Fixing the pinion seal the PROPER way?

mercredi 5 novembre 2014

I'm thinking about fixing my leaking pinion seals, and I'd want to do it properly. Two main questions...

1. Do you have to pull the axle shafts before measuring the rotational torque? The FSM does not mention needing to do this, but various internet sources say you should.

2. I know you're supposed to use a new pinion nut, but what about the crush sleeve? Is it mandatory to replace it, or only if you over-tighten the pinion nut? I can't actually see anything in the parts catalog called a crush sleeve. There's something called a pinion spacer, but that sits between two bearings.
