So I tried swapping my steering gear box today and ran into problems when bad threads on the high port on the new gear box messed up the threads on my high pressure brass fitting. The fitting screwed in fine about 80% of the way and then got very tight very quickly. I could see it wasn't all the way in because I could see about three shiny threads left before they got darker which would indicate the fitting being all the way in. I knew I hadn't cross threaded the fitting because I was able to hand screw it most of the way so I kept tightening it until I felt the threads skipper and it got much easier to tighten. I immediately backed it all the way out which may have been a mistake because now the fitting won't screw in at all and I can see the threads on the fitting were marred.
What are my options on how to fix this problem? All I know to do is try going back to the auto parts store with my old steering gear to find a tap and die set to fit the threads. If that doesn't work what else is there to do?
I saw on the high pressure line about 6 inches up the metal line connects to a rubber hose. Can the high pressure line be disconnected there? If so can I just buy the last 6 inches of the line with a new fitting? I wouldn't think a high pressure line would be made to be disconnected in the middle but that is what it looks like.
Also should I try fixing the threads on the new steering gear or should I juse return it for a new one? It was extremely difficult to get the coupler on the steering colum to fit on the new steering gear. It was way too tight of a fit and basically had to be hammered on.
This isn't my first steering gear box replacement on a jeep but for some reason this time has just been plagued by problems from the start. Thanks for your help. Any advice on what I should do would be great. I'm trying to sell this jeep and have literally 30-40 people call me everyday wanting to come look at it and until this is fixed they can't. I orignally tried selling it without replacing the steering gear box but it seems nobody wants to buy a jeep that isn't turn-key so to speak.
