Single cylinder oil fouling

samedi 1 août 2015

So I've been recently beginning to restore my "new" '79 CJ7 Golden Eagle and I have brought it from a state of not running for about 3 years to drivable. I have gotten it to the point where it will fairly reliably idle at 600rpm. This is a HUGE improvement over how it has run ever since about 6 years ago.

Yesterday I decided to replace the spark plugs since the engine still ran a bit erratic. When I pulled the first two cylinders, the plugs looked great. The third cylinder came out with a thick coating of oil and some sediments bridging across the electrodes. I first thought that it just was not arcing. I picked up some new autolite coppers and replaced all 6. Within about five minutes of idling it, The plug began to develop a blackish/brown coating on one side of the insulator/electrode. I checked every other plug and they looked fine. I did run it on the road fairly aggressively after swapping plugs 2 and 3. I checked it once i got back and the 3rd cylinder plug looked fine.

I'm not sure if I should worry about this at all since road testing cleared the deposits right up. It just didn't seem right to me that only one cylinder would have this problem. It's making me think I have a valve/ lifter issue.
