Hey folks. I've searched around but haven't seen anything that fits my problem. '96 ZJ 4.0 Laredo auto trans. I was out doing some very light wheeling today (just cruising dirt roads, never used 4wd) and found that the trans wouldn't shift up when it was hot. It was a very warm day, in the 90s. The road had some steep grades and a lot of twist and turns, so the trans was shifting a lot.
I would be cruising at 20 or so at 2k rpm, but when I accelerated it would just rev higher. The first time it did this, it eventually shifted on its own and was fine for a while. The second time, it kept up until I stopped for about 15 minutes. It then behaved normally as I descended about 20 miles (using engine braking), and was perfect on the highway home.
It did this once before at the end of a long trip in hot weather that ended in a steep, twisty climb on pavement. It resolved itself after I shifted into neutral and back to drive.
My question is, does this seem like something I can fix or am I looking at a new transmission soon? The fluid is fairly new and looks good, no discoloration. Level is good (tested after I got back, so it was still plenty hot). I haven't looked at the bands because frankly it kind of intimidates me even though I'm reasonably competent with mechanics. Could it just need a band adjustment? Thanks for any help you folks can provide.
