Chronic problem w/ Limp Mode at highway speed (Misfire)

mardi 4 août 2015

Just joined looking for an answer and posted this in response to another thread. Seems more appropriate in this part of the forum.

Not looking for troubleshooting at this point. That's been done by many knowledgeable people. Looking to hear who, if anyone, has licked the problem because there have been others that experienced the same.

I have been fighting this problem for a year, at great expense and tremendous agony. My 2004 Grand Cherokee with the 4.0 engine has a blinking indicator light after sustained highway speed (75 mph) and then a very rough ride and loss of power that I'm told is called "limp mode" as some kind of shutdown protector. Remedy is to pull off the road and restart, which works until it happens again. Code is almost always P0300.

Three mechanics have worked on this over two dozen times in the past year: national tire chain, Chrysler dealership, and independent garage with proprietor that has 30 years experience and a degree in electrical engineering.

What's been done? (partial list as I'm sure I'll leave some things out):

* Coil x4
* Plugs x3
* Camshaft position sensor
* Crankshaft position sensor
* Gas Cap
* Power Train Control Module
* Engine rebuilt by machine shop to fix intake/exhaust valves
* Fuel Pump
* Fuel Filter
* sleeves to cover Fuel Injectors per relevant Technical Service Bulletin
* Replace Fuel Injectors 3 & 4 (blanketed and hooked up to diagnostic equipment, these cyls are the culprits)
* Thermostat x3
* Engine Coolant w/ additive

You get the point. I stopped tracking because it bothers me so much, but $6-7,000 has been spent on virtually everything without solving the problem. Some biggies were the PTCM and sending engine to machine shop...that was close to $4,000 combined. I am on verge of tears when I think about this, so I try not too.

178,000 miles, EXCELLENT condition interior and exterior, and (as you can tell) a lot of the inner workings are BRAND NEW, even if only by accident in the quest to fix this cursed vehicle.

My question:

It is very easy to find countless people that have had the same problem on this site and others across the internet. DO ANY PEOPLE HAVE CONCRETE SUCCESS where they battled this like I have for a long time and then got it totally fixed? And no how they did it?

What I don't see is closure to these many discussions where people come back to report 3/6/12 months and 20/35/50,000 miles of no problems. I'm afraid people just give up and this is unfixable.

Recommendation from my friend that has worked on this is to now replace the motor. I have no problem at all with him because he's spent dozens of hours at additional cost because he feels an obligation to get this right, and he's the 3rd one to handle. Just don't want to replace the engine if it isn't going to fix. You can see what a waste it was for PTCM (about $2000) and sending to machine shop (a little under $2,000) when that wasn't really my problem.

It would have been far cheaper if recommendations initially had been to NOT fix it. If that's the reality of this, others should know too. Thanks!
