2002 Liberty Stalling

I get a call from my son the other day. He's stuck in a parking lot and the KJ won't budge. By the time I get there he and his buddy pushed it out of traffic into a space. "What's wrong with it?" "It won't start or go Dad". "Try starting it..." It starts right up. I say let's limp it home. At the first stop light it dies again. I am right behind up, run up and he's trying to start it but whenever he lets it go to idle it dies. I tell him to keep one foot on the gas and one on the brake and keep going.



When we got it home, I found the return hose from the EGR to the air intake was cracked, but taped up. I may have done that in then past and forgotten about it. So I retaped it and put a hose clamp on it. Did nothing. Since it had been cold, I dumped in some gas line antifreeze and some injector cleaner, then sat in the Jeep running the engine at 2000RPM for about 10 minutes. After that, the problem disappeared.



Looking at this and other forums, one thing that also jumped out at me was the battery. Apparently even slightly low voltages can give KJ's fits, so I put the big charger on it for a couple hours until it indicated full charge. We have not seen the issue since.



I'm concerned I just got lucky with my "fixes". Thoughts on what might cause this?
