Driving without front drive shaft. how to replace u joints

I have a 01 wj with the v8 and quadra track two. The u joints on the front drive shaft were getting bad. Is there any harm to drive without the front drive shaft for a while? And I am looking into replacing all three u joints but I guess there is a ball and seat in the double u joint that is tricky to do. Should I just have a shop do it? Has any one did it on there own? Thanks
