brake light/turn signal not working.

I've been battling a brake light going out for years and now have unreliable turn signals. I'll go through the process of cleaning all contacts, etc, but I have a question before I start. A few months ago I replaced the steering column in my jeep (1995) with one I believe is a few years older. Maybe an 80's one. I have no idea. Could there be a small wiring difference in the column that is causing this?
