I recently put a new set of wheels on, previous ones being 235/75/15, current ones being 265/75/15. The tires and rims were both used. I had them mounted at a good shop, I watched the mechanic do them and he balanced them properly. (One wheel took a lot of weights, but I put that one on the back) I installed the wheels myself and torqued them properly. The jeep's suspension is totally stock.
Now, when I'm driving and I hit a bump, sometimes I get quite a strong "back and forth" shimmy for a couple seconds after the bump. It happens at pretty well any speed, but it is more noticeable at faster speeds. It's not full on DW as I don't have to slow down and it isn't THAT violent, but it tugs the wheel back and forth fairly strongly, enough that it is definitely noticeable. It never lasts for more than a couple seconds after the bumps, but certain bumps seem to trigger a stronger wobble than others.
Could improperly balanced wheels do this? I could have lost a weight or two off one of the wheels. I plan on re-balancing them myself just to be sure.
Is this an unhealthy wobble, or is this normal? I definitely never really noticed it with the old wheels, but it could be that the taller/fatter tire and heavier wheel amplifies the feeling to a point where it's noticeable.
The steering box is leaking quite a bit, but I keep it topped up. There seems to be a bit of play in it, when the jeep is off and it's in the air, you can turn the wheels by hand and there seems to be a bit of play, no more than 3-4mm in the steering box. Is this normal, and could this cause my wobble?
I'm going to give the front end a good check, is there anywhere in particular I should pay special attention to, that could cause the problem I'm having?
Any help would be appreciated.
