Is anyone else out there extremely annoyed with the dealer add-ons Jeep dealers keep coming up with? We've been shopping for a Grand Cherokee. There are several Jeep dealers in the Phoenix metro area and here are the ridiculous add-ons we've encountered:
- Clear-coat protection. This tends to come under various names and appears to be an overpriced wax job. Tends to be expensive, $400 to $800 add on.
- 'Manufacturer recommended' prepaid maintenance program. Seen this for about $600. Vague as to what is even included, appears to be only oil changes.
- Pin-striping. Umm...seriously?
- Window tint. Ranges from $299 to $499. Interesting considering the Jeep website says they include factory tinting. I ask what they tinted exactly and I never get a good response.
- 'lifetime' fabric protection. Again, unnecessary and vague.
- Spoiler. To improve mpg. (Funny since the spoiler on the liftgate is installed at the factory)
- Nitrogen filled tires. $1.50 per tire. Yes, they want to fight me over $6 add-on.
- And my all-time favorite: upgraded alarm system. There is one dealer here in Phoenix that goes so far as to cut into the wiring harness and splice in their own 'add on' alarm system that somehow overrides/ works with the factory system. They said that they do this to every car they sell and they claim it is mandatory for security. This is about a $900 add on. Ridiculous. I said I refused to accept this, they said 'what can we do to earn your business'. I said, go back in time and uninstall your gimmicky alarm system.
What gets me is how aggressive some of these dealers are in enforcing these add-ons, and they look at me like I am nuts when I question them. It's comical. But also a real pain in the butt as a potential buyer.
