Avital 4103LX/DBALL2 Installation Write-Up

I was debating posting this in the Remote Start & Keyless Entry ... VERY EASY! thread but since it was suggested to make a new thread and because I have a ton of pictures, I figured I’d start a new thread. Massive amounts of thanks are due to ducatiguynyc and everyone in the previously mentioned thread. I will link my Write-Up in his thread so the discussion can continue. I also want to thank ezflip for talking me through some of the troubleshooting.



First off, this is what I ordered:



XpressKit DBALL2 Databus All Combo Bypass Module - $47.26

Directed Electronics Inc XKLOADER2 XpressKit - $26.00

Avital 4103LX Remote Start System with Two 4-Button Remote - $41.36



Grand Total: $114.62



The XKLOADER2 is needed to install the firmware on the DBALL2. The DBALL2 comes 'empty' and needs vehicle specific information loaded on it. Without that tool, you have to find someone who can load the firmware for you. For $26, it's worth the convenience to me. Added benefits are that I'll be able to update/change it if I ever need. I'll have it on hand for future purchases or to set one up for someone else as well. Keep in mind, this isn’t necessary if you have someone else load the firmware on the DBALL2.



If you do decide to load your own firmware, it’s pretty straight forward. Follow the computer installation instructions that come with the XKLOADER2 then visit XpressKit’s Website. Use their “Find a system that fits your vehicle” tool and install the necessary firmware for your system. For my DBALL2 and at the time of this writing, I installed 402.CHRYSLER2 V2.02.01.



Next up, we have the unboxing. To be honest, at first I was a little confused staring at everything in the box. I was also a little overwhelmed. Let me point out, you will NOT use all of the wires. That being said, here are some labeled pictures of the Avital 4103LX and DBALL2.

Looks like a lot, huh? Here is a picture of the wiring connections. Again, I feel I must thank ducatiguynyc for doing the initial Write-Up as well as Bellator50 for his post HERE. I looked over some wiring diagrams and added a little extra as well. While these may not be necessary, I figured “why not”.







Color coded version:



DBALL H10/9 (Pink ) – Avital H1/3 (Yellow )

DBALL H14/2 (Violet /Yellow ) – Jeep OBDII Pin 2

DBALL H14/9 (Orange /Yellow ) – Jeep Immobilizer Pin 3 (Dark Blue /White ) – Immobilizer Side

DBALL H14/8 (Yellow ) – Jeep Immobilizer Pin 3 (Dark Blue /White ) – Car Side

DBALL H12/9 & 8 (Violet /Green , Violet /Brown ) – Jeep Headlight Switch Pin 11 (Yellow )

Avital H2/4 (Red ) – Jeep Ignition Switch (Red )

Avital H2/6 (Red ) – Jeep Ignition Switch (Red )

Avital H2/1 (Pink ) – Jeep Ignition Switch (Dark Blue )

Plug in the extended range antenna to the Avital unit. Route and install in an appropriate location.



Plug in the valet / programming button to the Avital unit. Route and install in an appropriate location.

OK – Let’s get to it!



First off, disconnect the battery!



You’re about to hack into some pretty sensitive wiring. The last thing you need is to get shocked or short something out.

Anyway, I started by soldering up all of the external wiring (Avital to DBALL2). Things can get messy when doing this. Take your time and try not to do this:







Once you have these connections soldered, heat shrinked (shrunked… shrinkeded? I’ve heard it both ways), and marked off your list, it’s time to move to the vehicle.

In the vehicle, pop off the cover to the OBDII Port:











Remove the two 10mm bolts in the picture above as well as the Phillips screw in the side of the panel where the door contacts:







Pop off the cover in front of the gauge cluster and remove the two Phillips screws holding the top portion of the bottom kick panel on. You can see one in the picture above. The other is located on the right side of the steering column.



Wow - I really need to clean the jeep...

The kick panel can now be removed. Follow this by removing the Phillips screw holding the steering column cover in place.







The cover will then pop off.







Now we have room to work.

I first decided to make the splice at the OBDII port (Pin 2). To make things easy, I unbolted the port connector from the bracket. I used a 1/4” wrench here, though I think it’s metric. Don’t hit me with sticks.







Here we see Pin 2 is Yellow /Violet . Sorry – it’s a little blurry…







To make a proper connection, pull back the covering, strip back some insulation, open the wiring, and poke the new wire into the hole. Wrap these wires together, solder, then wrap with electrical tape.
