Can Bad Tires Cause Noise in Transfer Case?

lundi 8 septembre 2014

About a month ago I purchased a '04 Grand Cherokee (4.0L) with 120k miles. I took it into my mechanic to have the shocks replaced and I asked him to investigate some noise I was hearing, which I mainly associated to the beefy Goodyear Wrangler LT tires with aggressive tread that came with the jeep. The tires were a little cupped from having bad shocks on the vehicle. My mechanic put the jeep on the rack and ran the wheels. He reported that one of the tires was very wobbly and suspected the belt had separated from the tread. He also said that the transfer case (SelecTrac 242J) was making a loud humming/vibration noise and needed to be rebuilt, which would cost around $1,000.

I had all four shocks replaced but I put off rebuilding the transfer case because my finances are tight. After purchasing new tires (Hankook DynaPro ATM P225/75R16) and replacing the shocks (Monroe Sensa-Trac), the jeep sounds like an entirely new vehicle. I took it back to my mechanic a week later and told him about the improvement. He put the jeep back up on the rack and reported that the humming/whining noise from the transfer case was significantly reduced, even in 4WD and he no longer recommended rebuilding it. My mechanic also said that he had a similar situation the same week with a Jeep Liberty which had him boggled. I did have the transfer case fluid replaced. Can anyone offer any insight into this situation?

Aside from the transfer case/tire issue, I am noticing a few other quirks with the jeep.

-When I turn on the windshield wipers, the delayed/time interval settings get stuck and only the continuous (slow and fast) settings work. Whenever I turn off the wipers, they stop immediately so I have to time when I turn them off to get them in the down position.

-The cruise control light turns on but I can't "set" my speed

-Every so often when starting the car, the gas gauge gets stuck on empty and tells me I'm out of gas (although I know I'm not). A few hours later, or the next day when I start the car again, the gas gauge starts working again. I know faulty gas gauges are a classic jeep issue.

Any information you can provide about the transfer case/tire issue or these other intermittent electrical issues will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to read through this post and helping me solve these problems. Much appreciated.
