Owning both an XJ and TJ? Good or Bad Idea?

jeudi 1 mai 2014

Currently, I drive a 2006 TJ with 60K in excellent condition, bought it in 2011 with 36k, and it's been a fun, reliable, and cool daily-driver for the past three years. It's on the stock suspension (except shocks) with some mods but requires a lot of preventative maintenance to keep it perfect, can be a bit *fincky* as typical with wranglers, and managing the dual tops creates issues. I love and need both tops, especially the hardtop in the winter for the tailgate access since I constantly unload/load guitar equipment in it during the winter. Storing the hardtop though means I have to live somewhere where I can store it generally, which I do currently but won't be for long and the quotes I have for self-storage cost more than the top itself in six months time. The other big issue is keeping the TJ rust-free and clean, which it is now but even with preventative-maintenance, who knows how the frame will look in a few years of hard winter use.

Recently though, my dad bought a new car and is looking to sell his 99 XJ, which he bought new and I've known and worked on for many years. It's in good condition overall with 187k (mostly easy highway driving as he drove up and down the east coast for work for years), few minor issues like a bad valve cover gasket, fan for the AC/heat controls only works on 4, needs a passenger door switch (power locks don't work right), needs an exhaust hanger for the tail pipe, and could use some seat covers. Runs/Drives 100%, handles/steers great, and looks great for it's age as I can tell as it's at my house already since he doesn't have off-street parking for two cars where he lives. This would be a winter beater/backup/band-mobile so I can enjoy the TJ more as a toy, not a daily-driver. The TJ is paid off and my insurance will be affordable even with two vehicles as I'm moving outside the city soon.

I said I'll give him $2k but no more and he's fine with that if I want to buy it. I know it's not going to last forever but I figured since my TJ is in such good shape, worse comes to worse I dump it it if it becomes problematic and go back to dd'ing the TJ again. Opinions, good deal or bad idea? Here's the Jeep in question, my TJ is behind it from pics I took the other week:
