Stopping a Leaking Coolant Bleed Valve for Good

samedi 29 août 2015

While getting the engine up to temp after a coolant flush, the bleed valve started bubbling coolant through the threads on the plug. After incrementally tightening the plug further and failing to stop the bubbling, the engine was shut off to cool. The extra tightening of the steel plug in the hot aluminum pump housing unfortunately caused galling, ruining the threads.

Threads on this forum suggest the lack of a good seal at the valve is a common problem on the 4.7. Time to fix for good.

The old threads were drilled out with a 45/64" bit.

The new hole was tapped with a 1/2" NPT tap.

A stainless steel 1/2"NPT x 1/4"NPT adapter was installed using Gripp on the threads.

A stainless steel 1/4"NPT socket head plug was wrapped in teflon tape and installed into the adapter.

No more leaks.
