Steering box adjustment question

lundi 24 mars 2014

When I was still in high school my steering got to feeling a little loose after a couple of years of driving my Jeep. So my dad checked it and said all my linkages and shafts and everything was tight and that my steering box just needed a little of the slack adjusted out of the gears inside. He had me pull into the flat surface in our carport and cehter the wheel then he loosened the lock nut on the steering box so he could move the center bolt and then had me gently rock the steering wheel back and fourth as he tightened the center bolt a little and then re tightened the lock but and my steering has felt good all these years.

So now all these years later it feels like it needs it again. We checked it and everything else is tight, all the joints are good, shaft couplings and bolts all tight, etc. so I'm assuming it needs that same procedure done again.

The guys in the shop here are familiar with the procedure at least as much as I am but just like me they don't know exactly how far you're supposed to turn the center bolt. They have see older mechanics do it in the past but don't know if you count turns or are trying to feel for something specific or how you know when you have done it far enough.

Can someone here help? How do you know how far to adjust the center nut?
