2014 Grand Cherokee HVAC Recirculation. Tell me if this is by design, or defect.

lundi 3 août 2015

Hello Everyone,

I have a 2014 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 that I am crazy about, and is the 3rd Jeep I have owned. I purchased the Jeep in August of 2013 for my wife. I traded another vehicle off in February 2015, got my wife a new vehicle, and started driving the Grand Cherokee full time. Previously, I only drove it on weekends. This summer has been a lot warmer than last year's, in the Houston Texas area.

Here is the anomaly I am experiencing: I just noticed in early July, about the time it got really hot, that my Air Conditioning recirculation door started closing, even though I had it turned off (and in manual, non-auto mode). When i first turn on the A/C (with recirculate off), the recirc door closes. If I turn the recirc on, and the off again, then the recirc door will open.

Last month, I decided to take it into the dealer to finally get my 5 recall items done. I explained to the service advisor what was going on. I knew it would be difficult to explain, so I showed him. It took a while for him to understand it, and I feared that my description of the issue would get lost in translation when my car went to the Tech. At first, I was told that the tech could not duplicate the problem, so I went back there myself and showed the tech. I also insisted that they perform the software flash update for the Tech Service Bulletin (24-003-14 REV. A,http://ift.tt/1gEm6oM ), because last winter, I thought that the HVAC was blowing warmer air than outside (when using vent only, temp set on lowest setting, heater core should not be used). They did the software flash for me.

When I picked the car up (without noting current outside temp at the time), the HVAC was performing as it should (recirc door does not close unless you turn on recirc). Shortly after (when stopping at a store on the way home), it starts doing it again.

I took my Jeep back to the dealer, and they took another look. I told them that I suspected that the actuator on the recirculation door was bad. The dealer tells me that they opened a Chrysler Star Case, and that a technician told them that this is normal behavior as designed (without giving any additional info). My dealer also said that they tested another 2014, and that it exhibited the same behavior.

So my question is this: If you have your HVAC in manual (non-auto), a/c on, and recirculation off, is it designed to close the recirc door even when the setting is turned off under certain conditions? Temperature threshold, perhaps? This does not seem normal to me. And I cannot find anything online (or with the dealer, and anyone with Chrysler) that can answer this.

To date, I have not found anyone else experiencing this, and there is no Tech Service bulletin.

Anyone else with a 2014 (and in a hot area) experiencing this? My model is a Laredo, with a UCONNECT 5.0, if that matters.
