front of engine coolant leak...but weep hole looks dry

lundi 10 août 2015

So my 2001 TJ 4.0 sprung a big leak. a little back story. some time ago my radiator started with the slow leak at the seams. bought a new radiator but have yet to install. I would just add water from time to time. it may have run low a couple of times but this last weekend the puddle under the jeep got bigger so I added more water/coolant. this time it required a gallon and it started to leak pretty steady from the from the front of the oil pan. this was new so like a good boy i did my research. ok, sounds like the water pump went bad and the weep hole is spewing green liquid. I pulled the radiator and fan for a closer inspection. to my dismay the week hole looks completely dry. Now im thinking head gasket but i dont see and oil in coolant and the oil is the usual coal black. when the major leak started, i popped the hood and steam with a strong coolant smell was emanating from middle of valve cover area on the intake side. when i started it today it did seem to idle rough but then smoothed out after a minute. i guess my question is would the water pump leak anywhere besides the weep hole streaming coolant down the front of the engine and cause the steam from the head/valve cover area?
