I think i'm just about ready to trade my pickup in for a jeep.
first had the experience of driving a truly fun jeep was in a soft top TJ when i was stationed in Hawaii a few years back. Borrowed a friends dark blue TJ and as soon as i got around the corner, i fought the many odds and ends of the soft top down and folded up into (what i perceived as "good enough") into the back and hit the road. And i distinctly remember saying to myself, "i can see how people fall in love with this sort of thing!"
so here i am three years later, now with a 9 month old son, and my family and i are getting ready to go back to Hawaii for another few years for work. Ideally, i wanted an older CJ7 or CJ5, but after a few weeks of poking around and doing some research, i believe the right jeep for me is a "LJ."
It doesnt have to be a Rubi (mostly because those are pretty well out of my price range) but it sure would be nice. I dont truly care for what condition the soft top (yea, i want a soft top too) is in, because it would only need to be in place for shipping purposes, and once on the island again the top would be replaced with a bikini top and probably go doorless. :cheers2:
i've talked to a few of my friends who have had TJ's in the past and im just trying to get a feel for things to be looking out for when "shopping." and heres my list thus far:
1. rear main seal on the 4.0 replaced (or replace it)
2. check for rust in the tub and the fenders (seems obvious)
3. has it been wheeled a LOT in its life
no preferrence on the transmission as my wife wants an auto and i feel that would be easier for wheeling too, but from i understand all unlimiteds had the 4.0 which is what i want, had a 2001 XJ a while back with the 4.0 and loved it.
so does anyone have anything they can think of to add to my list of "what to look for in a jeep" or maybe suggestions on how to act/dress/talk like a (potential) jeep owner?
