Jeep shutting off because of bass?

mardi 12 août 2014

I have a 91 Jeep cherokee that Ive converted to a newer motor/manual trans (not sure what year, somewhere between 93-97 I think) and lately it has been cutting off while Im driving. Before this, it would "jump" while accelerating.

The jumping usually happens up a hill, and it just feels like I blipped the gas really quick when I havent. Sometimes only once, sometimes several times.

Heres the odd thing. As far as the car cutting completely off.. best as I can remember, it has only happened when I have my music/bass turned all the way up. Mind you, this is a competition vehicle... 7 batteries, 2 high output alternators, 8 12s, 14000 watts, 157db+, about 1600lbs worth of stereo Im dragging around every day.... so not your normal stereo.

BUT, what on a jeep could be vibrated so badly by a stereo that it cuts off? I know the car is slowly but surely falling to pieces and damn near everything is flexing/moving/breaking to some degree but nothing should be making it cut off? Sometimes if I cut it back down it will "kick" back on so to speak. Meaning coasting in gear, I can feel the power come back to my foot. Only other thing it may be is that my alternators are putting such a strain on the motor that its similar to the going up a hill thing and making it cut off that way.

When it does cut off, Im just coasting in whatever gear I was in.. hitting the gas does nothing. Usually because of the music I cant even tell its off until I try to speed up or I notice Im slowing down.

I know the probable culprits.

-Distributor pickup/stator aka camshaft sensor

-Distributor cap

-Distributor rotor

-Crankshaft position sensor

-Bad grounds

-???

My grounds are good so thats ruled out. I have numerous engine + chassis grounds with 2/0 welding cable. Im leaning towards the cranks sensor (CPS/CKP) but usually that has something to do with heat, and mine doesnt seem to have that going on.. it still sounds an awful lot like it.

I found another thread with a similar issue and it was his ignition coil. I swapped mine with a known buddies tonight and it didnt jump in the 15 minute test drive, but it did entirely cut off. Went to crank it back up, and it backfired, then cranked and cranked and finally came back to life after me stabbing the gas pedal over and over... so its not the ignition coil.

Can an ignition switch on our year cherokee XJ's cause this? Mine works but the key pulls out of it. It also is a little funky clicking into the Acc position.. doesnt want to stay there.

HELP?
