Just finished a ZJ ..lots of parts - Limited Test Drives

mardi 6 janvier 2015

So I got a deal.. sort of on a ZJ that was driven hard by a teen. The previous owner did a spring swap and 2" spacers and threw wide 35's on it - It had the tires all up in the wheel wells, fender damage (no trim), has been yanked by every hole that you shouldn't yank from when mudded, had death wobble (take you off the street kind at 30 mph), misfired, CEL, etc.,.

BUT - All the options work, the interior was near perfect, no wrecks, no smoke, shifts, and 4WD worked - So I bought it.

Figured out a bunch of stuff -

Ball joints, and all rod ends blown - Replaced

Bad running and CEL - Apparently had a bad front 02 sensor, kid rigged the rear o2 up there and left the rear empty. Put the rear back in the rear, got a new front - Bam - Runs perfect.

The control arms were rusted out and bushings rotted out - Replaced

Then I lifted it, no kit

I am not rich enough to go all out at any given time, so I spent 6 months piecing this thing together - trying to do the right thing. Changes:

  • 4.5" Ridge Rubicon Springs

  • BDS Adjustable Front Track Bar

  • PMT Front Lower Control Arms - Fixed size (were 1" longer then stocks)

  • PMT Rear Lower Control Arms - Fixed size (same as stock)

  • Front Adjustable Uppers from Fabricator

  • Rear Adjustable Uppers - Rusty's

  • Extended Brake Lines, New Rotors, Calipers

  • Extended Sway Bar End Links, Disconnect type

  • Rear Pinion Cam Lock kit

  • Zone Shocks Matched for Lift (couldnt afford better, but on the future to do list)

  • Rear Track Bar relocation kit for 4" lift (Better than nothing?)

  • New Steering Stabilizer (old one blown out)

  • Rugged Ridge HD Tie Rod/Drag Link Kit

  • Traded out the rusty steel rims and tore up 35's with my aluminum Pro Comp rims and 31's from my old ZJ (2wd, 2" spacer lift, small fender trim on the ZJ)

So, this was all done over time in my drive way - I have never lifted a 4wd before. I basically zeroed out my front toe with a tape measure, and eye balled the front and rear adjustable control arms to straighten out the shafts (as they were rolling under). My plan is to take it to this shop that does Jeeps around here to get all the angles done right. This plan was just blown out do to finances and circumstances. I need to use this as a DD starting next week for low speed around town trips, kids to school and back, but my next payday is for two weeks from now (cant do the shop until then).

The tag was just done yesterday, it hit the road for the first time since purchase to the gas station ..1/2 mile. I initially got a vibration from the shaft at first accel, but it never happened again. I also never went over 35mph. When I came out of the station I accelerated on a left slight uphill, got a loud clunk in the rear. My tail pipe is loose from the muffler.. so I am hoping that is it (new muffler will be here tomorrow, the rear is rotted out and the pipe is just stuffed in there). BUT - Zero wobble, very unlike the first drive home - so that is good. Oddly enough also drives with a straight wheel (guess the measuring tape worked).

I am for some reason scared of some catastrophe occurring however, I need to hit 45mph to get the kids to school, but at the same time I am too broke for a tow.. lol. I have yet to get it up to speed and test, though I was going to try on my street, but with the muffler issue the Jeep is loud, I accelerated from 20-30 and some old lady yelled at me to slow down.. lol.

Anyway.. whats the worst here (assuming everything is tight)? Maybe I should just borrow a car until I can get to the shop? (I hate asking that of family, have done it plenty recently).

Heres a pic
