(sorry in advance for the overly long-winded post, but I've been fighting this one for months. Lots of searching this site, and others, have turned up zilch on my exact issue so I'm laying everything out there that I've done to date)
Ok, our '95 ZJ had the typical 46RH with a failed internal seal that would cause it to not shift into 3rd gear until I let off the gas or it hit 4,000+ RPM. It was this way when we bought it. I changed the filter & fluid, and also adjusted the bands and TV cable, all to no avail. Some slight improvements were gained but they didn't fix the main issue.
I pulled it out and took it to my transmission guy. He went through it and said it didn't need to be rebuilt, it just needed the new seal, but he said he went through it, replaced some snap ring and made sure everything was ok internally before buttoning it back up. He got me a remanned torque converter so I installed that when I put the tranny back in. After I put it back in, everything seemed good at first, but now when it gets hot it acts like it's slipping out of gear at times. It only does it when it's up to temperature, and only at low-load, light throttle; at times it seems to do it when I am making a slight right turn, as if in a curve and under the same steady, light pedal pressure. Sometimes if I don't catch that it's doing it, it will begin to chatter as if it's slipping, then I can either let off the gas, or mash it harder and it will snap back into gear. Keep in mind I noticed this less than 100 miles after reinstallation.
So I took the Jeep back to him per his request so he could look at it and test drive it. He said he got it to do it with him, so he dropped the valve body and found some metal shavings. It didn't seem to alarm him that much because there were some very fine aluminum shavings in the pan when I took it to him originally, but he said the filter was clean this go round. He said he drilled some hole in the plate between the valve body and transmission housing (?) to a larger size per a TSB he'd read. He said it was supposed to help raise the pressure to the torque converter to help keep it locked.
He said he also swapped the TCC solenoid with a known good one to see if that helped. He says he feels like it's the torque converter unlocking for some reason; maybe some residual shavings from the transmission cooler found their way into it and have caused the issue, and while I do trust him (he's been my go-to transmission guy for years and is well respected in my area for tranny work), I would like to exhaust all other options before I go pulling this thing out again.
So what other options could I exhaust before resorting to pulling it out? The last thing I want to do is pull it out, then reinstall it, only to have the same issues again.
Would a failing OD solenoid cause the condition I'm describing?
Maybe an intermittent electrical issue?
Failing OD unit?
Failing fluid pump?
Thanks in advance for any and all help. this thing has been kicking my tail since the day we bought it......:o
