2001 grand cherokee, 4.7l v8, 120k miles. 2 days ago i started hearing a very slight tick noise coming from engine, I pulled over, checked the oil (was about 1/2qt) low, and filled engine oil. While driving the jeep back to the house the tick was still there and getting louder. I drove it today to the parts store to get a new oil, filter, and lucas oil treatment just to see if it helps. 3/4 of the way to the store the ticking got really loud, turned around and headed home.
When starting up the jeep, the tick is extremly loud and then settles down but still pretty loud. Tick sound is coming from both pass. and driver side rear valve covers. I pulled plug wires on each cylinder and tick was still there (an old trick to find engine noise by cylinder). Listened thru stephoscope and ticking noise is coming from rear valve covers. Sound is more prominent on passsanger side, dont know if its echoing to driver side, but you can hear it on driver side as well.
Anyone had this problem or know of any good conclusions to jump too before taking off valve covers and digging into the head.
Also jeep oil pressure is running 55-60, not overheating, engine idle is good, compression test has not been done but no lack of power.
Thanks,cam
