1996 XJ Sport Shifting Problems!!!

dimanche 15 juin 2014

Hi All!

I recently joined the forum because I have been having some big issues with my automatic 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport. I have always used this forum for help, just never posted or signed up. I don't know everything about cars I know enough to get myself out of trouble and save some cash. I am confident that I can fix the problem and teach myself I just need help with diagnosing. Problems started when my lo beams were not working. Took out headlight switch and replaced but it didn't help. Then I took lights apart and found out it was the connectors and fixed that problem. Definitely felt like an idiot for doing all the work to find it was something that simple. After driving around for a little I noticed my car was doing some funny things and CEL came on.

OBD SCANNER:

CEL came on and plugged my scanner in and code P0123 which is TPS sensor high output. I changed the TPS and cleared all the codes. Didn't seem to fix my problem. After the car was on for a little CEL came on again code was P0108 which is MAP pressure high output. I checked the MAP sensor and it seems to be good and cleared codes again. Started the car again code p1297 popped up which is no change in MAP sensor voltage. After this 3rd code popped up I was a little suspicious because I feel it is just throwing out all this codes. I cleared the codes again and nothing has popped up since. Also when I try to run the transmission check through scanner it states the test is not supported, but my car is OBD2 supported. Also I have noticed that when I do plug the scanner in it intermittently will lose connection, but I am able to achieve a connection when I try again.

CAR SYMPTOMS:

When I turn the car on RPM's are around 800-900 range. Then when I put the car in drive the RPM's go way low 400-500 and the car starts shuddering & vibrating and most times will stall out especially if I push down on gas pedal. This happens when I stop at stop light as well. I have also noticed when I do floor the gas pedal there is hardly any acceleration. I had my Dad drive it and he says it is stuck in 3rd gear or in "limp mode" and parked it. We tried manually shifting but it didn't seem to be changing gears. Car is able to reverse and acts fine in park and in neutral - problem only happens when I put car in D or other gears. I also noticed that there is a hollowing noise coming from my stock air filter box - but this did not happen until I started trying to fix some things. I feel like I try to fix some things, but end up making more work for myself LOL.

I was thinking bad shift solenoids, TCM, but I don't want to start replacing things or take an ATF bath until I know for sure. I have tried unplugging the negative battery cable so that everything could reset, but it didn't help. I checked the connection to TCM and wiring around plug, but everything seemed good. Checked for vacuum leaks. Changed TPS and cleaned out IAC. I heard there was a fuse to TCM, but I cannot seem to find it near the module or in fuse box under the hood. Also just changed serpentine belt because it was starting to crack. Again no codes have popped up since I cleared all codes.

Sorry for the long post I am just trying to be as detailed as I can because symptoms could all be related. Please help me fix this problem because I have been out of a car for about a week and it sucks not being able to Jeep around. I love my Jeep and we have been through a lot and would hate to get rid of it over an easy fix. Thanks in advanced!
