"The Tick" after an overheat 4.7, head gaskets

jeudi 17 juillet 2014

Hey all , not posted in a long time.

Has been great jeep, until the last couple of months when I started to notice it eating ( not leaking) coolant.

Started to do some recon, and figured it was a bad head gasket. Currently have 200K or 130 miles on her.

All was going to plan until she left me overheated. It got hot, but shut is down before melting stuff ;)

Went from sipping a lil coolant to gulping and running hot. Lesson learned, if it is burning it deal with it sooner than later.

To my problem, I now have the notorious top end tick, and never had it before.

Before starting the job, did a lot of reading on what else could have gone on and what I need to do while in there. My experience was telling me, a bad head gasket or a cracked head. Pictures show gasket failure , drivers side.

Heads were sent to a machine shop. Good guys, they have done a few motors for me on other projects.

Inspected valve seats, look for cracks etc, was a bit worried after getting hot with aluminum.

Resurfaced the heads and exhaust side ports. Also resurfaced the exhaust manifolds. It was clear I was about to have an exhaust leak on the drivers side. They also did the seats, valves surfaces and new valve seals in.

Also seeing all the threads about the top end tick, and the rockers coming off. Decide with the age I'd also slip new valve adjusts/ lashers in.

My motor had the 30 second tick before, always run good oil and changed often. Taking the top end apart was no sludge.

I read a few threads about soaking the lifters or not, and decided they would pump up quick. Gave them a few pumps in oil before assembly.

The old one's were junk and can see why this design would clog and stick and rather replace than take them apart for cleaning.

So bolt her all back together, and now I have a tick! grrr.

I hate motor noises, that just drives me batty.

I'm confidant the heads and seal are fine. Overheating is gone, no leaks, no eating fluids..

I was sure putting new lifters in would be wise. The noise is definitely top end.

I seen Thomahawks thread on the loose cam lobe. Something happen to the cam when the motor got hot? I shut it off as it was nearing red and towed home. I've never seen a cam separate like his.

Did I prep my lifters incorrectly? Was I wrong to assume they would fill quickly.?

I have 30 minutes on it after an oil change. Subtle tick at idle, the tick follows rpm, and definitely in the valve train area and not an exhaust leak.

Will be pulling the driver side valve cover off shortly.

I miss anything?
