Starting last Sunday I had a problem where I couldn't get the jeep to start. I jumped it off and let it run for a few min but when I tried to start it again it wouldn't do anything. I took the battery cables off and cleaned them and tightened them back down and it worked fine after that. I drove it again on Tuesday and had no problems, all the gauges working as they should, everything normal.
Thursday morning I tried to start it but it wouldn't turn over again. I waiting until yesterday to work on it. Again took the battery cable off and cleaned it up some more and it fired right up. I had already checked the battery with a multimeter and it was showing 12.6v. I just drove it down the street for a few min and noticed the gauge in the dash showing it down around 9v, usually runs between 12 and 14 depending on if I have the AC on or not. By the time I got to where I was going it was reading 0 so I turned around and headed home. The engine died just as I pulled up to the house. Checked the battery and it was down to .97v
Normally I would automatically think the alternator just went bad, but I checked the 50A fuse in the fuse block next to the battery, it was blown. I just went to the parts store and got another one, jumped the jeep off and again the gauge was showing below 10v and started getting lower. I checked the battery while it was running and it was up to 11.5v but was starting to drop. The gauge was starting to drop closer to 0 again, I checked with my meter at where the cable comes from out of the fuse block and back to the battery, .2v. After I turned it off I checked the fuse and it is blown again.
Could the alternator just be bad and causing the fuse to blow as it runs? Seems to be more of a gradual thing over a few min instead of an instant blow as soon as power is applied. What else is in line there from the alternator to the battery that could possibly cause this? I don't want to put the money into another alternator just to find it is something else that is causing this.
