Thinking about buying an '05 3.7L. Found it on a local lot that deals mostly with local trades. They sell fast and dirty, which is kind of nice as they're not even taking the time to cover things up.
I don't have experience with the 3.7, but have been living with a 4.7 for last 13 years. It's my understanding that they're pretty much the same engine with 2 fewer cylinders. It looks and sounds pretty good, possibly a slight leak in the PS pump. Oil looks clear, no idea when it was changed. Coolant looks good as well. It drives very nice, engine sounds great.
The only problem I was able to readily identify, was when I tried out the 4wd. In both Hi and Lo, there is a shockingly loud thunking sound that is definitely not good, but I do not know what it is. My WJ has more than 2x more miles on it, and the transfer case has NEVER done anything like it.
A google search isn't turning up much, but then again, I'm not sure if it's a pop, clunk, klunk, thump, or whatever. The only reference I've seen that sounds reasonable, is that the drive shaft is bound up or the CV joint(s) is(are) bad. With no experience in a part-time 4wd system, I'm just not sure what I'm looking for.
Thoughts?
