Transmission Swap Behind 2003 2.4L PowerTech

This past weekend my NV1500's tail housing mounting plate cracked off and left my transfer case just sitting on the skid plate. My original 2003 2.4L threw a rod at 178,000 miles last year and my parents agreed to pay for a full engine replacement if they got a nice warranty and I kept with a stock engine, so we decided to forgo a swap to a V8 or I6 at that time - but it leaves me in quite the predicament as my new 2.4L engine only has 7k miles on it and I need to hold on to it for some time. I also want to stay with a manual transmission.



I have been researching the 2.4L bolt pattern, NV1500 bell housing and it's 19 spline input shaft and have been trying to find a potential transmission upgrade that I could bolt in as I want to go with a stronger engine for a future LSx upgrade, possibly the NV3550, NSG370, or even the AX-15. I refuse to make the same mistake by spending money to rebuild and fix the pos Nv1500 to put the same weak and terrible stock 4 banger drivetrain parts back into my TJ.



Luckly jeep decided to use a NP231 with a 23 spline input shaft on the NV1500 so that won't be of issue, but what options are available for transmissions?

Here states that the NV3550 and NV1500 share the same bolt pattern connecting the bell housing, so I would use the NV1500 bell housing that I have and would only need to find a way to get the shaft length and spline count to match up? (http://ift.tt/1oK9BUY).



I've recently come across that the 2.4L TJ's around 2006 came with the NSG370 but that it's not a very strong transmission to keep if I plan on moving to a V8 later on. But it would in fact mate to my 2003 2.4L..? Thoughts?

Saw the 1992 NV4500 dodge used a 19 spline input shaft that might mate to my engine but no details on bell housing.

I'm not sure what type of bolt pattern my 2.4L uses and what type of bell housing would attach to it, and if it's possible to swap clutch assemblies to use a different spline count?

There's been a lot of confusion clouding my research and I'd like to clear the air to gain a better understanding of what's available.



The only true issue that I see is the difference in spline count that the 2.4L uses which is 19 and bell housing bolt patterns. Is the spline count something that can be changed just by swapping in a different clutch assembly, or will a new flywheel be needed? I'm fairly inexperienced in mating different driveline parts so any and all help would be greatly appreciated!!



Ideally, I'd like to narrow down exactly what manual transnmission would be the least effort to install in terms of trying to stay with the same line of parts. I.E., bolting a newer model NSG370 directly to the engine, or bolting an AX-15 with its original bell housing and possibly swapping in the 4.0 clutch assembly to get the splines to match up? Using different brand bell housing, clutch assembly, and transmission is something that I'd like to stay away from but will take it into consideration if it seems feasible. I personally would love to run the NV3550 but I don't have any info on how this could be done. I've only got one shot at this and can't afford to purchase a part that won't fit!
