Grand Cherokee 2.7 CRD

Re: U.K. registered 2002 Grand Cherokee Limited 2.7 CRD fuel tank.

I have a problem, in that if I fill my fuel tank I lose a fair amount of fuel. I can't help thinking that this probably due to a leak from the filler pipe or the breather pipe, or both. I don't lose any if I fill a gallon or so short of full.

Question is, is it possible to access the filler pipe from above, i.e. through the floor of the boot, or does one have to remove the tank? I've tried getting through to it via the LH rear wheel arch with the wheel removed, but there just doesn't seem to be sufficient space. Certainly not enough to access the filler pipe and replace it, or even to tighten the clip.

There seems to be a panel, or maybe it is only sound damping material, on the top of the inner wheel arch, but I am reluctant to rip out all the carpeting if there is no access there.

Has anybody had to replace a filler pipe on this model? If so, how did you do it?

Thanks in advance.

Tony Norton
