What is the Best Choice of Engine for Conversion for 89 YJ

mercredi 11 mars 2015

I recently bought another YJ for a father and sons project with my twin 15/y/o boys.

It has great bones but the engine was supposedly rebuilt but all there is is the engine with no ancillary items such as intake manifold, carburetor, Harmonic balancer, vacuum lines, alternator and brackets etc.

I am considering several options such as:

1. Getting another 4.2 carborated engine and transferring all the assemblies 2. Replacing the engine with one like it

3. Replacing the motor with a 4.3 V6 (carborated which we have)

4. Getting a 4.0 MPI engine out of a later model (94 or so) Cherokee with Auto trans etc.

My question for those on this forum is what would be the best choice to end up with a reliable engine that would be good (decent) on gas and enable somebody like myself with some mechanical abilities and tools (welding, etc.) but lacking mechanical knowledge (I'm a body and paint guy)

What is the best (optimum) solution that we should be seeking to get this running and being happy with the results? We will likely be putting A/C due to being in Florida.

Thanks for any recommendations, links or information to help us make the right choices.

Barrett
