98 4.0 AW4, tcase is out of a wrecked 99 xj.
Okay so last week I finished up my 231->242 swap. Test drove it for about 45 minutes mostly in 2wd just to make sure I had no vibes and nothing blew up. also did a quick function check for 4pt, 4ft, and 4lo.
Today was the first extended 4FT test. Drove it about 15 miles @40mph in 4FT and there may have been a slight metal burning smell. I say "may have been" because it was so faint it literally might have been all in my head, or it may have been the heater burning off the summer dust since today was the first time I ran the heater. There was also a small bit of driveline noise when i switched into 4FT but I seem to recall that being normal in my other 242 XJs. Almost like a bad bearing? Maybe? Hard to describe.
When I got home, I crawled under and put my hand on the tcase, the front output, and the rear output. The front and the tcase near the front output were about 20-30 degrees warmer than the rear output. Not "ow I burned my hand" hot, but noticeably warmer.
So is that normal? I honestly never checked on my previous two np242s.
