So I am in the middle of refurbishing a Dana 30 axle. I bought it used and it has recently had a rebuild with gears. My original plan was to just do a TJ shaft swap/CAD delete and replace the ball joints/U-joints in the process. So the first thing I noticed when popping the diff cover were the carrier shims. They were outboard and appeared fudged up.

There was also some play in the pinion gear so I pulled that and there was no oil slinger under the gear, just the pinion depth shims (between the gear and the bearings). They're somewhat chewed up as well. There was also 0 preload on the pinion.

I planing on replacing the pinion bearings, races and shims. Gonna make sure I have both slingers and the dust shield. Also gonna put the depth shims between the inner race and the housing.

On to my question:

Should I go ahead and replace the carrier bearings as well? If so, should I shim the carrier between the carrier and the bearings or between the bearings and the housing? The carrier bearings seem to be in great shape, so I'm wondering if it's worth all the trouble...

Thoughts? Insights? Recommendations?
