32" Tires w/ a 42RLE what axle gearing?

vendredi 28 août 2015

I've spent the day reading up on ratios and checking out the gearing calculators and my eyes are crossed. I was running 31" BFGs with my 3.73 Dana 44 (2005 LJ) as a DD and was pretty happy with the performance on the interstate and dirt roads. When it was time to change the tires I got some wild hair up my butt and went to a 32" BFG and dang, I didn't expect such a degraded performance.

Instead of selling my brand new 32s" and going back to 31s" I'm now considering a gear change. The calculators are telling me a 3.93 or 4.10 would put me back about where I was. Then I called the local Fortec Jeep shop and the guy is trying to sell me on jumping to 4.56 gears.

But it looks like I'll be running over 3000 RPS at 70mph+ which is where this jeep spends most of its time running back and forth to the hunting club.

I know I won't see a big jump in performance with a 4.10 change but I don't really want a BIG jump. I just want to be able to use my OD on the interstate and drive the dirt roads at my hunting club. I do (or did) pull a 2000lb boat with my old combination (31s" and 3.73) just fine and I think a 4.10 would work as well.

I'm never going to put 33s on this Jeep and I'm afraid that if I go to 4.56, I'll never be able to go back down to a 31" tire.

Is there an option between 4.10 and 4.56? I've seen mention of a 4.27 but then also said where it won't work with my Dana 44.

Should I push back on the Jeep shop and tell them to give me the 4.10s?
Will a 4.56 ratio run my engine too hard at 75mph? (over 3100rpm)?
Is there a middle ground for me here or do I bite the bullet and sell my new tires and go back to the 31s" I loved?
