Looking for a little advise on an engine swap, 1986 CJ7, 258 IL6, T176 Tranny, Dana 300 TC, Dana 20 RA with 3.31 ratio.
I have come to the realization that whatever one does to this motor it will always be a pig and whatever you do to it will cost you big dollars with little HP gains for your investment.
Looking at swapping in a Chevy performance crate motor SB350 rated at 290Hp with carb, I have talked to Novak and everything seems pretty straight forward as far as the installation goes but I have a few questions for those who have done this swap.
Will I have to move the current location of my transmission/drive train forward for the motor to clear the firewall? Guy at Novak said It should work in stock location but I wanted to hear it from someone who has did it. I have a 1 body lift. Not really a big deal to do this but I like to plan ahead for things like a shorter front drive shaft and a longer rear driveshaft, shifter location, etc...
Thinking of going with the hydraulic clutch on this swap, just seems a lot simpler, any suggestions?.
What clutch/flywheel/bell housing size did you go with and why?.
Going to have my local shop go through the tranny and TC, (bearings, seals, etc ) any recommendations on whos kits I should buy? (no problems with these, just thought it would be a good time to do it.)
Going with one piece axles, any recommendations?
Will my current AC/Delco alternator work ok with this or should I upgrade this also?
Can someone point me in the right direction for hooking up the water temp and oil pressure gages? I would like to keep the stock gages if possible.
Is it a good idea to go with an electric radiator fan or will a regular setup work okay?
Things I know I have to change: power steering hoses, radiator, fuel lines, motor mounts, exhaust, trans/adapter, bellhousing, clutch kit, flywheel, What am I missing?
This jeep is running 35 BFG AT tires with a 4 super lift, 1 body lift and 1/2 shackle lift, going to wait on changing gear ratios until I see how it performs with new motor.
This jeep is currently computer/emission free and running a MC2150 with a HEI Dizzy.
Thanks for any all help you can give.
