs horsepower

Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ air intake

I want to buy an intake for my Jeep, preferably a K&N but open to other intakes for the right price. I have a 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 4.7 V8.

Zj stalling

Starts and runs for few seconds then dies. Starts right back up and stays running. Cleaned throttle body and IAC. Battery connections are good, clean and tight.

Any ideas?
